Williams to carry the load in 2009
DeAngelo Williams should get the bulk of the Panthers carries this season, even if Jonathan Stewart gets healthy, according to ESPN.
Our View: Doesn't sound like a bad idea, considering Williams led the league with 18 touchdowns in 2008, and was third in rushing yards with 1,515. Stewart should be a great change of pace back, but the elite Williams will be used like an elite player in '09.

Jon Stewart has lingering pain
Jonathan Stewart is still dealing with lingering pain in his Achilles tendon, according to the Charlotte Observer. He said, "I came into training camp expecting to work my way up from one-a-day practicing to two-a-days, but unfortunately that has not been the case. We have just got to be smart and figure out what is going on and treat my Achilles to where it is going to be good for the team."
Our View: Stewart missed the final seven practice days of training camp and did not practice with the team Friday. He is uncertain if he will see any action in the preseason. Rookie Mike Goodson, who looked good in camp and the preseason, would serve as the primary backup behind DeAngelo Williams if Stewart is not ready to go for Week 1 against Philadelphia, hence making him worth a look as a late-round flier.

Williams rushes for 40 yards and a touchdown
DeAngelo Williams rused for 40 yards on eight carries in the team's preseason game Saturday night against the Dolphins. Williams also added a 25-yard rushing touchdown in the game.
Our View: Williams looked excellent tonight, and with the injury to Jonathan Stewart, Williams has seen his fantasy value soar. Impressive feat, considering he was already a top-10 pick. Look for another big season out of Williams, and he should be going in the first round of most drafts.
DeAngelo Williams ran for 40 yards and a touchdown on eight
DeAngelo Williams ran for 40 yards and a touchdown on eight carries against the Dolphins Saturday night. Miami's front-seven has been stout early in preseason action, but Williams made a quick cut, used a spin move and outraced the defense to the end zone for a 25-yard TD. [...]
Stewart out for Saturday's game
The Gaston Gazette is reporting that Panthers' running back Jonathan Stewart will not play in the team's preseason game on Saturday against Miami. Stewart is still dealing with an Achilles' tendon injury.
Our View: Stewart hasn't practiced in awhile, and his fantasy value is really starting to drop. There has been no word from the Panthers as to when he is expected back, but if he is healthy this season he should have another big campaign. He is a risk, so don't take him too high at your draft. DeAngelo Williams is still obviously the better pick.
Stewart will continue to rest
Panthers coach John Fox says the team has scheduled no further tests on running back Jonathan Stewart's sore Achilles' tendon, even as he continues to miss practice, according to CBS Sports.
Our View: The team is prescribing rest for Stewart's Achilles' tendon. Stewart, who rushed for 836 yards and ten scores as a rookie last season, isn't looking like the greatest handcuff to DeAngelo Williams right now. If he can get healthy, however, that will change in a big way.
Stewart still ailing
Jonathan Stewart missed Panthers practice again on Tuesday as he deals with a sore Achilles' tendon, according to Darin Gantt.
Our View: Even after rushing for 836 yards and ten touchdowns as a rookie last season, Carolina's running game figures to be the DeAngelo Williams show this season, and coupled with Stewart's sudden inability to stay healthy, he's not looking like a great handcuff or reserve running back draft pick.

Jon Stewart will miss game
Jonathan Stewart will miss tonight's exhibition game against the Giants, according to the Gaston Gazette.
Our View: He is still recovering from a sore Achilles' tendon, and was not expected to be ready to play tonight. Stewart has the tools to develop into a solid starting running back in the NFL, but his fantasy value will remain limited while sharing carries behind DeAngelo Williams.
Stewart remains out
Jonathan Stewart missed his sixth straight practice of training camp Saturday while recovering from a sore Achilles' tendon, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Our View: Stewart has looked good in the early going of camp, but his fantasy stock could start to drop if he does not return to practice soon. If healthy, he would be an essential handcuff for DeAngelo Williams.

NFL: Otah Mowing Them Down in Carolina
Right tackle Jeff Otah has regularly de-cleated defenders at Panthers camp, according to NFL.com's Pat Kirwan. The Skinny: Few players define the term “mauler” better than Otah. The man can clear an entire side of defenders in the running game. He’s, in fact, one of the key reasons behind the success of both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart last year. The thing you love about the mountainous right tackle is his mean streak along with his ability to not...

Williams hasn't returned to practice
DeAngelo Williams has still not returned to practice since leaving Friday's session with a toe injury, according to the Rock Hill Herald. The team still expects him to be fine for the start of the season.
Our View: The injury is believed to be very minor, but Williams still hasn't practiced since the incident. It seems unlikely that the team is pulling some kind of coverup, so treat Williams like a top 10 pick until you hear otherwise.

Williams tweaks toe
DeAngelo Williams was forced to leave practice on Friday morning after injuring a toe, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Our View: Williams was jogging around at the team's afternoon practice, however, and the injury looks to be very minor. Don't let it stop you from making him one of the first RBs off the board this year.

Williams off and running at camp
DeAngelo Williams has looked amazing so far in training camp, according to CarolinaGrowl.com.
Our View: Williams is apparently "picking up where he left off last year," which would seem hard to do considering he rushed for over 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns. He should be one of the very first players off your board.

Panthers Taking It Easy With Stewart
Second-Year RB Limited To One Practice Per Day
Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart is only practicing once a day while recovering from a sore Achilles, but has shown quickness and speed so far in camp.Stewart said he still has some soreness in his leg, but is working through it."We'll do whatever is necessary medically with him," Panthers HC John Fox said. "We don't want to wear him out and yet we still want to get him his reps and get him football ready. At this point right now, we're going one-a-day with him and we'll see how it goes." (Gaston Gazette)
FF Today's Take: Given the fact that Carolina RBs combined for 2,589 total yards and 30 TDs last season, there is a high degree of interest in Stewart's durability. Stewart and "Double Trouble" partner DeAngelo Williams took turns being the Panthers' top fantasy RB until the 2008 first-rounder couldn't seem to shake off the injury bug, allowing Williams to dominate the second half of the season. Nevertheless, a healthy Stewart is a must-handcuff for Williams' owners and has great stand-alone value as a fantasy RB3.
Achilles continues to bother Stewart
Jonathan Stewart is still dealing with the after effects of the Achilles heel injury he suffered in OTAs this offseason, according to the Rock Hill Herald's Darin Gantt.
Our View: The injury will apparently limit him to one practice a day during camp. This is not good news for the Panthers, but could be worse, with running back being a huge strength for the team heading into 2009. Look for the highly capable DeAngelo Williams to take on a bigger load in 2008 if Stewart's injury persists.
Stewart absent from practice
Jonathan Stewart was absent from Monday's practice with the Panthers, according to Darin Gantt's twitter page.
Our View: Stewart was unable to participate in OTA's due to a sore left Achilles, but it was not stated exactly why he missed today's practice. If healthy, the second-year back would battle DeAngelo Williams for playing time in the Panthers' ground attack.
