Jets Sanchez tears it up against Jints
Mark Sanchez' summer-long love-in continues. But this time, the bouquets aren't being lobbed by fawning Jets head coach Rex Ryan or a New York media contingent desirous of seeing the rookie get the job because it's a sexier story than covering Kellen Clemens. This...
Clemens loses out to Mark Sanchez
News: Mark Sanchez was officially selected as the team's starting quarterback by coach Rex Ryan on Wednesday, making him the first rookie to open a season under center for the Jets. The fifth overall draft pick out of Southern California beat out Kellen Clemens for the starting job. "I feel the best move for our franchise is to go with Mark Sanchez as our quarterback," Ryan said, adding that it was solely his decision. [...]
Sanchez Chosen Jets' Starting QB
Beats Out Clemens
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)-Rookie Mark Sanchez was named the New York Jets' starting quarterback Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the decision.Sanchez, the fifth overall draft pick out of Southern California, beat out veteran Kellen Clemens with a solid training camp and will be under center for the Jets' season opener at Houston on Sept. 13. The person requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the decision. (AP)
FF Today's Take: The Jets wanted this day to come since they traded up in the draft to select Sanchez. He does not have the best supporting cast of receivers and HC Rex Ryan will likely bring him along slowly. Sanchez does not have as much experience as most rookie quarterbacks so it is unlikely he will be able to consistenly produce steady numbers making him a backup fantasy quarterback entering 2009.

Sanchez named Jets' starter
According to the Twitter page of ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jets have named Mark Sanchez as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. The team was informed of the decision when they arrived at the facility on Wednesday morning.
Our View: We can't say we are surprised, as Sanchez has been thought to be the favorite since camp opened. Kellen Clemens would have had to significantly outplay the rookie to get the nod, and he just didn't do that. Sanchez has been decent in the preseason, but the Jets figure to be a run-first offense this season. Sanchez should only be targeted as a backup fantasy quarterback in drafts, but that could change if he shows he can handle NFL defenses early in the season.

Clemens still fighting for QB job
News: Mark Sanchez scrambled behind the line of scrimmage, his eyes locked in on the end zone. The New York Jets rookie quarterback reared back, zipped a pass into Brad Smith's hands for a touchdown and celebrated as if he'd just won a game. Sanchez did it again on his next pass a few minutes later, capping another solid training camp practice Thursday. "The last play of the game, you've got to have it, win or lose," coach Rex Ryan said. "He had to scramble on both of them. Found an open guy, showed good vision downfield and then threaded the needle." Sanchez, competing with Kellen Clemens for the starting job, was having a good practice until kicking it up a notch with his last two tosses. He finished 7 for 14 in 11-on-11 drills, while Clemens was 4 for 7 with two interceptions on the day before the team wraps up camp at SUNY Cortland. "In all fairness to Kellen, he's been around here a long time and if I'm going to play, I need to earn it," Sanchez said. "That's the right thing to do. I thought that was the right thing for the organization to do. That's what I've done, just competing like crazy to give Coach a reason to put me on the field, and when I get my opportunities, try and make the most of it." [...]
Sanchez has good day of camp
Mark Sanchez performed well in training camp Wednesday, according to the New York Daily News. He completed 6-of-9 passes in 11-on-11 drills, and had one of his throws dropped by Wallace Wright.
Our View: Kellen Clemens also had a good day of camp, and neither pulled ahead. The pair continue to battle for the starting gig at quarterback.

Sanchez to start next preseason game
The Associated Press is reporting that the Jets will start rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez in their next preseason game against the Ravens on August 24. Sanchez outplayed veteran Kellen Clemens in the team's first preseason game.
Our View: This isn't a huge shocker since the team wants to see both quarterbacks with the frst team, but it is a bit telling that they announced it so soon after the previous game. Sanchez is impressing everyone, and it looks like he will be the starter come Week 1.
Clemens will be the backup quarterback for the Jets on Monday

Sanchz works as starter at practice
The New York Daily News is reporting that rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez started with the first team at Sutruday's practice. Sanchez took most of the reps in the team's 7-on-7 drills, and he was said to have been impressive.
Our View: It's starting to look like Sanchez has the startin job in the bag, but the team hasn't announced anything yet. Sanchez was impressive in the first preeason game, moreso than Kellen Clemens, but he will have his share of struggles if he doesn start for the team this season.
Sanchez already the starter?
The New York Posthas anointed Mark Sanchez as the Jets starting quarterback after throwing just four passes in the team's first preseason game on Friday night.
Our View: He did throw for 88 yards and a score, but c'mon. Sanchez is just as likely to struggle in his next preseason game as is he to excel, and veteran Kellen Clemens can by no means be ruled out yet.
Clemens completed all four of his pass attempts for a total
Clemens completed all four of his pass attempts for a total of 24 yards in Friday's preseason opener. He was also sacked once and lost a fumble in two series of work. [...]
Clemens doesn't miss in first game
News: In the Jets' Week 1 preseason game vs. the Rams, QB Kellen Clemens started, played two series and didn't miss on a single pass. He was 4-for-4, but for just 24 yards. He also fumbled the ball away once when he was sacked by DE Leonard Little. [...]
Ainge leads Jets in passing
Erik Ainge led the Jets in passing in tonight's 23-20 preseason loss to the Rams, as he completed 10-of-17 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Rookie Mark Sanchez completed 3-of-4 passes for 88 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Our View: It looks like Ainge is still in the race for the starting job at quarterback, even though Sanchez and Kellen Clemens are considered the top candidates. Ainge does not garner fantasy attention as of yet though.
Sanchez looks to have QB job nailed down
According to John Clayton of ESPN.com, Mark Sanchez will be the Jets starting quarterback this season.
Our View: He has apparently already built a sizable gap between himself and competitor Kellen Clemens. The decision isn't final, but Sanchez would have to drop off dramatically and Clemens would have to do some amazing things to get the job at this point. So it looks as if Sanchez will be the Jets QB to target in fantasy drafts. He should still be a last ditch or backup option for fantasy squads though.

Jets | Sanchez now working with first-string offense
Dave Hutchinson, of The Star-Ledger, reports New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer told QB Mark Sanchez he will begin alternating reps with QB Kellen Clemens with the first-string offense. Sanchez worked with the starters first during practice Saturday, Aug. 8. Sanchez hit 10 of 19 passes, with two touchdowns and one interception. His tempo with the offense was crisp and he got the team in and out of the huddle quickly. Clemens will work with the starters first in the afternoon workout. During the morning, he hit four of 12 passes and was intercepted once. He almost was picked off two other times. Head coach Rex Ryan said he feels Sanchez has taken a step forward in the last few practices. "He's confident. He's moving around and he's not moving around like a deer in head lights. He's poised. He can make all of the throws. He's taking a step forward," Ryan said of the team's first-round pick.

Clemens to start first preseason game
According to the official website, Jets' quarterback Kellen Clemens will start the team's first preseason games against the Rams. Clemens is still battling rookie Mark Sanchez for the starting job.
Our View: Both quarterbacks have been taking first team snaps, but Clemens gets the nod for the first preseason game of the season. We still expect Sanchez to be the opening day starter, but Clemens could still win the job if he outperforms Sanchez during the preseason games.

Jets | Sanchez outperforms Clemens in scrimmage
Dennis Waszak Jr., of The Associated Press reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez outperformed QB Kellen Clemens during the team’s scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 6, possibly giving a slight edge in the team’s quarterback competition. Head coach Rex Ryan said, “I wanted to see poise. I also wanted to see the accuracy that he showed. He really did show up.” Sanchez was 9-for-15, including four dropped passes, for 70 yards while running the first- and second-team offenses. Clemens was 5-for-7 for 26 yards.
Sanchez outplaying Clemens
The Boston Globe is reporting that Jets' rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez outplayed veteran Kellen Clemens during Thursday's 11-on-11 scrimmage. The article suggests that Sanchez may have the lead in the quarterback competition at this point.
Our View: Sanchez was 9-for-15 passing during the scrimmage for 70 yards, but he was also the victim of four dropped passes. If he is outplaying Clemens even a little bit, he should win the starting job when Week 1 comes around.
Sanchez fares better than Clemens
Mark Sanchez reportedly fared slightly better than Kellen Clemens during Wednesday's practice, according to the New York Daily News. He went 6-for-12 and had no turnovers while showing poise against the blitz.
Our View: The Jets are expected to name their starting quarterback following the third preseason game August 29. Sanchez has far more upside and potential than Clemens, but would not likely be consistent enough to trust as a starting fantasy quarterback in his first NFL campaign.

QB job still up for grabs
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Jets coach Rex Ryan stated that he would name the team's starting quarterback before the third preseason game.
Our View: The third preseason game falls on August 29th, so Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens have a little over three weeks to battle for the top spot. Sanchez had had more first team reps so far, making him the slight favorite at the moment.

Jets | Quarterback competition even
Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports the New York Jets' quarterback competition between QBs Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens is a virtual dead heat. Due to his edge in experience, Clemens should look better than Sanchez at this stage, but that hasn't happened.

In the main football-related showdown, Clemens outplayed Mark
In the main football-related showdown, Clemens outplayed Mark Sanchez until he was intercepted by Darelle Revis late in practice.
Impacts: In a competition that has been just about even through the first four days of camp, Clemens is going to need more than luck to win the starting job. He has thrown six interceptions during 11-on-11 drills in six practices. "I've put the entire competition in the coaches' hands,'' said Clemens, who has worked with the first-team offense for all but one practice session.
