News: Patriots RB Fred Taylor was excited for his first day of training camp Thursday in New England. "It feels great," he said. "I'm privileged. We're in a recession and I have a job, so it feels great. It's a different experience." Taylor is competing with Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, Laurence Maroney and BenJarvus Green-Ellis for playing time. Patriots coach Bill Belichick didn't give any hints who has the edge for the starter's spot. "Well, we feel like we have good competition at the running back position," Belichick said. "Those guys all really have proven themselves. Fred, of course, has had a tremendous career. Laurence has done a lot of great things for us. He played very well at the end of the '07 season and then he kind of had a short season last year. Sammy Morris has done a great job for us as has Kevin. [Green-Ellis], when he had an opportunity to play last year, was a good performer. So we'll let the players that we have in the backfield, put them out there, let them compete and let them play. I would think we would be able to get production from all of them because that's what we've gotten in the past." [...]

Status: Out. Out indefinitely
Fred Taylor (ankle surgery) still has not resumed practicing. It's impressive that the Pats have been able to keep him off injured reserve so long. Taylor hasn't played or practiced in seven weeks and remains without a timetable for return. He's deservedly on most fantasy waiver wires.
