49ers' GM confident Crabtree will sign
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, 49ers' GM Scot McCloughan is confident that the team will get first-round pick Michael Crabtree signed before the season begins. "It'll get done," McCloughan told the paper. "What's three or four months on a five- or six-year contract?"
Our View: The article points out that Crabtree has spent much of the summer in the Bay area instead of at his home in Texas, which would seem to indicate that he plans on signing. The Niners feel like Crabtree can still help the team this season if he does sign, but he won't nearly as much of an impact as he could have if he would have gotten into camp at a reasonable time.
49ers | Confident Crabtree will sign
John Crumpacker, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports the San Francisco 49ers remain optimistic that they will sign WR Michael Crabtree before the start of the regular season. "It'll get done," general manager Scot McCloughan said. "What's three or four months on a five- or six-year contract?" The thinking is that if Crabtree signs before Week 1, he would be able to contribute as a rookie, although not as much as he would have had he been in training camp from the start.
49ers hope to sign Crabtree soon
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports the 49ers remain confident they will sign rookie WR Michael Crabtree soon. The paper reports the 49ers might be able to sign the Texas Tech WR before the regular season begins. "It'll get done," GM Scot McCloughan said Saturday. "What's three or four months on a five- or six-year contract?" The thinking is that if Crabtree signs before the Sept. 13 opener at Arizona, he would be able to contribute as a rookie, although not as much as he would have had he been in training camp from the start. Crabtree still serious about sitting out '09
Michael Crabtree is "serious" about sitting out the entire 2009 season and re-entering the NFL draft if he does not receive the contract he wants from the 49ers, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Our View: Crabtree and team are reportedly still quibbling over $7 million in guaranteed money. It's just a hunch, but it probably stands to reason that he will lose a lot more than that if he sits out 2009 and re-enters the draft as opposed to signing the 49ers offer.

49ers, Crabtree still millions apart
News: From The Sports Xchange: Rookie WR Michael Crabtree's absence from San Francisco 49ers training camp has stretched into its fifth week with no end in sight. Even if Crabtree signs in the near future, the contract impasse is likely to have a major impact on the first NFL season of a player most expected to be an immediate starter. The 49ers and Crabtree are an estimated $7 million apart in guaranteed money with a likely $18 million gap in total package. [...]

Niners still expect to sign Crabtree
News: The 49ers still expect to sign top draft pick Michael Crabtree. Team president Jed York acknowledged that the deadline passed Friday for the franchise to trade the unsigned holdout receiver, the 10th overall draft pick who wants money comparable to the higher picks. Oakland Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, the No. 7 pick, signed a five-year contract late last month that will guarantee him at least $23.5 million. On Friday, Jacksonville Jaguars top pick Eugene Monroe - taken eighth overall - signed a five-year, $25 million contract that includes $19 million guaranteed. [...]

They’re Gone: BJ Raji and Michael Crabtree
NFL Holdouts: Michael Crabtree’s agent is a doofus. “Eugene Parker wants seventh-pick money and it’s not going to happen … The 49ers are not going to cave in … It would have catastrophic effects for their futures in the league.” Crabtree’s gone home and isn’t expected to sign until the final week of the preseason.

Raye: Crabtree is missing valuable time
News: 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said Wednesday rookie WR Michael Crabtree is missing valuable time with his contract holdout. "Obviously, he's missing an opportunity to join his teammates [to] bond and learn what we are doing and help us going into a championship season, if in fact he is the player that we think he is," Raye said. "If and when he does become a part of it we'll have to accelerate the process to try to get him familiar with the quarterback and the system. It's a detriment at this point but like I said earlier, we'll embrace him when he comes." According to a report in the San Jose Mercury News, Crabtree's holdout could last until September, and he might not sign until around the first game Sept. 13. [...]

Crabtree has missed 20 practices
Michael Crabtree has now missed 20 practices while holding out, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Crabtree and the 49ers remain far apart on contract negotiations.
Our View: Unless Crabtree has a change of heart soon, he will miss too much time to be considered a legit fantasy option this season. Each day the holdout continues, his fantasy value drops a little more, and so do his chances of making any kind of impact on the team this season. You should adjust your draft boards accordingly.

Mike Singletary is sticking to the company line: San Francisco's coach remains focused on the players who are in camp for the 49ers and isn't busy worrying when Crabtree will finally show up for his first practice.
Impacts: With one week of training camp already complete, each day the standout receiver misses puts him further behind learning a new offense and becoming familiar with his teammates.

49ers pick up Francies
The Sacramento Bee reports that the 49ers have signed Chris Francies.
Our View: Francies is a journeyman added mostly as Michael Crabtree insurance. If he makes the team, he won't catch many balls.
49ers forge ahead without Crabtree
News: Mike Singletary is sticking to the company line: San Francisco's coach remains focused on the players who are in camp for the 49ers and isn't busy worrying when top draft pick Michael Crabtree will end his holdout and finally show up for practice. With one week of training camp already complete, each day the standout receiver from Texas Tech misses puts him further behind in learning a new offense and becoming familiar with his teammates. "In terms of Crabtree, when he comes in, he comes in," Singletary said Friday. "Would you love to have him in? Absolutely. You'd love to have him. Do we want him here? Yes, we want to have him in. But until that happens, I just can't sit back and think about the what-ifs. All I can do is concentrate on what is, and control that." The Niners' receiving corps took another hit to its depth chart with the loss of Brandon Jones for eight weeks because of a small fracture in his right shoulder. Jones, who underwent X-rays on Friday, was injured during Thursday's late practice trying to make a diving catch while all alone in the end zone during 7-on-7 work. [...]

Reports of Crabtree reentering draft deemed false
According to NFL Fanhouse, Michael Crabtree's agent, Eugene Parker, has denied any reports that the tenth overall pick has threatened to sit out next season and reenter the draft.
Our View: This directly contradicts an earlier report where Crabtree's cousin/adviser, David Wells, confirmed the receiver's willingness to sit out this year. The 49ers have stepped up as well and claim to "have no idea" what Wells is referring to. Looks like this was a shady plan to try and squeeze out more money. Now they are back to square one and Crabtree still isn't in training camp. What a waste.

Report: Crabtree might sit out season
News: ESPN is among those reporting that representatives for WR Michael Crabtree are telling the 49ers that their client is prepared to sit out the 2009 season and be re-drafted next April if the team doesn't meet his contractual demands. Crabtree, picked 10th overall, is allegedly seeking a higher contract than Raiders rookie WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, who was picked seventh overall. "We are prepared to do it," adviser David Wells said. "Michael just wants fair-market value. They took him with the 10th pick and you have Darrius Heyward-Bey getting $38 million? This week is crucial. Michael was one of the best players in the draft and he just wants to be paid like one of the best players. This week is very crucial." [...]

Crabtree threatened to reenter draft
According to Pro Football Talk, negotiations between the 49ers and Michael Crabtree have been so fruitless that the first-round pick has threatened to sit out the entire season and reenter the draft in 2010.
Our View: Crabtree wants to be paid like a top three-to-five pick and apparently his agent hasn't even made an offer to the Niners yet. It doesn't sound like either side is even remotely close on this deal. No one even knows what Crabtree wants yet and he's threatening to sit out. It would be extremely unfortunate if he were to miss the season over this.

49ers | Still far apart in talks with Crabtree
Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers remain far apart in the general philosophy of what first-round draft choice WR Michael Crabtree should receive. The team could choose to stray from the slotting procedure, but it could spell long-term consequences for the organization and upset the system for the rest of the league.
Crabtree remains unsigned
Michael Crabtree remains unsigned and no progress has been made in negotiations, according to ProFootballTalk.com.
Our View: Speculation that a deal had been done proved to be false. 49ers' coach Mike Singletary noted that he will be excited when the prized rookie is signed and in camp, but is just focusing on his current group of receivers for the time being.

News: Michael Crabtree is a no-show at San Francisco 49ers training camp. The Niners kicked off their first camp under coach Mike Singletary on Saturday without their top draft pick, the star receiver from Texas Tech. Crabtree was a no-show at San Francisco 49ers training camp as the team began its first camp under coach Mike Singletary on Saturday without the top draft pick, the former star receiver from Texas Tech. The team said Crabtree had yet to sign before players took the field for their opening workout. Crabtree also missed the 49ers' offseason minicamps while recovering from a foot injury.
Impacts: Singletary said earlier in the week he wouldn't be surprised if Crabtree hadn't agreed to a contract by the first day. The rest of the rookies reported to the training complex Tuesday. The record-setting receiver was the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft after he unexpectedly slipped several spots on draft day. He's listed and wearing No. 15 on the roster being handed out on a day when practice was open to the public.
Crabtree unsigned, not at practice
Wide receiver Michael Crabtree hasn't signed a deal and is not present as the 49ers opened camp on Saturday, the AP reports.
Our View: Crabtree is not helping his fantasy cause. He missed much of the summer while recovering from a foot injury and is now missing valuable camp time. We love the rookie's skills, but it's tough to win a starting job and learn an offense when you aren't on the field.
