Updating an ongoing story, Ryan O'Halloran, of The Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said on his radio show Wednesday, Oct. 28, that TE Chris Cooley's (ankle) surgery to insert three screws for his right ankle fracture was a success. Cooley could be back in four weeks. Zorn said, “The first thought was that he was going to be out eight weeks; this particular surgery was done - it was very non-evasive procedure and it was done in such a way that it if all goes well, will get him back in as little as four weeks.â€
Cooley's season still has life
If you are wondering why there was confusion about whether Redskins TE Chris Cooley was going to be out for the season or just four weeks, you have to understand the audible called in the last 24 hours.Cooley was headed for an operation on his fractured ankle that was going to require a six-to-eight week recovery, effectively eating up the rest of his season. Instead, Cooley went to the best ankle doctor in the country on Wednesday, according to a source. Dr. Mark Myerson of Baltimore was able...
Redskins | Cooley to have pins placed on ankle
Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins TE Chris Cooley (ankle) said on his Twitter page that he was scheduled to get three pins placed in his ankle during surgery Wednesday, Oct. 28. He hopes to be able to return in four weeks.
Redskins: Cooley will be back
News: There's a chance Chris Cooley will be back this season after all. The Redskins announced Wednesday that following surgery on his ankle, the team expects Cooley to recover enough to return in four weeks. The two-time Pro Bowl player posted on Twitter that "Everything went well." Earlier Tuesday, coach Jim Zorn said Cooley would be sidelined a minimum of six to eight weeks, and the team considered placing him on season-ending injured reserve, but they won't now. The team's most reliable pass-catching threat, Cooley stumbled to the turf without contact on the first play of the second quarter of Monday night's 24-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Cooley, who has never missed a game since the Redskins drafted him in the third round in 2004, has 29 catches for 332 yards and two touchdowns this year. [...]

Cooley has successful surgery
Updating a previous report, Redskins' tight end Chris Cooley underwent successful surgery on his injured ankle on Wednesday, according to the Twitter page of Adam Schefter. There is still hope that Cooley will be able to return in four weeks.
Our View: The doctor who operated on the ankle seems confident that Cooley has a chance to play again this season, so we will take his word for it. Keep Cooley stashed on your bench for now, and if someone already cut him loose it might be worth your time to pick him up if you are weak at the position.

Cooley Not Out For Season?
Second Opinion On Ankle Leads To Optimistic Recovery Time
Chris Cooley is expected to undergo surgery on his fractured ankle on Wednesday morning in Baltimore and it's possible he could return later this season.Cooley is expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks, but there is hope that the surgery could hasten his recovery. On Tuesday morning, Jim Zorn suggested that Cooley could be a candidate for injured reserve. That prognosis has changed for the moment. However long Cooley is sidelined, his absence from the offense is "devastating," Zorn said during his Tuesday press conference. "He is such a good player for us all over the field. He is good for our football team. Much like Chris Samuels, he just wants to be around and he is going to want to be involved in what he can. But his [absence] on the field and the fight that he brings to the field--it's going to be a big loss."Fred Davis replaced Cooley in the lineup. Davis caught a career-high eight passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. (redskins.com)
FF Today's Take: Other sources have Cooley back in as little as four weeks, but that not only sounds unlikely, but also unnecessary for the Redskins in what has quickly become a lost season. Owners in deep leagues may want to hold out hope, but owners in shallow leagues should probably cut the cord. Davis is nowhere near the complete TE Cooley is, but he is a gifted receiver and given Washington's offensive line woes, he may be the most targeted Redskin in Cooley's absence.

Cooley hopes to return in 4 weeks
News: There's a chance Chris Cooley will be back this season after all. A doctor's second opinion on the Washington Redskins tight end's broken right ankle Tuesday gave Cooley hope that he can return to the field in a month. The two-time Pro Bowl player will have surgery Wednesday, and he gave details via his Twitter feed: "3 pins go in the ankle tomorrow. Hopefully be back in 4 weeks. Thanks for all the support." Earlier Tuesday, coach Jim Zorn said Cooley would be sidelined a minimum of six to eight weeks and would probably be placed on season-ending injured reserve. But Zorn also said Cooley was awaiting a "final evaluation" from another doctor to make sure. [...]

Report: Cooley might be back
News: NFL Network reports that after an examination by a foot specialist, Redskins TE Chris Cooley might be shelved for only four weeks (three games plus his Week 8 bye) and might return this season. It was initially believed that Cooley's injury would take eight weeks to heal, making him a likely option for injured reserve. Now the team might opt to keep him inactive in Weeks 9 through 11 and have a shot at getting him back in Week 12 when they play at Philadelphia. [...]

Redskins | Davis to spend extra time preparing during bye week
Jason Reid, of The Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins TE Fred Davis had planned on returning to Los Angeles, where he attended Southern California, during the upcoming bye week. However, now that Davis is the team's primary option at tight end with the loss of TE Chris Cooley (ankle), he will stay and prepare at the team's facility. Davis caught eight passes for 78 yards and one touchdown in Week 7. "Not the way you want it," Davis said of his new role. "But this is an opportunity. That's how this league is. One guy goes out, you got to be able to fill the shoes - or try. In this situation, that's why they drafted me in the second round."

Cooley to miss rest of 2009
News: Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley suffered a chip to his tibula (ankle), according to Redskins head coach Jim Zorn. The minimum recovery time is six-to-eight weeks, which means that the team will likely put him on injured reserve to free up a roster spot. Cooley got hurt on the first play of the second quarter of Monday night's 27-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and was carted off the field. Quarterback Jason Campbell, whose first four throws Monday were to Cooley, said: "Losing Chris is big." Second-year TE Fred Davis took Cooley's spot in the lineup and finished with a team-high eight catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. [...]
Cooley Out For The Year, Broken Tibia
Fred Davis Moves Into Starting Lineup
Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley has never missed a game in his six-year career. But that streak seems to be in severe danger after he broke his right tibia on the opening play of the second quarter. His leg appeared to buckle as he was running a route. He had to be taken to the locker room on a cart, and the team said later he broke his leg. "We're quite certain it's broke or fractured in some way," coach Jim Zorn said. "He'll be out awhile. I don't know if it's going to be a season-ending injury yet." (Washington Times)
FF Today's Take: Interesting, as Cooley's injury was not a direct result of a hit but occurred as he was running a route. Fred Davis will take over for Cooley in the starting lineup and is worthy of a look. Davis had 10 targets, 8 catches, and 1 TD on Monday night.
