Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports unrestricted free-agent LB Derrick Brooks (Buccaneers) said during a radio interview that he hopes to be able to reach a contract agreement with the New Orleans Saints in the near future. "I really like their franchise and what Coach Payton has done there," Brooks said. "Hopefully I'll get something done real soon." He said his agents are continuing to talk to the Saints about a deal. The Saints have not ruled out the possibility of signing Brooks but do not appear to be in a rush to sign a linebacker.

Updating an earlier report, Derrick Brooks is scheduled to visit the Raiders on Friday, according to the Pewter Report.

Our View: The 11-time Pro Bowler left New Orleans without a contract, giving the Raiders a chance to sign him. Brooks would likely compete for the starting gig on the strong-side if he joins the Raiders, which is a weak link of their linebacking corps.

Brooks and fellow veteran linebacker Derek Smith completed workouts with the Saints on Wednesday afternoon, leaving coaches impressed but uncommitted to signing either one of them.

Impacts: Brooks, 36, is a 14-year veteran who's been named to 11 Pro Bowls. He has played his entire career for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who released him last winter. Saints starting middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma called Brooks "one of my idols growing up." If the Saints sign either player, it would be only as a backup at first. The Saints starting linebacker, for now, appeared to be Vilma, Scott Fujita and Scott Shanle.

PewterReport.com is reporting that free agent linebacker Derrick Brooks worked out for the Saints on Wednesday. Brooks reportedly left New Orleans without a contract, however.

Our View: It doesn't look like the Saints are all that interested, so the search continues for Brooks to find an NFL team. The Raiders have been mentioned as a possible suitor, so we will keep you updated if anything happens there.

Our View: Well, why not. The Raiders have much more foolhardy decisions in the past, and while Brooks has little physically left in the tank, the leadership he could provide is alone worth whatever he might get paid.
