The NFL has decided against enforcing four-game suspensions
The NFL has decided against enforcing four-game suspensions of Grant and Will Smith at this time, opening the way for the New Orleans Saints' starting defensive ends to play this week and possibly the whole 2009 season.
Impacts: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said it would be unfair to suspend the two Saints players now, when the league has been blocked from suspending two Vikings players for the same offense while their case is pending in Minnesota state court.
NFL Will Continue To Delay Suspensions
Saints' DE and Vikings' DT Combos To Continue Playing
Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Tuesday that the suspensions of New Orleans Saints players Charles Grant and Will Smith for their 2008 violations of the NFL's Policy on Anabolic Steroids and Related Substances will not be enforced at the present time."This situation presents several unique and narrow aspects that I believe call for us to put the good of the game ahead of questions of discipline," Goodell said. "Considerations of fairness, uniform application of our policies, and competitive integrity all support deferring the suspensions at this time. I am not prepared to treat players differently when the same conduct is involved."Last Friday, a federal appeals court in Minnesota unanimously ruled in favor of the NFL in the so-called "Star Caps" case, rejecting all of the challenges brought by the NFL Players Association, including unfounded claims of bias and failure to share information with players about diuretics. The Court of Appeals fully upheld the earlier rulings of a federal district court in favor of the league. The ruling upheld the suspensions of the Saints players. However, the federal court also allowed Kevin and Pat Williams of the Minnesota Vikings to pursue separate claims under Minnesota state law, which prevent suspending them at this time."Because the Minnesota and New Orleans players committed the same violation and had their appeals resolved at the same time, I believe the appropriate step is to defer the suspensions while we pursue both our legal options and continue discussions with the NFLPA," Goodell said. (neworleanssaints.com)
FF Today's Take: This comes as welcome news to the Vikings and Saints, who both stand a great chance at having successful seasons. With the "Williams Wall" intact, expect Minnesota to continue shutting down opposing teams' running games just as effectively as it has done in recent years. With the Saints offense looking like it is clicking on all cylinders, Grant and Smith should have plenty of opportunities to rush the passer.
Goodell holds off on suspensions for now
According to the Associated Press, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has decided not to suspend defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant at this time.
Our View: Goodell stated that it would be unfair to suspend the Saints players for taking the same banned substance that Vikings ends Kevin and Pat Williams took. He was blocked from suspending the latter two men due to a pending case in Minnesota Sate court. Don't think Goodell can't change his mind though.

Will Smith could avoid suspension?
The NFL will consider dropping the pending four-game suspensions of Saints' defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant because it does not appear that the league can suspend Vikings' defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams for the same violation of league rules, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Our View: Smith would rank among a top-10 defensive lineman for IDP leagues if the suspension is dropped, namely as he is healthy again and has aggressive and blitz-happy coordinator Gregg Williams directing the defense in New Orleans.

Smith, Grant likely to begin suspensions next week
Saints defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant may have to begin their four-game suspensions for violating the league's drug policy next week, according to ESPN.
Our View: The court ruling that overturned Pat and Kevin Williams' suspensions does not apply to Smith and Grant because they do not work in the state of Minnesota (the Williams' won their suit by claiming the NFL violated Minnesota drug-testing laws). The court said the suspensions violated only Minnesota law, and not federal law, marooning Smith and Grant. It's a good bet the suspensions will be served as soon as possible.

StarCaps Players Allowed To Play Week 1
Charles Grant And Will Smith Cleared For Opening Week
New Orleans Saints defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith will not be suspended this week according to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. However, the fate of Grant and Smith still is in the hands of a federal appeals court in Minnesota, which has given no timetable for its decision to uphold or overturn their four-game suspensions by the NFL. A ruling could come today, or it could drag on for days or weeks. But the league made the decision not to suspend the players this weekend, allowing both the Saints and the Detroit Lions, their opponent at the Superdome on Sunday, ample time to properly prepare for the game.Saints Coach Sean Payton said on Monday he was confident the league wouldn't enforce those suspensions if a ruling is made late in the week, because the Saints would be too far into game preparations to adjust. Now it appears the Saints will have both players in their starting lineup. (New Orleans Times-Picayune)
FF Today's Take: The hold-up on a settlement in the StarCaps case stems from the appeals filed and won by Minnesota DTs Kevin and Pat Willams. Just as the story suggests, the four-game suspensions could be upheld or overturned at any time, meaning any fantasy owner rolling with the Vikings or Saints defense this season could be facing a down month from that unit at any point this season. The Lions also will have run-stuffing DT Grady Jackson available, but the clear winners from this decision are the Vikings' run defense and the Saints' pass rush.

Saints duo allowed to play in Week 1
Saints defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith will both be allowed to play against the Detroit Lions this weekend while a federal appeals court in Minnesota determines whether or not the NFL's four-game suspension of the pair violates labor laws or not, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Our View: The court could reach a decision this week, but they will be allowed to play in Week 1 regardless of its ruling so both teams have ample time to prepare. Stay tuned.

Smith and Grant planning to play Sunday
According to NFL.com, Saints' coach Sean Payton is planning to play defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant on Sunday unless he is informed by the league that the players' four-game suspensions are being enforced. Both players tested positive for a banned diuretic last season, but the case has gone through several levels of appeal.
Our View: This whole situation with these players is still unclear, so Payton is taking the right approach here. He is game-planning as if he will have the players, and if he is informed they can't play, he will adjust accordingly. It's hard telling what will happen, but for now it looks like Smith and Grant are going to play.
