Russell has solid day
JaMarcus Russell was an effective 12-of-18 for 153 yards on Saturday, but still took three sacks for a loss of 27 yards.
Our View: Russell is looking like he could be an effective game-management type quarterback for the Raiders this season, but is a bye week only option in almost every fantasy format.

Raiders | Russell officially named starter
David White, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable said QB JaMarcus Russell will be the team’s starting quarterback for the regular-season opener. Cable had hoped QB Jeff Garcia (calf) would push Russell to improve, but Garcia was unable to compete during training camp. Cable said, “I've said that it's his job and we'll see how it goes. Unfortunately, Jeff hasn't had much work. We've been fortunate in that JaMarcus has improved. It would have been nice to have someone really pushing him. Maybe we could get him to improve a little bit more.â€

Russell annointed starter
Head coach Tom Cable annointed JaMarcus Russell the Raiders' starting quarterback for 2009, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Russell remains inconsistent
News: JaMarcus Russell started slowly for Oakland in Saturday's preseason game against the 49ers, missing an open Darrius Heyward-Bey on third down of his first drive and tripping over Darren McFadden's feet on third down on the second drive. Russell found his groove later, starting with a 12-yard pass to Zach Miller. He completed an 11-yard swing pass to Justin Fargas and then got a 22-yard gain when Nate Clements was called for pass interference against Johnnie Lee Higgins. After a pair of penalties backed Oakland up, Russell took advantage of a miscommunication between Clements and Mark Roman to find a wide open Louis Murphy in the end zone on third-and-21 to end his night. That was Russell's only completion to a wide receiver all night. He finished 7-for-11 for 76 yards. [...]

Russell throws for TD
JaMarcus Russell was o.k. in the Raiders' second preseason game on Saturday night, completing 7-of-11 passes for 76 yards and a score.
Our View: Russell has yet to look great this preseason, however, and with Jeff Garcia waiting in the wings in Oakland, is not a great fantasy value.

Miller: Russell will miss Schilens
News: Raiders TE Zach Miller said the absence of WR Chaz Schilens (broken foot) will be an adjustment for QB JaMarcus Russell. Garcia returns to camp
As expected, Jeff Garcia has returned to training camp with the Raiders Monday, according to Jerry McDonald's twitter page. It was not disclosed exactly why Garcia was away from the team.
Our View: Garcia will serve as the No. 2 quarterback, and will only hold some fantasy value if JaMarcus Russell gets benched or goes down with an injury.
Garcia to return Monday
According to Jerry McDonald on Twitter, Jeff Garcia is not injured and will be in at practice on Monday.
Our View: It was rumored that Garcia's calf was ailing, but he appears to be fine and will take over the number two quarterback job behind JaMarcus Russell. He was away from the team contemplating his future, but it looks like he's decided to stick around in the NFL.
Russell workmanlike in preseason debut
JaMarcus Russell was solid in limited playing time in the Raiders' preseason opener Thursday night. Oakland's likely starter completed 6-of-9 passes for 50 yards, taking one sack.
Our View: He was the only Oakland QB not to throw for a touchdown, but he was also barley on the field. Thursday certainly didn't hurt his chances to be named the starter, so it probably helped them.
Russell looks poised in pocket
News: Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell played two series during Thursday's preseason opener against the Cowboys, driving his team to a field goal on the opening drive. Russell, who rolled his ankle early in camp, looked poised in the pocket, completing six of nine passes for 50 yards against Dallas' backup cornerbacks and even scrambling for 18 yards on one play. [...]

Raiders | Garcia isn't healthy enough to push Russell
David White, of The San Francisco Chronicle, reports Oakland Raiders QB Jeff Garcia (calf) still is not healthy enough to push QB JaMarcus Russell for playing time at quarterback.
Raiders | Russell remains too inconsistent
David White, of The San Francisco Chronicle, reports Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell continued his ongoing trend Tuesday, Aug. 11, of following up a good practice with a pretty bad one. The team is looking for Russell to put together two consecutive good practices. Timing is a big issue for Russell, as the receivers are on time with their routes but Russell isn't always on time with his throw. He holds onto the football too long still, hoping his arm strength will buy him the extra second to deliver the football. Head coach Tom Cable said Russell needs to speed up and he keeps reminding his quarterback of that. Russell also had trouble getting the football to the receivers Tuesday. Of his 13 attempts to receivers, only three of them were completions.
Russell struggles Tuesday
JaMarcus Russell struggled in training camp Tuesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He remains inconsistent, and head coach Tom Cable noted that he had timing issues hitting his targets today. He is holding on to the ball too long as well.
Our View: Russell remains the Raiders' No. 1 quarterback, especially with Jeff Garcia unable to practice with a strained calf. The rocket-armed quarterback does not look to be ready to trust as a fantasy starter in his third pro season in 2009.
Raiders | Russell struggles Tuesday
David White, of The San Francisco Chronicle, reports Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell had a bad day of practice Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Raiders | Russell showing progress
Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell wasn't as sharp during full team drills Tuesday, Aug. 4, as he was in 7-on-7 drills, but there were times he threw the football very well. He has looked better than any time during the offseason, and has been more consistent than at any time during last year's training camp.

Garcia day-to-day with calf
Jeff Garcia is day-to-day with a strained calf, according to the San Francisco Chornicle.
Our View: This apparently doesn't have too many fantasy implications, as the 39-year-old super vet isn't expected to challenge JaMarcus Russell for the Raiders starting QB gig. Still, if Russell continues to struggle, it wouldn't be at all surprising for the team to change their mind.
Garcia has strained calf
Jeff Garcia is not practicing while nursing a strained calf, according to Jerry McDonald's twitter page.
Our View: It is uncertain when the 39-year-old vet may be ready to resume practicing. He cannot push JaMarcus Russell for the starting gig at quarterback while out of action.
Raiders | Russell puts forth best practice of year
David White, of The San Francisco Chronicle, reports Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell looked far better during workouts Sunday, Aug. 2, than he did at any point during this offseason. He looked sharp and threw with accuracy.
Raiders | Russell checked on by team trainers
