Arizona, Carolina rematch of pivotal playoff game
The date was Jan. 10, 2009. Upstart Arizona stunned Carolina 33-13 in Charlotte, sending the Cardinals to the NFC championship game and Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme on a downward spiral that hasn't stopped.
Final Word: NFC South

ESPN.com's John Clayton expects coach Jon Fox to have a quick hook ready for Jake Delhomme this Sunday at Arizona. Since Delhomme's playoff debacle against the Cardinals, he has 21 turnovers in seven games. [...]
Battered by a barrage of interceptions and ugly losses, Delhomme
Battered by a barrage of interceptions and ugly losses, Delhomme resembles anything but a Super Bowl quarterback these days. But coach John Fox, perhaps holding onto old, fond memories or because he has no better option, is gambling the beleaguered 34-year-old can regain his form despite a stunning 21 turnovers in seven games.
Impacts: Delhomme's future, Fox's job and the Panthers' fortunes all depend on it. In Carolina, it's became Jake or Bust. "This is the same quarterback that a year ago led us to a 12-4 record and a couple years ago an NFC championship and a Super Bowl," RB DeAngelo Williams said. "Unfortunately, in this business you're only as good as your last game and we didn't play too well our last game. But my confidence has always been in Jake and will continue to stay in Jake."
Panthers | Will try not to work on Delhomme's mechanics as much
Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports Carolina Panthers quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer has agreed to pull back some of his technical suggestions to QB Jake Delhomme and let Delhomme play with the more spontaneous style he has used before, according to sources.

Delhomme Retains Starting Job
Despite League Lead in INTs
Panthers coach John Fox said Wednesday that embattled quarterback Jake Delhomme will start Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Delhomme leads the NFL with 13 interceptions, including three last week in a loss against the Buffalo Bills. (The Charlotte Observer)
FF Today's Take: Fox thinks his wily veteran gives the Panthers their best shot at winning now, but you've gotta figure Delhomme's nearing the backup brink with so many poor performances. If your league penalizes interceptions, you should be searching for virtually any option other than Delhomme at this point. Hey Matt Moore: start throwing.
Steve Smith not excited about Delhomme
According to the Twitter page of Panthers' beat writer Charles Chandler, wide receiver Steve Smith doesn't seem too enthused about Jake Delhomme being named the starter for next week. "I just work here. If Jake's the guy, Jake's the guy. It's not my call," Smith said after practice on Wednesday.
Our View: That's about as far from a ringing endorsement as you can get from you wide receiver. Smith is obviously frustrated with Delhomme, and his fantasy stock will continue to fall until Delhomme steps up or the Panthers make a change.

Delhomme to remain Panthers starting quarterback
Jake Delhomme will remain Carolina's starting quarterback despite an NFL-high 13 interceptions in six games.
Delhomme named Week 8 starter
Carolina Panthers' beat writer Darin Gantt is reporting on Twitter that coach John Fox has named Jake Delhomme the team's starting quarterback for Week 8. There was some speculation that Delhomme would be benched this week due to his poor play this season.
Our View: Delhomme has been awful this season, but the Panthers don't really have a great option to take over for him. Matt Moore and AJ Feeley are both average quarterbacks who aren't likely to change the team's fortunes. There shouldn't be any reason why anyone should be starting Delhomme on your fantasy team.

The Ramblings Of Rosstradamus…Week 7
Seven weeks is enough. Enough to determine the true nature of NFL teams based on their body of work to this point. Though, as always, some questions still remain—can anyone stop the Saints? Will the Browns or Raiders ever be good? Are the Pats and Colts destined to meet in the playoffs once again? When will Jake Delhomme stop killing the Panthers? And countless others…but the Super Bowl contenders are separating themselves from the rest of the pack while the...

Panthers QB situation unresolved
News: Panthers coach John Fox hasn't decided whether to bench quarterback Jake Delhomme. Saying Monday that he doesn't know if the "status quo is the answer or not," Fox indicated he'll decide later this week whether to play Matt Moore or A.J. Feeley ahead of Delhomme, who has an NFL-high 13 interceptions in six games. It's the first time Fox has wavered on Delhomme, who threw three more picks Sunday, two of which directly led to 14 Bills points in Buffalo's 20-9 win. Delhomme has been Carolina's starter since 2003, but has just four touchdown passes on the season. [...]

Delhomme struggles; change coming?
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme's interception total has reached an NFL-high 13 -- with only four touchdowns -- after he threw three more against the Bills in Week 7, finishing 27 of 44 for 325 yards. Coach John Fox said he'd "evaluate" whether Delhomme keeps his job. Delhomme badly overthrew two passes that led to 14 Buffalo points. Delhomme himself hedged when asked if he should remain the starter. "In my heart, yeah, but I mean let's be honest, I don't think I'm a dummy," said Delhomme, whose passer rating is 56.5. "When you're not playing well offensively, you always have to look at the quarterback." [...]
Panthers | Fox doesn’t commit to Delhomme as starter
Charles Chandler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox did not commit to QB Jake Delhomme as the team’s starting quarterback. Delhomme completed 9 of 17 passes for 65 yards and touchdown
Delhomme completed 9 of 17 passes for 65 yards and touchdown while getting picked off twice Sunday, but Carolina still managed to beat Tampa Bay 28-21.
Impacts: Delhomme, who's 9-2 in 11 career starts against Tampa Bay, only attempted one pass in the winning drive _ a 4-yarder for Steve Smith's only reception of the game.
Panthers | St. Smith upset with role following Week 6
The Charlotte Observer reports Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said following the team’s Week 6 game that he is unhappy with his role on offense. "I'm no longer an asset to this team," Smith said. Smith caught just one pass for four yards in Week 6. Smith, however, is regularly double teamed and the Panthers tried to get him the ball deep twice early in the game. "Two guys are committed to him every play," QB Jake Delhomme said. "We try to take shot shots, but it's difficult."
Sanchez still starting for now
Despite throwing eight interceptions in his past three starts, including five on Sunday, Mark Sanchez will remain the Jets' starting quarterback, according to ESPN.
Our View: Those three games have been three losses for the Jets. His ten total interceptions are tied with Jake Delhomme for the league "lead," and if he continues to struggle while the Jets still believe they can contend for a playoff spot, getting benched for Kellen Clemens is a distinct possibility.
Steve Smith angry
Steve Smith was angry after catching just one ball for four yards in the Panthers' narrow win over the Bucs on Sunday, according to the Rock Hill Herald.
Our View: "It's bittersweet," he said about the game. "We get the win, but I have a limited role. So, obviously, I see this game as showing I'm no longer an asset to this team." Yikes. It's unlikely bordering on improbable that the Panthers would deal Smith before tomorrow's trade deadline, but it's clear that as long as Jake Delhomme is still the quarterback in Carolina, he is not going to be the elite fantasy receiver he once was.

Delhomme's bootleg run for a first down on third-and-8 helped
Delhomme's bootleg run for a first down on third-and-8 helped Carolina rally past Washington 20-17 on Sunday.
Impacts: Delhomme still has only three TDs to go with eight INTs, but the Panthers feel the victory could jump-start a turnaround with games against struggling Tampa Bay and Buffalo the next two weeks.
Jake Delhomme completed 16-of-25 passes for 181 yards, one touchdown
Jake Delhomme completed 16-of-25 passes for 181 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 5 against the Redskins. Delhomme went just 5-of-10 in the second half, including an interception that came when he threw behind Muhsin Muhammad, but the Panthers still managed a second-half comeback and he put the game away late with a 10-yard run off a naked bootleg. [...]

Panthers score final 18, edge Redskins 20-17
Aided by a disputed call and Jake Delhomme's bold third-down run, the Carolina Panthers jump-started a sagging season at the expense of embattled Washington coach Jim Zorn.
Fox expects to get canned after season
Head coach John Fox has told friends and some associates he expects to be fired once the season ends, according to John Czarnecki of Fox Sports.
Our View: The Panthers are 0-3 and Fox is being blamed for the poor performance of quarterback Jake Delhomme and defensive end Julius Peppers, two veterans that the team is currently overpaying based on their production. There is ongoing speculation that Bill Cowher could be next in line to coach the Panthers.
Panthers | Smith, Muhammad have not found end zone
Charles Chandler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith and WR Muhsin Muhammad have not caught a touchdown pass so far this season, and neither has caught a pass of over 30 yards. QB Jake Delhomme said the team will continue to go deep with the two receivers.

NFL: Panthers Going Long
The Panthers haven't had much success with the long ball this season, especially with Steve Smith constantly drawing double teams. But quarterback Jake Delhomme told the Charlotte Observer, We're not going to stop trying. Meanwhile, Smith said he is getting impatient because he hasn't had the success he's had in previous year. He's not even the best Steve Smith in the league anymore. I'm actually very, very impatient. I know that's a shock to some of you guys,...
