News: The Redskins' running back situation continues to get worse. Head coach Jim Zorn said Monday that RB Ladell Betts is out for the season with a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee, and he also said that concussed RB Clinton Portis will miss Week 12 at Philadelphia and possibly even Week 13 vs. New Orleans as he progressively improves from a hit to the head in Week 9 at Atlanta. Rock Cartwright and Quinton Ganther are expected to shoulder much of the rushing workload for the team's next game at Philadelphia; Cartwright totaled 140 yards on 20 touches in Week 11 while Ganther had 6 yards on three carries. News: Redskins running back Clinton Portis was at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on Friday to have his concussion evaluated. Portis saw the same doctors who examined Eagles back Brian Westbrook, who has suffered two concussions in the last month. Portis was hurt two weeks ago against Atlanta, did not play last week against Denver and has been ruled out for Sunday's game at Dallas. "We're going to make sure we take care of all the details. We're for Clinton getting well," coach Jim Zorn said. "Each day Clinton's done a great job of communicating how he's felt, and that's what it's going to take. I want to be involved with those conversations, not so much to see 'how fast can we get him back,' but just to make sure the young man is improving and getting better." [...]

Betts Likely Starter Against Cowboys

Coach Jim Zorn stopped short of ruling Clinton Portis out for Sunday's game at Dallas, but he said the Redskins' star running back is "very doubtful" to play. "But I don't want to count him out," Zorn said Wednesday after practice. Portis wasn't present at practice and is at risk of missing his second game since suffering a concussion - the second of his career -- on Nov. 8 in Atlanta. Zorn said Portis worked out early Wednesday morning -- to get "a little sweat going," Zorn said -- and Portis experienced some blurriness. Portis attended the weekly team meeting but left Redskins Park to visit a Washington doctor and missed the running backs' position meeting. Zorn laid out a timeline that makes it seem very doubtful Portis will be ready for action against the Cowboys. Even if he stops experiencing symptoms, coaches want to wait a full 24 hours and retest him before allowing him to practice. "I would be very cautious," even after Portis received medical clearance to play, Zorn said.Zorn said he definitely wants Portis to take part in practice before Sunday's game. FF Today's Take: Betts was more than a worthy replacement last Sunday facing a Broncos defense that was allowing an average of just 97.0 yards per game, as he rushed for 114 yards and a TD to boot. He'll look to continue that success against the Cowboys 9th ranked run defense, who've allowed just 4 TDs on the ground this year.

Our View: Ladell Betts will get the call. It is likely to be some time before Portis is back in the fold, and even if he does return in 2009, he may not be the feature back for the rest of the season.

Since his injury, Portis' only public comments have come on his weekly radio appearance.
