"Obviously [Favre] has gone his way, and we are going our way," Childress said. When asked about getting into conversation again with Favre later on, Childress said: "There's not a chance from my standpoint. I'm going forward with the guys that we have. We'll have a great competition, we'll have a great camp and be a good football team one way or the other. [That] is what I told Brett, [that] is what I told our team." [...]

Favre retires ... for now
"It's hard to admit I'm not 25 anymore,'' Brett Favre said late Tuesday night, when what he'd done began to sink in. The 39-year-old Favre called Vikings coach Brad Childress on Tuesday to tell the coach he won't be coming out of retirement to play for Minnesota.
Impacts: "It was the hardest decision I've ever made,'' Favre told ESPN. Last year, Favre tearfully retired from the Green Bay Packers after 17 seasons in the NFL and three MVP awards - then made an about-face and was traded to the New York Jets. He retired again, had surgery in May to alleviate a torn biceps tendon and then flirted with the idea of coming back again with the Vikings, the Packers' NFC North rival.
Vikings not looking at Vick
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Vikings are apparently not interested in the services of fallen quarterback Michael Vick.
Our View: The Vikings just missed out on landing Brett Favre and likely don't want to deal with more headaches and disappointment this season that would come along with signing Vick. The definitely need an upgrade in the QB department, but for now it looks like they're sticking with Tavaris Jackson.

News: Vikings coach Brad Childress released a statement on Tuesday that confirmed that the team's pursuit of QB Brett Favre was over. According to multiple media outlets, Favre did not want to put himself through the grind of another football season and told Childress of his decision on Tuesday. "It was a rare and unique opportunity to consider adding not only a future Hall of Fame quarterback but one that is very familiar with our system and division," Childress said. Favre cites daily grind as reason for decision
Updating an earlier report, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that Brett Favre reportedly told Vikings' coach Brad Childress that part of the reason he decided to remain retired was the mental and physical grind of a long NFL season.
Our View: Wow. After spending the entire summer assuming that Favre was going to quarterback the Vikings this season, this story is a shocker. We will have a better idea about more of the reasons behind Favre's decision when he makes an official statement, but it looks like he is concerned that he will not be able to handle the grind of an entire season. His agent, Bus Cook, confirmed to The Associated Press Friday that no decision was coming this week. Werder says calls from Jared Allen and Adrian Peterson, and other Vikings saying they're sure they'd make the Super Bowl with him at QB may actually have worked against a Favre return because he's feeling "pressure. Minnesota VIkings coach Brad Childress playing the right cards with Brett Favre
Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress claims he hasn't spoken to Brett Favre in a couple of weeks. But Childress did a smart thing by saying publicly he likes what he sees of Favre's throwing motion from the quarterback's workouts in Mississippi. It was important because the statement gets word back to Favre that he's comfortable with Favre's timeable about coming back out of retirement. By making those comments, Childress might get lucky and have Favre announce his return to the game Friday as...

According to a blog at NFL.com, those close to Brett Favre believe he will make an announcement by Friday regarding his plans for the upcoming season. Favre self-imposed a deadline of July 30 by which he would inform the Vikings whether or not he is going to play.
Our View: It is still widely believed that Favre is going to suit up for the Vikes this season, and we may find out sooner than expected if Favre does announce his decision by Friday. Sometimes reports citing "people close to the situation" aren't always accurate, but we will monitor this situation closely as usual.

Childress spoke to reporters on Sunday at a charity event for former Vikings center Matt Birk. He told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis that he has not spoken to Favre in a couple of weeks. The coach has watched video of Favre working out in Mississippi and says, "I liked his throwing motion, the little bit that I saw on tape." Favre told The Associated Press last week that he is still testing his surgically repaired throwing arm, but expects to give the Vikings an answer on playing for them by July 30. That's the day the Vikings report for training camp in Mankato, and many expect the 39-year-old quarterback to be there with them. [...]

Childress likes Favre's throwing motion
According to a report at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Vikings' head coach Brad Childress told the paper that he has seen Brett Favre on tape throwing to high school receivers and that he "liked his throwing motion, the little bit that I saw on tape."
Our View: The more news that comes out of Minnesota, the more it looks like Favre is going to be playing another season. The Vikes aren't putting any pressure on him, and assuming he has no setbacks with his shoulder it looks like he will be wearing purple next season. The self-imposed deadline is approaching, so stay tuned for updates on his status with the team.

Favre acknowledged he's ``running out of time'' to decide whether
Favre acknowledged he's ``running out of time'' to decide whether he'll play for the Minnesota Vikings this season. The quarterback told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he'll give the Vikings an answer on whether he'll play by the July 30 start of training camp. Favre has been working out with the Oak Grove High School football team three days a week all summer, but added a Sunday workout this week.
Impacts: The former Packers and Jets quarterback said surgery to repair a biceps tendon in his throwing arm was successful and that he has enough velocity to return to the NFL. He's just not sure whether that means he'll be able to compete for an entire season. "I felt like going to New York last year that I still had it," Favre said. "I didn't know my arm was hurt at the time. So that's what I try to get across to people."

Favre melodrama gets end date
Brett Favre has told the Associated Press that he will make a decision about playing in 2009 by July 30.
Our View: The world's greatest ongoing melodrama finally, mercifully has an end date. Expect the answer to be "yes," but don't move him too high up your draft board. Favre threw a league-leading 22 interceptions in 2008, and will be playing for a Vikings team devoid of pass catching weapons.

Favre getting greedy?
The latest news out of the cottage Brett Favre comeback industry has the legendary quarterback supposedly holding out for more money from the team he has never taken a snap for, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Our View: Favre is reportedly in position to command around $10 million a season, while the Vikings would be more comfortable with an incentive laden deal. It's hard to believe someone who threw a league leading 22 interceptions in 2008 could command that much money, but the Vikes will likely have no choice but to pay it. Whenever Favre does officially say he's playing, don't move him too far up your draft board. He has a limited amount of weapons to work with in the Twin Cities, and is coming off a dreadful 2008. There are many better options out there.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Vikings offensive
News: The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell visited QB Brett Favre in Hattiesburg, Miss., last week to watch him throw passes, but it still remains uncertain when Favre will make a decision on playing in Minnesota this season. The story, which credits a report by ESPN.com, said Bevell watched Favre perform in a rigorous throwing session that included an estimated 100 passes. The Star-Tribune previously reported that Vikings athletic trainer Eric Sugarman had made a second trip to check on Favre's progress from arthroscopic surgery on his throwing arm. Favre, according to sources, felt his performance was encouraging. Favre, however, also "warned the Vikings representatives that he might be forced to delay a decision on whether to play until just before the team opens training camp." The Vikings report to camp July 29 and begin practicing July 31. [...]

Favre tries out with Vikes OC
According to ESPN.com, free agent quarterback Brett Favre had a private tryout with Vikings' offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell last week.
Our View: Favre has yet to make a decision on whether he'll play this season and he likely wants to see if his arm will hold up for a full season. He apparently warned the Vikings that his decision may be delayed, which could make him a late addition to training camp that breaks on July 30th. Favre reportedly threw about 100 balls in a pretty intense training session and said he felt some definite pain and inconsistency.

He just wants to make sure his shoulder and arm are healthy enough."
Our View: Well the signs keep pointing to a Favre return, and at this point it seems almost like a certainty. Favre would really shock the world if he didn't come back at this point, so never rule anything out with Brett.
