According to the San Francisco Chronicle, 49ers' GM Scot McCloughan is confident that the team will get first-round pick Michael Crabtree signed before the season begins. "It'll get done," McCloughan told the paper. "What's three or four months on a five- or six-year contract?"
Our View: The article points out that Crabtree has spent much of the summer in the Bay area instead of at his home in Texas, which would seem to indicate that he plans on signing. The Niners feel like Crabtree can still help the team this season if he does sign, but he won't nearly as much of an impact as he could have if he would have gotten into camp at a reasonable time.

Our View: Crabtree and team are reportedly still quibbling over $7 million in guaranteed money. It's just a hunch, but it probably stands to reason that he will lose a lot more than that if he sits out 2009 and re-enters the draft as opposed to signing the 49ers offer.

Our View: This directly contradicts an earlier report where Crabtree's cousin/adviser, David Wells, confirmed the receiver's willingness to sit out this year. Our View: Crabtree wants to be paid like a top three-to-five pick and apparently his agent hasn't even made an offer to the Niners yet. It doesn't sound like either side is even remotely close on this deal. No one even knows what Crabtree wants yet and he's threatening to sit out. It would be extremely unfortunate if he were to miss the season over this.
