ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting on his Twitter page that the Detroit Lions have signed free agent kicker Billy Cundiff. Cundiff will provide insurance for the currently injured Jason Hanson.

Our View: Schefter believes that the Lions must be pretty worried about Hanson's health to make a move like this, and we have to agree. It would be wise to stay away from Detroit kickers in your draft, because no one is reliable enough to own at this point.

Our View: There is belief that Hanson may not be ready for Week 1 at New Orleans, but Waters does not garner fantasy attention. When Hanson returns, he will merely be a backup option for fantasy leagues.

GM Martin Mayhew said, "I think the plan is to get him ready for the opener, but whenever he is ready, he is ready. If he is ready after the opener, that is great. If he is ready sooner, we will put him out there."

Our View: Hanson is not worthy of drafting as a No. 1 kicker when healthy, and should remain fine to target as a backup.

Longtime kicker Jason Hanson, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and the team's career leading scorer, underwent what coach Jim Schwartz called a "fairly minor" procedure to treat a nagging knee injury Tuesday morning. The coach wouldn't say which knee was affected, offering only that the team hopes to have the 18-year veteran back on the field soon. Hanson underwent a "minor" surgical procedure Tuesday to remedy a nagging knee injury. Lions coach Jim Schwartz would not say if the procedure was done on Hanson's kicking leg, but added the team hopes to get him back on the field quickly.

Impacts: Detroit also signed free-agent kicker Swayze Waters on Tuesday. Hanson, the franchise's career scoring leader and one of just six men in NFL history with more than 400 field goals, has been selected to two Pro Bowl teams during his 17-year career.
