Cassel Will Continue To Start
Leash Shortened
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Brodie Croyle has a much higher quarterback rating and a better completion percentage, but Matt Cassel has a bigger guaranteed contract. Guess who'll start for Kansas City on Sunday? It will be Cassel facing the Eagles in Philadelphia, coach Todd Haley said Tuesday. But the rookie head coach also said he would not hesitate to make a switch if he decided Croyle gives the winless Chiefs a better chance. (AP)
FF Today's Take: Cassel and the Chiefs face a solid Eagles defense this week. As a reult, all Kansas City players are risky plays in week 3.
NFL: Cassel to Remain Starter...For Now
Matt Cassel signed a very lucrative free agent contract in the off-season to be the starting QB for the Chiefs. After a couple of games, Brodie Croyle, who has seen playing time due to a Cassel injury, has better numbers than the high-priced Cassel. Despite that, Coach Todd Haley is sticking with Cassel...for the time being. “You’ve got to ultimately do what you think gives your team the best chance to win,” Haley said. “If that means another quarterback being...
Chiefs | Sticking with Cassel in Week 3, but not closing door on potential change at quarterback
The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said QB Matt Cassel will be the team's starting quarterback during Week 3. However, he left the door open for a change at quarterback. "You've got to ultimately do what you think gives your team the best chance to win," Haley said. "If that means another quarterback being in there other than Matt Cassel, then sign me up." Cassel had a quarterback rating of 66.3 during Week 2, while QB Brodie Croyle had a quarterback rating of 116.1 during Week 1.
Cassel will remain starter
Matt Cassel will remain the Chiefs' starting quarterback even though Brodie Croyle has outperformed him so far, according to the National Football Post.
Our View: Head coach Todd Haley stated that Cassel will start Sunday's game at Philadelphia, but added that he would not hesitate to pull Cassel if he struggles. Cassel threw two interceptions in Week 2 against Oakland, and is not a recommended fantasy play against a good Eagles' defense on their home turf.
Cassel not looking likely for Sunday
Matt Cassel is "testing" his injured knee before the Chiefs' game against the Raiders on Sunday, but isn't looking like he will play, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Our View: It looks like it will be another episode of the Brodie Croyle show for the Chiefs' home opener. This means you must again temper your expectations for Dwayne Bowe.
Croyle waiting on coach's decision
News: Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) is listed as questionable for Week 2 vs. Oakland. Cassel, who missed Week 1, took limited practice reps all week and is once again a game-time decision. "Yeah, I think that's the safest," head coach Todd Haley said. "If I make a promise now and something doesn't go according to plan or vice versa." If Cassel doesn't play, Brodie Croyle will start in his place. [...]

Cassel game-time decision
Kansas City Cheifs' writer Josh Looney is reporting on his Twitter page that quarterback Matt Cassel will be a game-time decision for Sunday's game against the Raiders. Cassel has reportedly looked better in limited practice this week.
Our View: The Chiefs won't announce anything until Sunday, but all signs are pointing to Cassel starting this week. The team wants to get him under center, but after Brodie Croyle's solid performance last week, he showed he is capable of filling in when necessary.
Cassel limited at practice
Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star is reporting that Chiefs' quarterback Matt Cassel was limited in practice on Wednesday. Cassel looks improved from last last week, but he is still being listed as questionable for Sunday's game.
Our View: Coach Todd Haley believes Cassel is improving, but we won't know until later in the week if he will be ready or not. Brodie Croyle will go if Cassel can't, and he was fairly successful last week.
Cassel remains questionable
Head coach Todd Haley noted that Matt Cassel remains questionable for Week 2 against Oakland after missing the season opener with a knee injury, according to the Associated Press.
Our View: Brodie Croyle would likely make another start at quarterback if Cassel is unable to go. He did a decent job moving the ball against a tough Ravens' defense in Week 1.
Croyle completed 16 of 24 passes for 177 yards, two touchdowns
Croyle completed 16 of 24 passes for 177 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions as the Chiefs dropped their season opener 38-24 against the Ravens.
Impacts: Croyle, who started in place of injured Matt Cassel, fell to 0-9 as a starter spanning three seasons. Asked to assess his performance, Croyle said, "Play well, don't play well - if you don't win, you still have the same feeling and that's where I'm at." Cassel could return as soon as next week, leaving Croyle as the No. 2.
Chiefs | Croyle productive in spot start Week 1

Brodie Croyle completed 16 of 24 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns in the Chiefs' 38-24 Week 1 loss to the Ravens. Croyle came back and played well after being benched for a series in favor of Tyler Thigpen in the first half. [...]
Croyle tosses two scores
After a terrible first half in Week 1, Brodie Croyle finished 16-of-24 for 177 yards, two scores, and no picks.
Our View: Croyle was benched briefly during the first half, and he deserves some credit for showing much improvement in the second half. Matt Cassel (knee) should be ready to start in Week 2.

Croyle returns
Brodie Croyle is back in at quarterback after Tyler Thigpen replaced him the previous series.
Our View: As we write, it looks like the Chiefs finally managed to get a first down. Maybe Croyle just wanted a short break to call the GM and ask for better blockers and receivers.

Thigpen replaces Croyle
Tyler Thigpen replaced Brodie Croyle during the second quarter of the Week 1 game against the Ravens.
Our View: We believe the move is related to poor results, not an injury. The Chiefs offense has looked awful thus far, and everyone is hoping that Matt Cassel's knee will feel better before Week 2.
Croyle will start the Chiefs' season opener Sunday against the
Croyle will start the Chiefs' season opener Sunday against the Ravens because Matt Cassel is sidelined with a sprained left knee.
Impacts: Croyle started two games for Kansas City last season, completing 20 of 29 passes for 151 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. The fourth-year quarterback out of Alabama started a career-high six games in 2007.

Chiefs | Cassel inactive, Croyle starting
NFL Radio reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) is inactive for Week 1. QB Brodie Croyle will start in his place.
Cassel inactive
Matt Cassel (knee) is inactive for Week 1's game against the Ravens, according to Adam Caplan's Twitter update.
Our View: Brodie Croyle is No. 2 on the depth chart, so we would expect him to get the call over Tyler Thigpen. Cassel wasn't a good fantasy play at Baltimore, and Croyle shouldn't be on anyone's radar. We will also downgrade Dwayne Bowe, who should draw double or triple-coverage all day.
Cassel questionable
Matt Cassel (knee) is questionable for the Chiefs' Week 1 game against the Raiders, according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times.
Our View: Cassel reportedly looked gimpy most of the week at practice, and is starting to sound like a true game-time decision. Should he not be able to go, don't expect big things from Dwayne Bowe going against the Ravens' formidable defense with Brodie Croyle throwing him the ball.
Cassel Back At Practice
Status For Week 1 Uncertain
With the Chiefs and their forlorn offense badly in need of some good fortune, they received some with quarterback Matt Cassel's return to the practice field Monday. It remained unclear whether the Chiefs would receive whatever lift Cassel could provide in Sunday's season opener in Baltimore. Coach Todd Haley would not commit to Cassel being ready to play against the Ravens."I think as the week goes on, we'll know a little bit more with Matt," Haley said. "It was good that he was out there and he was able to get through some things."I think it was positive he was on the field." Cassel sprained his knee while being sacked on his first pass attempt in the preseason game against Seattle two weeks ago. He did not play in last week's game against St. Louis. (Kansas City Star)
FF Today's Take: It's likley Cassel will practice on a limited basis this week and will be listed as Questionable for the Week 1 game against Baltimore. Brodie Croyle would likely get the start if Cassel can't go.
The Chiefs will "probably" start Brodie Croyle in
The Chiefs will "probably" start Brodie Croyle in Week 1 if Matt Cassel (knee) is unable to play, according to the Associated Press. Croyle was terrible in Kansas City's preseason finale, but the team lists him as the No. [...]
Cassel in full pads Monday
Chiefs' beat writer Josh Looney is reporting on his Twitter page that quarterback Matt Cassel is in full pads at Monday's practice. Cassel is suffering from a strained MCL that he suffered earlier in the preseason.
Our View: The Chiefs desperately need Cassel to play in Week 1, so the fact that he is in full pads is a great sign. After the awful performances by Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen in the final preseason game, the Chiefs better hope that Cassel will be ready this weekend.
Croyle started Thursday's preseason finale against the Rams

Chiefs | Thigpen, Croyle don’t do much Thursday
The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle and QB Tyler Thigpen did not help much during the team’s preseason finale Thursday, Sept. 3. Croyle finished the game 5-for-16 for 85 yards while Thigpen was 2-for-7 for 49 yards with two interceptions.
Croyle struggles, but not as much as Thigpen
Brodie Croyle was not good on Thursday against the Rams, but lucky for him Tyler Thigpen was even worse. Croyle went 5-for-16 for 85 yards in the game, and Thigpen was just 2-for-7 for 49 yards and two interceptions.
Our View: If Matt Cassel misses any time this season, the Chiefs are in huge trouble. Croyle should remain the backup by default after tonight's game, as he was just less bad than Thigpen. The Chiefs look like they may be in big trouble this season.

Croyle to start Thursday
According to the Twitter page of Chiefs' insider Josh Looney, Brodie Croyle will start at quarterback for the team in its final preseason game against the Rams on Thursday. Croyle took most of the first-team snaps at practice on Tuesday, and Tyler Thigpen served as the backup.
Our View: Croyle has been decent at Chiefs' camp this summer, and he should get the call if Cassel can't go to start the season. Expect him to get some significant time in Thursday's game, with Thigpen coming in later.
