Bills Sign 1st Round Pick Maybin
DE Was Drafted 11th Overall Out Of Penn State
Buffalo Bills rookie first-round draft pick Aaron Maybin has signed a five-year contract. Capping four weeks of negotiations, the defensive end was at the team's headquarters to sign on Friday afternoon, his agent, Chafie Fields, told The Associated Press. "Aaron's happy to be here and ready to go to work," Fields said. He is expected to begin practicing on Monday, the team's first session after it returns home following a preseason game at Green Bay on Saturday. Buffalo has two preseason games left, at Pittsburgh on Aug. 29 and at home against Detroit on Sept. 3. Through Friday, Maybin missed 24 practices and two preseason games since training camp opened July 25. He has three weeks to prepare for the Bills regular-season opener at New England on Sept. 14. After sitting out his first year at Penn State as a redshirt freshman, Maybin entered the draft after two college seasons and without a full season as a starter. Though he played 13 games last season, Maybin didn't take over as a full-time starter until the fourth week. But he led the Big Ten with 12 sacks and was voted a first team All-American. (SI.com)
FF Today's Take: The 21 year old is expected to step right into the lineup to improve a Bill's defense that made just 24 sacks last season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations were still taking place with the defensive end, who was selected 11th overall out of Penn State. The new round of talks come after the two sides reached an impasse this week, raising concerns that Maybin won't be ready for the Bills regular-season opener at New England on Sept. 14. Our View: Maybin's holdout lasted 26 days, and when he does sign today there will only be two remaining unsigned picks: Andre Smith of the Bengals and Michael Crabtree of the 49ers. Maybin has missed valuable camp time, but now that he is in he should have a chance to contribute early in the season.

Contract talks between the Buffalo Bills and Maybin have stalled, and neither side is offering positive signs a deal is close.
Impacts: Neither the team nor Maybin's camp will offer specifics on how far apart they are, but the Bills are becoming concerned that the defensive end, selected 11th overall out of Penn State, will not report soon enough to be ready for the regular season - less than four weeks away. Maybin has missed 21 practices, 15 walkthroughs, countless film study sessions and two preseason games since the Bills opened camp in suburban Rochester on July 25.

Maybin nearing deal with Bills
Aaron Maybin is reportedly nearing a deal with the Bills, according to Matt Maiocco's (Santa Rosa Press-Democrat) twitter page. He may sign by the end of the weekend.
Our View: The first-round pick needs work at defending the run and shedding blocks, and is missing valuable time in training camp while a holdout. His instincts need refinement as well.

Maybin, Bills getting closer
The Buffalo News is reporting that the Bills are moving closer to signing first-round pick Aaron Maybin. Both sides have been talking, and the team hopes they can get the deal done this week so Maybin can play in the final three preseason games.
Our View: The Bills haven't really been close to a deal with Maybin yet, so this has to be a good sign. As long as the two sides keep talking, look for something to get done in the coming days. The holdout will likely hurt Maybin's chances of making an instant impact on the team.

Maybin waiting for other rookies
News: The slow pace of Buffalo Bills rookie defensive end Aaron Maybin's contract talks are partly the result of another unsigned first-round pick: San Francisco wide receiver Michael Crabtree. Former NFL linebacker LaVar Arrington, Maybin's publicist and friend, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Crabtree's stalled negotiations are the reason Maybin has missed the first two weeks of training camp and the Bills preseason opener against Tennessee last weekend. "This Crabtree kid is putting people in this predicament," Arrington said. "I just think people's hands are tied until this guy gets around to doing what he's going to do." Crabtree was drafted 10th overall, one pick ahead of Maybin, who like Arrington played college football at Penn State. With Crabtree unsigned, it makes it difficult to determine Maybin's value. Rookie contracts are traditionally slotted in descending order of where the player was drafted. Crabtree's contract is not the only issue: Four of the five players - including Crabtree - selected ahead of Maybin remain unsigned. That includes No. 9 pick, Green Bay's B.J. Raji, who is a defensive tackle and likely to have a comparable contract to Maybin, because they're both defensive linemen. Arrington expressed hope that a deal can be reached soon, because Maybin is eager to start practicing. "He was in tears not being able to be out there Sunday," said Arrington, who watched the Bills preseason game with Maybin on TV. "He's a good kid. Hopefully we get it done quickly." [...]

Bills | Lack of progress in Maybin talks blamed on Crabtree
The Associated Press reports former NFL LB LaVar Arrington, publicist for Buffalo Bills first-round draft choice DE Aaron Maybin, said the reason the Bills and Maybin have not agreed to a contract is because San Francisco 49ers first-round draft choice WR Michael Crabtree, who was selected right before Maybin, continues to hold out. "This Crabtree kid is putting people in this predicament," Arrington said. "I just think people's hands are tied until this guy gets around to doing what he's going to do."

Maybin, Bills not close to deal
According to the Buffalo News, Bills' first-round pick Aaron Maybin is not close to signing a contract with the team. Maybin has missed all of training camp due to the holdout, and it doesn't look like he will join the team anytime soon.
Our View: Once again, all rookie contract issue go back to Michael Crabtree, and this one is no different. Maybin is likely waiting to see what Crabtree gets as the tenth pick before he signs as the 11th pick. This one could be long and get ugly before it's all said and done.
The Bills are still not close to signing No. 11 pick Aaron Maybin.
