News: Patriots coach Bill Belichick and running back Fred Taylor are hopeful Taylor's ankle surgery Thursday isn't season ending. "We'll list him on the injury report weekly as we always do," Belichick said Friday when asked if Taylor will return this season. "I think obviously if he wasn't going to come back this season, then we would place him on injured reserve at some point. He's not there now, so that wouldn't be the expectation." Taylor underwent surgery to repair ligament damage in his right ankle at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Thursday. Taylor told the Florida Times-Union on Thursday night that the surgery was "more serious than a scope," but doesn't expect it to sideline him the entire season. Taylor told the newspaper he sustained a high ankle sprain and tore "a couple of ligaments." He said he will know more when he speaks to the doctor again, but "will bounce back stronger. I know it. NFL: Ankle Grounds Taylor
According to the Boston Globe's Christopher Gasper, Fred Taylor could miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair severe ligament damage in his right ankle. New England Patriots RB Fred Taylor (ankle) missed the team’s practice Thursday, Oct. 8.
Report: Taylor could miss '09
The Boston Globe is now reporting that Patriots' running back Fred Taylor may indeed miss the rest of 2009 with an ankle injury.
Our View: It was initially thought that he was just going to miss "significant time," but now a "league source" says it could be the entire season. Taylor has 201 yards and two touchdowns on 45 carries so far this season, and had been a pleasant surprise in New England's backfield. Regardless of Taylor's long-term status, the pressure is back on Laurence Maroney and Sammy Morris in the short-term. Neither are likely to be viable fantasy options.

Taylor to require ankle surgery
News: Patriots RB Fred Taylor will likely need ankle surgery after hurting himself on the final play of Sunday's game against Baltimore. A timetable for his return remains uncertain. Taylor is expected to miss Sunday's game at the Denver Broncos after sitting out his second straight day of practice Thursday amid an ESPN report that he needs surgery. He would play again this season unless there are complications, the report said. Patriots spokesman Stacey James said he was not aware that Taylor needs surgery. Taylor, in his first season with New England after spending 11 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, was hurt on his final carry of Sunday's 27-21 win over the Baltimore Ravens, a 3-yard run with 5:09 left in the game. He limped off the field. Taylor finished that game with a team-high 25 yards on seven carries one week after gaining 105 yards on 21 attempts in a 26-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He has 201 yards on 45 carries as part of a four-man backfield rotation with Sammy Morris, Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk. Another running back, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, has been inactive for three of the Patriots' four games but could play Sunday. [...]

Taylor To Have Ankle Surgery
Patriots Lose Their Top Rusher
The New England Patriots are preparing for life without their leading rusher, as Fred Taylor's injured right ankle will require surgery, according to a source close to the situation. The surgery is not expected to sideline Taylor for the season, assuming there are no complications. Taylor injured the ankle on his final carry of Sunday's 27-21 win over the Ravens, a 3-yard rush in which he came up hobbling after charging hard into the middle of the Baltimore defense. He has been held out of practice the past two days. The Patriots have been rotating their backs this season, but Taylor has totaled a team-high 45 carries for 201 yards (averaging 4.5 yards). (ESPN)
FF Today's Take: The Pats have largely been a passing team during the first four weeks while using a mixture of their running backs for the ground game. Laurence Maroney (27 carries) and Sammy Morris (13 carries) will likely see an increased workload with Taylor out but neither are high fantasy recommendations.

Taylor to have surgery on ankle
ESPN.com is reporting that Patriots' running back Fred Taylor will require surgery on his injured right ankle. Taylor is expected to miss significant time, but he is expected to return before the end of the season.
Our View: This is a big blow to the Pats and to fantasy owners who capitalized on his 201 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Look for Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk to pick up the slack, with Sammy Morris and possibly even BenJarvus Green-Ellis getting carries as well.

Taylor out with ankle issue
Updating a previous report, the reason Fred Taylor missed practice on Wednesday was because of an ankle injury, according to the Boston Herald.
Our View: So it wasn't just an old man's day off. The severity of the injury is unknown right now. If the Patriots were a normal team, we'd say Laurence Maroney would pick up the slack were Taylor to be out Sunday, but this being the Patriots, they'll probably just throw more.

Taylor misses practice
Fred Taylor did not practice on Wednesday for unknown reasons, according to the Boston Herald.

Maroney fully practices
Laurence Maroney (thigh) fully practiced on Friday, according to the Boston Herald. He is probable for Week 4.
Our View: Maroney looks to be fit to play, but will have a tough match-up against Baltimore, and will have to fight for carries in a rotation at running back, namely with Fred Taylor.

Status: Out. Out indefinitely
Fred Taylor (ankle surgery) still has not resumed practicing. It's impressive that the Pats have been able to keep him off injured reserve so long. Taylor hasn't played or practiced in seven weeks and remains without a timetable for return. He's deservedly on most fantasy waiver wires.
