Video: Stafford, Schwartz on winning
Jim Schwartz and Matthew Stafford discuss what it means to get a victory.
Hope abounds for Stafford, Lions; mailbag
Late Sunday afternoon, Detroit coach Jim Schwartz and his rookie quarterback, Matthew Stafford, found themselves alone on an elevator leaving Ford Field after the Lions' 19-14 win over Washington. There were many things Schwartz could have said -- how great it was to break a 19-game Lions losing streak, how cool it was for a downtrodden city, how proud he was for both them on their first NFL victory. But this is what Schwartz chose to say:
Stafford threw for 241 yards and a touchdown in Detroit's first

Stafford wins in third NFL start
Matthew Stafford completed 21-of-36 passes for 241 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers in the Week 3 win over Washington.
Our View: The Lions snapped a 19-game losing streak dating back to last season, and Stafford notched his first victory as a pro. The rookie also showed a lot of toughness on a 21-yard scamper in the second quarter. We consider Stafford a good buy-low candidate in dynasty leagues, as he has been thrown to the wolves with a very tough first half schedule.

Lions | Still feel Stafford gives them the best chance to win
Tim Twentyman, of The Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions rookie QB Matthew Stafford is on pace to throw 40 interceptions compared to just eight touchdowns this season. However, head coach Jim Schwartz continues to stand behind his rookie quarterback. "I have a lot of confidence in Matt's ability, not only as a player but his ability to lead this team, and his ability to help us win," Schwartz said. "We can't answer how he'll be better off in Week 6 from where he is right now. He needs experience. With experience he'll become better and better."
Lions | Sticking with Stafford
Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said Monday, Sept. 21, he stands by his decision to start QB Matthew Stafford immediately despite struggling thus far. "He's our quarterback," Schwartz said. "We're pleased with him. He's going to be a very good quarterback in this league, and we're going to win with him."
Lions sticking with Stafford
News: The Detroit Lions knew they would have to live with mistakes when they decided to start rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford. Well, they're living with them. Stafford has thrown five interceptions - tying Carolina's Jake Delhomme for the most in the league - and only one touchdown in two games for the winless Lions. The Lions decided to let the No. 1 pick in the draft learn on the field, instead of putting him on the sideline to watch veteran Daunte Culpepper play in his 11th season. It hasn't worked out so far, but coach Jim Schwartz insists he's happy with Stafford. "He's our quarterback," Schwartz said Monday. "We're pleased with him. He's going to be a very good quarterback in this league and we're going to win with him." [...]

Stafford's first start had its ups and downs in Detroits' 45-27 loss to the Saints.
Impacts: The 2009 top overall draft choice was 16 of 37 for 205 yards with three interceptions, two by safety Darren Sharper, the other by linebacker Scott Shanle. "It was tough. Playing from behind is never easy," Stafford said. "Some of those balls I was throwing, I was just trying to get rid of it and not take a sack. ... I'm fine. I've thrown three picks in a game before. Obviously, I don't like to lose. I wish I could play better, but I've got to learn from it."

Lions | Stafford turns ball over twice Thursday
The Associated Press reports Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford was 5-for-9 for 81 yards passing during the team’s preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3, but he lost a fumble and threw an interception in the game. Despite committing two turnoverx, Stafford feels he is ready for the starting job. “I feel extremely confident. We moved the ball really well.”
Stafford weakens case to start
News: Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford closed the preseason much like he opened it: by showing plenty of promise but little finish. The same goes for the Buffalo Bills offense, which could certainly use a healthy Terrell Owens to help it find the end zone following a 17-6 loss to Detroit in each team's preseason finale Thursday night. Then there was Stafford, the No. 1 draft pick out of Georgia, who was making his second start this preseason and finished 5 of 9 for 81 yards with two drive-killing turnovers -- a fumble and interception. Stafford got off to a sharp start, hitting Calvin Johnson for 37- and 19-yard completions on the opening drive. He also hit Johnson on the fly in the end zone for what would have been a 34-yard touchdown, but the play was nullified by offsetting penalties. And that's when the trouble began. Three plays later, Stafford lost a fumble after being stripped by defensive end Aaron Maybin, the rookie first-round draft pick appearing in his second game. The next drive ended when Stafford was intercepted by cornerback Reggie Corner. [...]

Stafford throws for 81 yards in limited time
Matthew Stafford finished Thursday's final preseason game 5-for-9 for 81 yards and an interception. Stafford was sacked twice, before being replaced by Brooks Bollinger at quarterback.
Our View: Stafford needed a good performance to win the starting job tonight, and he wasn't bad in his limited time. The interception isn't great, but he finished with nine yards per attempt, which is solid. He didn't come out and make the decision for the coaching staff, but me might have been just good enough to get the nod. We will keep you updated.

Status: Out. Unsure of return
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Matthew Stafford is "iffy" for Thursday's game against the Packers. X-rays revealed no fracture to Stafford's collarbone, which the team initially feared, but he reentered Sunday's game against the advice of doctors. Stafford will undergo an MRI on Monday, though the secretive Lions won't tell anyone the results. They'll call him a "game-day decision" for Week 12.
