Russell working harder?
According to the Contra Costa Times, JaMarcus Russell has supposedly begun to work harder during the week.
Our View: It only took two and a half seasons and what seems like a million humiliating losses. Maybe getting benched and then publicly dressed down by head coach Tom Cable finally flipped a switch. No matter how much extra preparation he does going forward this season, however, he will remain one of the worst possible fantasy quarterbacks.

Russell still starting for Raiders
News: After further review, JaMarcus Russell acknowledges he did make some mistakes before being pulled from a game for the first time in his life. After Russell turned the ball over three times in the opening quarter of the Oakland Raiders' 38-0 loss to the New York Jets last Sunday, Russell said he didn't feel like he made any bad reads or decisions in the game. Russell will keep his starting job Sunday against San Diego despite having the second-worst passer rating in the NFL. He says he has put the previous loss behind him and is focusing on playing better this week against the Chargers. [...]

Raiders | Russell not yet in command of offense
David White, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell fumbled the first snap of the game during Week 7 in part because he did not have the offense lined up in the right formation. Head coach Tom Cable called for a "four vertical" pass play from the Raiders' 10-yard line, thinking his aggressive call would catch the New York Jets by surprise. Russell, however, did not get the offense lined up in the right formation, then ignored the checkdown option while holding the ball too long. His ensuing sack and lost fumble were a predictable result. "You wouldn't expect to have that kind of mental error on the first play of the game," Cable said.

Russell starting in Week 8
SI.com is reporting that Raiders' quarterback JaMarcus Russell will start Sunday against the Chargers. Russell was benched in the first half of last week's loss to the Jets.
Our View: Head Coach Tom Cable said today that Russell knows why he was benched yesterday. We know why too. It is because he isn't very good. Russell can't last as the starter much longer, but Raider fans will have to put up with him for at least another week.
Cable says Russell understands benching
Coach Tom Cable says JaMarcus Russell understands why he was benched in the first half of the Oakland Raiders' latest blowout loss.
Russell: "I don't think it's me"
JaMarcus Russell deflected blame on Sunday for the Raiders' humiliating 38-0 loss to the Jets, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Our View: "I don't think it's me personally, I really don't," he said. Uhh, ok JaMarcus. Those words came from a player that completed just 6-of-11 passes for 61 yards and two interceptions before getting benched. It's one thing to not blame the whole loss on yourself, but it's another to accept no responsibility when everyone else in the locker room was. Hoping for Russell's eventual improvement is growing more far-fetched by the day.
JaMarcus will remain the man

Russell still starter despite benching
News: It was so bad for Oakland during a 38-0 loss to the Jets in Week 7 that quarterback JaMarcus Russell, its former No. 1 overall pick, was benched in the first half after committing three early turnovers. He was replaced by Bruce Gradkowski. "I thought he was really out of sorts early in the game," head coach Tom Cable said. "I just did not feel like at that point he gave us the best chance to have the success we needed to have offensively and made the move. JaMarcus will continue to be our starter. There is no issue there." Russell was 6 for 11 for 61 yards, with two interceptions and a fumble. He disagreed with his coach's assessment, saying he felt just fine but that the results weren't there. "I've never been in that situation," he said. "It was kind of shocking to me at first." [...]

The Oakland Raiders pulled quarterback Russell in the second quarter after he committed three turnovers in the first half against the New York Jets on Sunday.
Impacts: Bruce Gradkowski replaced Russell with the Raiders trailing 21-0 midway through the second quarter Sunday. Russell lost a fumble and threw two interceptions before leaving, giving him 13 turnovers this season. Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, has been booed recently by the frustrated home crowd in Oakland as he has failed to complete even half his passes this season.

Sheppard to miss game
Lito Sheppard will miss today's game at Oakland, according to NFL.com.
Our View: Sheppard suffered a setback in his recovery from a quad injury. Sheppard is a good cornerback when healthy, and JaMarcus Russell and the Raiders' aerial attack could benefit with him out today.
Rhodes fully practices
Kerry Rhodes fully practiced Friday, according to the Jets' official website. He has been dealing with a knee ailment.
Our View: The playmaking safety looks to be good to go for Sunday's game at Oakland, so quarterback JaMarcus Russell won't catch a break.
Sheppard misses practice
Lito Sheppard missed practice for the second straight day Thursday, according to the Jets' official website.
Our View: Sheppard suffered a setback in his recovery from a quad injury, and is expected to miss at least one more game. He is a solid cornerback when healthy, and opposing quarterback JaMarcus Russell could benefit from his absence in Sunday's game at Oakland.
Collins thinks he's still starting
Despite passing for negative seven yards in the Titans' massacre loss to the Patriots last weekend, Kerry Collins still believes he is the team's starting quarterback, according to the Nashville Tennessean.
Our View: The cries for Vince Young in Tennessee are starting to get much, much louder, and with the Titans on a bye this week, coach Jeff Fisher could just be waiting to make an announcement until next week. Regardless of whether or not Collins keeps his job, he now rivals JaMarcus Russell for the worst fantasy quarterback.

Campbell keeps starting job
Despite being benched at halftime of the Redskins' Week 6 loss to the Chiefs, Jason Campbell will start over Todd Collins at quarterback in Week 7, according to NFL.com.
Our View: He'll be taking on an Eagles team that just lost to the Raiders. If JaMarcus Russell can quarterback a winning team against Philadelphia, surely Jason Campbell can. If you are a Campbell owner, though, you need to be prepared for anything, most notably adding Collins.
Russell earned his seventh win in 22 games as Oakland's starting
Russell earned his seventh win in 22 games as Oakland's starting quarterback, helping the Raiders to a 13-9 victory over visiting Philadelphia on Sunday. He finished with a season-high 224 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Impacts: Russell has thrown for 200 yards in eight of his 22 starts, winning three. However, he's averaged 138.0 yards per game this season even with Sunday's performance.

Russell showing improvement
JaMarcus Russell completed 17-of-28 passes for 224 yards, a touchdown and two picks in Sunday's 13-9 win over the Eagles.
Our View: Russell had nice chemistry with TE Zach Miller, but still looked uncomfortable throwing to his wideouts. They caught just two balls all game and Russell was targeting them when both interceptions occurred. He had one of his better days overall, but still isn't a worthy fantasy option, especially facing the Jets next week.

Jamarcus Russell completed 17-of-28 passes for 224 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's upset win over the Eagles. Russell still wasn't able to connect with his wideouts as they caught just two balls all game, but Russell did show good touch on swing passes. [...]

Raiders | Davis stresses patience with J. Russell
Jarrett Bell, of USA Today, reports Oakland Raiders managing general partner Al Davis has stressed patience with QB JaMarcus Russell. Davis said Russell still needs more time before he can fulfill his potential, however he also conceded that Russell must play better this season. "JaMarcus, he's got to do better," Davis said. "Forget the cast around him. He knows it. But we've got to fight through it with him."
Davis: got to have faith in Russell
Raiders owner Al Davis said on Friday that he still has faith in embattled quarterback JaMarcus Russell, according to USA Today.
Our View: In surprisingly more sensical than usual statements, Davis pointed out many notable quarterbacks who struggled early in their careers, like Troy Aikman and Warren Moon, but also admitted Russell has to play better. It's nice to see Al making some sense for a change, but unfortunately, his huge investment in Russell isn't likely to pay off the way the Cowboys' in Aikman did. He hasn't gotten better since coming to Oakland - he's gotten worse - something Aikamn and Moon did not do.

Brown over abdomen injury
After being limited by an abdomen injury on Wednesday, Sheldon Brown was a full participant in Eagles practice on Thursday, according to the team's official website.
Our View: He was likely held out as a precaution on Wednesday, and should be roaming the Eagles secondary looking for his fourth interception this Sunday when Philadelphia takes on the Raiders. With JaMarcus Russell throwing the ball, it might not be too difficult of a task.

Russell attempted 13 passes against the New York Giants on Sunday, completing eight in a 44-7 Oakland loss.

Russell admits to weight-related fines
JaMarcus Russell admitted that has been fined for his weight, USA Today reports. The quarterback says he is at 275 pounds. Russell previously shot down the rumors that he has been fined for missing meetings.
Our View: Those fines can't make up for the fact that Russell has failed to turn into even a league-average quarterback. His inability to make plays has severely limited the Raiders offense this season.

JaMarcus Russell completed 8-of-13 passes for 100 yards in the Raiders' horrific loss to the Giants on Sunday. Russell was also sacked a whopping six times and lost fumbles on three of those sacks. [...]
Another tough day for Russell
JaMarcus Russell managed to complete most of his passes in Week 5 against the Giants, but he finished 8-of-13 for 100 yards, no scores, and no picks. He was sacked six times and fumbled three times.
Our View: The Raiders offense continues to be a disaster, and there is no relief is sight. Russell has done nothing to suggest he should keep his job in the near future or that he is the long-term answer.
Miller active
Zach Miller (concussion) is active for the Week 5 game against the Giants.
Our View: The young tight end missed practice on Wednesday and was listed as questionable, but he was expected to start. Miller won't be a safe fantasy start as long as JaMarcus Russell continues to struggle so badly.

NFL: Oakland Elects Bush at RB
Raiders coach Tom Cable confirmed that Michael Bush will start against the Giants Sunday, according to the Oakland Tribune. Mancini's Take: Running back depth isn't a problem in Oaktown. Zach Miller practices
Zach Miller (concussion) practiced for the first time all week on Thursday, according to the Contra Costa Times.
Our View: The Radiers have said all along that he will play this weekend, and that now looks to be much closer to becoming a reality. Miller is tied for the Raider lead in receptions this season, unfortunately though, he has only 11. With a different quarterback throwing to him, he would be a nice fantasy option. Alas JaMarcus Russell is still the Raiders' signal caller.

Raiders | Russell fined for weight, missing meetings?
Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell has been fined by the team for being overweight and being late for team meetings, according to Boomer Esiason, of CBS Sports. "I don’t want to beat a dead horse here, but it’s come to my attention that he has been fined heavily already for being overweight and for being late to meetings. And, he’s already missed one meeting. I’m telling you right now, the other 52 guys on that roster are looking at (head coach) Tom Cable. They’re looking at Al Davis, and they’re saying we deserve better than this. That’s why every time he goes on the field, what’s the quarterback’s job – to be the leader of the other men on the field with them; to inspire them to greater heights. Right now, he is holding them back," Esiason said. When asked whether Russell had indeed been fined and missed meetings, Cable said, "I’m not going to talk about our internal stuff that way."
Raiders | Cable says Russell is not getting help
Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable said Monday, Oct. 5, that poor protection from the offensive line and dropped passes by the receivers are in part to blame for the struggles of QB JaMarcus Russell so far this season. "If you understand football, if he’s getting better protection yesterday you’d see what I’m talking about. He was on target all but really two throws," Cable said. "When you have that many drops – I think there were nine that I counted – if you put nine completions or at least the opportunity of nine completions on his deal, you’d say he might have been as good as anybody in pro football yesterday. If you know what you’re looking at."

Murphy dealing with drops
Louis Murphy had four dropped passes in the Raiders loss to Houston last Sunday, according to the Oakland Tribune.
Our View: When your quarterback is as bad as JaMarcus Russell, you can't be dropping passes, but that's what Murphy did repeatedly on Sunday. He leads the Raiders with 172 receiving yards through four games, but has only one score, and is obviously not a good fantasy option playing in the Raiders' putrid offense.

Russell completed just 12 of 33 passes for 128 yards in Sunday's 29-6 loss to the Texans.
Impacts: Russell has been incredibly ineffective through the first four games of the season. He has passed for 506 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions while completing a mere 39.8 percent of his passes. Next Sunday, the Raiders visit the New York Giants, who boast the league's No. 1 pass defense, allowing an average of 115.0 yards per game.

TE Miller dealing with concussion
Zach Miller suffered a concussion in Oakland's loss to Houston on Sunday, according to NFL.com.
Our View: The last thing the Raiders' putrid offense needed. Miller has been a non-factor this season, but not for lack of talent. He is dealing with a much worse problem named JaMarcus Russell. He will almost certainly be out for the team's tilt with the Giants next week.

Raiders | Garcia critical of players
Steve Corkran, of the Oakland Tribune, reports free-agent QB Jeff Garcia (Eagles) said during a radio interview Friday, Oct. 2, he asked to be released from the Oakland Raiders before the start of the season because of a lack of commitment from some players and him being powerless to effect change as a backup quarterback. "It was to a point where I felt like guys who walked through those doors were just there to collect a check and not really interested in putting everything they had within themselves onto the football field," Garcia said. Garcia added he didn't mind helping QB JaMarcus Russell develop into a better player. However, he felt as if too much was being asked of Russell and that, perhaps, Russell is not ready for a starring role. "It's an unfortunate situation when the entire work ethic and the entire goal of the team is really put upon one guy's shoulder who really isn't maybe ready for that situation or ready to take on that sort of responsibility," Garcia said.

Garcia not heading back to Oakland
ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Jeff Garcia will not be headed back to Oakland this season. Raiders' coach Tom Cable has come out publicly and said the team is not interested in the services of their former quarterback.
Our View: The Raiders are probably wishing now that they would have held onto Garcia for a bit longer, because JaMarcus Russell has been historically awful over the first three weeks. Don't expect to see a reunion in Oakland, but there are still plenty of teams who could use Garcia.
