The San Francisco Chronicle reports that quarterback Alex Smith (shoulder) has yet to throw a football since undergoing surgery before the season, but he expects to be ready for spring drills.Whether he is or is not, it's unlikely he will be making $9.6 million from the 49ers. Expect Smith to find a new home in the offseason.

News: San Francisco QB Alex Smith said in the Sacramento Bee that he was keeping an open mind about playing for the 49ers in 2009. Mike Nolan, the coach with whom Smith had a rocky relationship, is gone, and Smith indicated that salary might not be a major obstacle, either. Smith has two years left on his contract, and he is scheduled to earn just under $10 million in base salary next year, a figure that only the top quarterbacks make. Still, when asked if he'd be willing to take a pay cut next year, the quarterback did not hesitate. "Absolutely," he said. Smith also predicted that injuries to his throwing shoulder, which have knocked him out of action the past two seasons, will not be an issue in the spring. After badly separating the shoulder in 2007, Smith suffered a small fracture in the area just before the regular season. On Oct. 30, he underwent his second shoulder surgery in 10 months, this time to remove a piece of bone that wasn't healing properly. [...]

After two months of silence on his future, the former No. 1 draft pick expressed his eagerness Wednesday to stay with the 49ers next season, even if it means restructuring his contract. "I came here to be a great player," Smith said. "Obviously, I've had some setbacks and things have gotten in my way, and I'm working my way around them. I want to get back out here, and that's something that really inspires me.
