Smith having all-around poor week

Hill leaves with strained back
49ers' beat writer Matt Maiocco is reporting on his Twitter page that quarterback Shaun Hill is suffering from a strained back. Hill reportedly threw one pass in team drills on Wednesday before heading to the sidelines.
Our View: Hill has been named the team's starting QB for this season, but an injury could shake things up a bit. Alex Smith will get the majority of the first-team reps with Hill out, and we will keep you updated on Hill's status when it is released, but it doesn't sound too serious.

Patriots | Tight end race still too close to call
The Associated Press reports New England Patriots TE Benjamin Watson, TE David Thomas, TE Alex Smith and TE Chris Baker are competing for what could be three slots on the final 53-man roster. There is a chance the team could keep all four on the roster because the Patriots don’t have a true fullback on the roster. The Patriots’ tight ends could play as lead blockers, as well as being part of two- and three-tight end formations on short-yardage plays.
Shaun Hill Named Starter
Alex Smith To Backup
Shaun Hill has been named the 49ers' opening-day starting quarterback ahead of 2005 No. 1 overall draft pick Alex Smith (QB, TE), coach Mike Singletary announced before Monday afternoon's practice."I like (Hill's) consistency, he has a commanding presence about him when he gets in the huddle, guys have learned to rally around him, and his leadership," Singletary said. "Alex Smith (QB, TE) continues to do that, has made great strides. I'm very excited about what he brings and what he's had to work through to get this point."So Shaun right now really offers a lot of leadership and I'm excited about that." (San Jose Mercury News)
FF Today's Take: Hill and Smith did little to distance themselves from each other although Hill appeared to be the front-runner from the beginning. Hill could be a nice sleeper for your fantasy team that will be available late in your draft.

Hill annointed starter
Shaun Hill has been annointed the 49ers' starting quarterback for Week 1 at Arizona, according to Matt Maiocco's (Santa Rosa Press Democrat) twitter page.
Our View: Hill was expected to beat out Alex Smith for the No. 1 role, and is worth targeting as a backup with upside in fantasy leagues.
DeVree released by Patriots
Tyson DeVree has been released by the Patriots, according to the Associated Press.
Our View: The second-year pro did not have a real shot to make the Patriots, as they have good depth at tight end with Ben Watson, Chris Baker, Alex Smith and David Thomas.
Smith's X-rays negative
Alex Smith's X-rays on his ailing right thumb came back negative, according to the Sacramento Bee. He hurt his thumb while making a tackle following an interception in Saturday's preseason game against Oakland.
Our View: This is good news, but the 49ers will wait to see how his thumb responds before deciding his workload for the week. He remains in a battle with Shaun Hill for the starting gig at quarterback.

Smith not sharp on Saturday
Alex Smith struggled mightily in starting the 49ers' preseason game against the Raiders on Saturday night, completing just 3-of-9 passes for 30 yards, in addition to throwing an interception.
Our View: Yikes. There has been a school of thought growing that says Shaun Hill will be the Niners' QB this season, and this dreadful performance did nothing to change that.
Source: Hill likely to be named 49ers' starter after Smith fails to impress
Shaun Hill appears likely to be named the 49ers' starting quarterback after Alex Smith's subpar performance Saturday night in the 49ers' 21-20 win over the Oakland Raiders.

Smith to start Saturday's game
49ers' coach Mike Singletary has decided that Alex Smith will start the team's preseason game on Saturday, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Matt Maiocco. Smith worked with the first team offense at Friday's practice.
Our View: Smith and Shaun Hill are in a heated battle to win the starter's job, but we shouldn't read too much into Smith starting this game. Coach Singletary is trying to keep the battle equal, so Smith gets his chance just as Hill did in the first game. This one is close, but Hill may still have the edge.

Hill inching ahead in QB battle
The Press Democrat is reporting that Shaun Hill is taking ahold of the starting quarterback job in San Francisco. The offense seems to move more efficiently when Hill is at the controls, and he may be establishing himself as the team's starter.
Our View: Hill has been the favorite to win the job for awhile now, but it looks like he is establishing himself as the guy. Neither Hill nor Alex Smith has been overly impressve so far this summer, but someone has to win the job, so look for it to be Hill.

Hill outplaying Smith
According to the Twitter page of 49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco, Shaun Hill outplayed Alex Smith in the first preseason game. Maiocco also points out that Smith will have to clearly outplay Hill in these preseason games to win the job.
Our View: Hill is the incumbent, and Smith will really have to impress to knock him out of the job. It looks like Hill will end up winning out, and he should have decent value as a second quarterback in most fantasy cirlces.
QB race still close in San Francisco
Head coach Mike Singletary noted that he does not see any distance between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith in the race for the starting gig at quarterback, according to Matt Maiocco's (Santa Rosa Press-Democrat) twitter page.
Our View: Hill has more upside that Smith, and should beat out Smith for the No. 1 role. The 49ers have a good arsenal of weapons for him to succeed led by running back Frank Gore and tight end Vernon Davis, and Hill would be worth targeting as a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if named the starter.
NFC West training camp one-liners
San Francisco put a "non existent" pass rush on Broncos QB Kyle Orton. (Maybe he would have thrown four picks if they had.)49ers QB Alex Smith played more than Shaun Hill in the team's preseason opener because Hill is "less...
Smith decent in first preseason game
Admittedly Shaun Hill threw just two passes on Friday, but Alex Smith certainly looked good enough to be the Niners starter. The embattled QB was 5-of-7 for 33 yards and a score.
Our View: Tonight basically had zero effect on the Niners' quarterback race. There is still far too little information to draw any conclusions.

Watson not expected to play
Ben Watson is not expected to play in tonight's preseason opener against the Eagles, according to the Boston Globe. It was undisclosed why he will not play.
Our View: His absence will afford Alex Smith and Chris Baker more playing time at tight end. Neither player should push Watson for the starting gig though.
Shaun Hill to start 49ers opener
49ers quarterback Alex Smith will face his old coach Mike Nolan Friday night, which is about as tasty a preseason opening game storyline as you will find.Smith will have to show Nolan what could have been, however, while coming off...
Hill to start for Niners on Friday
According to the Twitter page of 49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco, Shaun Hill will start the team's first preseason game Friday. Coach Mike Singletary insisted that this doesn't necessarily mean that Hill is ahead in the quarterback competition with Alex Smith.
Our View: Someone had to start for the Niners on Friday, and Hill probably got the nod at least partially because he was the starter last season. The competition is going to go on for a few more weeks, but it would seem that Hill still has the slight edge over Smith at this point.
Niners not naming quarterback
The Houston Chronicle is reporting that the 49ers may wait until just before their first preseason game on Thursday to name the starting quarterback for that game. Coach Mike Singletary has said that he will wait until after the third preseason game to choose between Alex Smith and Shaun Hill to start the regular season.
Our View: It has to be tough for coach Singletary to choose between these guys when neither one of them is any good. Unfortunately, one of them is going to be the starter, but they will have nearly equal fantasy value. None.

Smith behind Hill in Niners QB scrum
Alex Smith is currently lagging behind Shaun Hill in the 49ers QB race, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Our View: Smith has looked good on deep balls so far this preseason, but not short or mid-range ones. Entering his fourth season in the league, it's probably fair to start asking if he ever will. Of course, it is very early in the proceedings right now, but it sounds like Smith will have to make some dramatic improvements to win back his old job.
Hill has early lead on Smith
Shaun Hill is currently the favorite to be named the 49ers starting quarterback for 2009, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Our View: Hill has not proven as adept at the deep ball as Alex Smith, but has looked much better on short to mid-range type throws. Of course, it has been only a few days, so don't read too deep into anything just yet.
