The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been named the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Year, beating out Arizona's Kurt Warner and Indianapolis' Peyton Manning.The second quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season, Brees narrowly missed breaking Dan Marino's single-season yardage record, coming up just 16 yards shy. The Saints' disappointing 8-8 season in 2008 was typified by the team's finale against Carolina, a game in which the New Orleans offense compensated for the shortcomings of the defense by rallying from a 20-point deficit, only to lose in the waning seconds on a Panthers field goal.

Philip Rivers finished fourth in the voting for Offensive Player of the Year behind winner Drew Brees, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson tied for second, and Rivers was fourth with six of 50 votes. Rivers led the NFL with a 105.5 efficiency rating, while breaking out with 4,009 passing yards and 34 scoring strikes. He will be aiming to lead the Chargers to the AFC Championship this Sunday against the Steelers at Heinz Field.
