Late Sunday afternoon, Detroit coach Jim Schwartz and his rookie quarterback, Matthew Stafford, found themselves alone on an elevator leaving Ford Field after the Lions' 19-14 win over Washington. There were many things Schwartz could have said -- how great it was to break a 19-game Lions losing streak, how cool it was for a downtrodden city, how proud he was for both them on their first NFL victory. News: Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford closed the preseason much like he opened it: by showing plenty of promise but little finish. The same goes for the Buffalo Bills offense, which could certainly use a healthy Terrell Owens to help it find the end zone following a 17-6 loss to Detroit in each team's preseason finale Thursday night. Then there was Stafford, the No. 1 draft pick out of Georgia, who was making his second start this preseason and finished 5 of 9 for 81 yards with two drive-killing turnovers -- a fumble and interception. Stafford got off to a sharp start, hitting Calvin Johnson for 37- and 19-yard completions on the opening drive. He also hit Johnson on the fly in the end zone for what would have been a 34-yard touchdown, but the play was nullified by offsetting penalties. And that's when the trouble began. Three plays later, Stafford lost a fumble after being stripped by defensive end Aaron Maybin, the rookie first-round draft pick appearing in his second game. The next drive ended when Stafford was intercepted by cornerback Reggie Corner. [...]

Our View: Stafford needed a good performance to win the starting job tonight, and he wasn't bad in his limited time. The interception isn't great, but he finished with nine yards per attempt, which is solid. He didn't come out and make the decision for the coaching staff, but me might have been just good enough to get the nod. We will keep you updated.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Matthew Stafford is "iffy" for Thursday's game against the Packers. X-rays revealed no fracture to Stafford's collarbone, which the team initially feared, but he reentered Sunday's game against the advice of doctors. Stafford will undergo an MRI on Monday, though the secretive Lions won't tell anyone the results. They'll call him a "game-day decision" for Week 12.
