Stafford's Knee Requiring Surgery?
He Doesn't Think So
Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford said Monday that no one is telling him his season is in jeopardy, despite a report that the team is worried he might need knee surgery. Stafford suffered a right knee injury -- reportedly a partially dislocated kneecap -- Oct. 4 at Chicago. He has missed the past two games. He went through a limited practice Wednesday. He said afterward that the main concern was swelling and whether he would be able to practice again the next day, and he did not practice the next day. ESPN reported Sunday that Stafford had swelling and the Lions ordered a new MRI, which they forwarded to Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala., fearing Stafford might need surgery. General manager Martin Mayhew dismissed that as "gossip," and Stafford said he was not worried about surgery. (The Detroit Free Press)
FF Today's Take: This is bad news fantasy owners. The fact that the dislocation has the potential to require surgery suggests that there's been a fair amount of damage to the knee. Until Stafford starts fully participating in practice, find another option.

Stafford back at practice
News: Lions QB Matthew Stafford was back at practice on Wednesday and splitting reps with Daunte Culpepper in the first-team offense. He had missed the team's Week 5 game vs. Pittsburgh with an injury involving his kneecap, believed to be a dislocation. He threw and jogged lightly throughout the practice. Head coach Jim Schwartz would not commit to Stafford starting against the Packers in Week 6. "I think the decision is how well he can move when it comes to Sunday and the ability to do some work during the week," Schwartz told the Detroit Free Press. "Last week, we had a situation where he wasn't doing anything during the week and would have been limited on Sunday, so therefore it was an easy decision. I don't want to speculate on what may happen this week, but you could have two different scenarios. You could have a scenario where he doesn't get any work and then Sunday he can move around great and he's fine. You have another scenario where maybe he gets work this week and is a little bit limited. I don't think it necessarily has to be 100 percent, but he has to be able to move, has to be able to escape trouble and be able to protect himself." [...]

Detroit's injury report listed Stafford as one of its players who did not practice Thursday because of a knee injury. Stafford had his right knee twisted on a sack in Sunday's loss at Chicago. Stafford, the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, said he did get good news from tests because there was no structural damage and surgery wasn't deemed necessary. The Lions, though, hadn't cleared him to run four days after he was injured. "They're just trying to get the swelling out," Stafford said.
