Coordinator Jimmy Raye indicated that his offense won't change
Coordinator Jimmy Raye indicated that his offense won't change at all with Alex Smith now quarterbacking. Raye did admit that the Niners could attempt to "achieve more balance" by taking a few more chances down the field with Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis, but this is going to remain a run-oriented offense. Mike Singletary can see it in Alex Smith's eyes, in his body language. He's a different player now. Confident. Mature. Experienced.
Pashos lands on IR
Tackle Tony Pashos has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a "fractured scapula" in Sunday's game against the Texans, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Our View: Pashos is just a reserve, so this shouldn't have too big of an effect on Alex Smith and Frank Gore.
Smith Replaces Hill As Starting QB
San Francisco Makes Change At QB
The 49ers' quarterback of the past is now their quarterback of the present, and quite possibly the immediate future as well. It's up to Smith to play his way back into the role he was given in 2005 after San Francisco made him the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Coach Mike Singletary announced Monday that Smith is his quarterback, a day after he led the 49ers to 21 points in the second half at Houston by throwing three touchdown passes, all to tight end Vernon Davis."I had to make a decision based on who I felt gives us the best chance to win," Singletary said. "I feel Alex gives us the best chance to win. I think Alex has had a chance to regain some of the confidence, not that he ever lost it. It gave him a chance to settle in and watch Shaun Hill." (San Francisco Chronicle)
FF Today's Take: After struggling on offense during the first half against Houston, Alex Smith (QB, TE) replaced Hill and led the 49ers on three touchdown drives in the second half. We'll see if he can keep up his performance in the coming weeks but his immediate fantasy prospects look bleak as the 49ers travel to Indianapolis this week to take on the Colts.

Smith is the San Francisco 49ers' new starting quarterback.
Smith is the San Francisco 49ers' new starting quarterback. Coach Mike Singletary made the announcement Monday after sitting down with Shaun Hill, who was benched at halftime of the Niners' 24-21 loss at Houston on Sunday.
Impacts: Smith, who hadn't played in nearly two years, completed his first six passes and finished 15 of 22 for 206 yards and three touchdown passes to tight end Vernon Davis - and he nearly led the 49ers back from a 21-0 deficit. Smith, the No. 1 overall draft pick out of Utah in 2005, missed last season after reinjuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder three days before the season opener.
49ers name Smith starting QB
News: Talk about a comeback: The 49ers inserted backup QB Alex Smith at halftime in place of Shaun Hill in their Week 7 game at Houston down 21-0 and nearly led them back to a win. Hitting tight end Vernon Davis three times for touchdowns, Smith completed a very impressive 15 of 22 passes for 206 yards with an interception and 16 rush yards. This was Smith's first three-touchdown game since a 2006 game vs. the Raiders. Head coach Mike Singletary named Smith the team's starter for Week 8 at Indianapolis. [...]

Alex Smith supplants Hill
After taking over for Shaun Hill in the second half on Sunday, Alex Smith will start at quarterback for the 49ers in Week 8, according to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
Our View: Despite throwing an interception, Smith was brilliant in his one half of play, completing 15-of-22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns, bringing San Francisco back from a 21-0 halftime deficit (they still lost 24-21). He is rumored to have a strong rapport with rookie receiver Michael Crabtree, and barring a meltdown on Sunday, the former number one overall pick should keep the job for the foreseeable future.

Smith went 15 of 22 for 206 yards, three touchdowns and one interception Sunday in a 24-21 loss at Houston.
Impacts: Smith replaced an ineffective Shaun Hill in the second half and may have earned the starting job for the 49ers. Fantasy owners should keep an eye open for the former No. 1 draft pick.
49ers-Texans one-liners

This was Smith's first three-touchdown game since a 2006 game vs. the Raiders. Head coach Mike Singletary wouldn't say who would start next week. "I just thought it was time to make the switch," Singletary said. "It was as simple as that. No long, drawn-out thought process. But let's make the change." [...]

Smith tosses three scores in one half
Alex Smith took over at the beginning of the second half for an ineffective Shaun Hill, completing 15-of-22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns against one interception in the Week 7 loss to Houston.
Our View: The 49ers were down 21-0 when Smith replaced Hill, who completed 6-of-11 passes for 45 yards. Smith threw touchdowns of 14, 23 and 29 yards to tight end Vernon Davis, and we might have a quarterback controversy on our hands in the Bay Area. Stay tuned.

Smith has replaced Shaun Hill at quarterback for the San Francisco
Smith has replaced Shaun Hill at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in the second half of their game at Houston.
Impacts: Smith, the top overall pick in 2005, hadn't played since Nov. 12, 2007. He injured his shoulder in practice three days before last season's opener and was placed on injured reserve. Smith led San Francisco on a five-play, 63-yard touchdown drive on the 49ers' first possession of the third quarter. He threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Vernon Davis, his first TD pass since Oct. 28, 2007.

Hill benched at halftime
Shaun Hill was benched in the game against Houston at the start of the third quarter, and has been replaced by Alex Smith.
Our View: Hill had completed 6-of-11 passes for 45 yards in the first half. The 49ers are down 21-0, so head coach Mike Singletary is obviously looking for a spark from Smith in the second half. Also, it's been confirmed that this benching is performance related, and not due to an injury.
