The lack of off-season moves by the Houston Rockets may be an indication that they are holding out hope for a return of Yao Ming. It seems the Rockets are reluctant to blow up the roster, an admission that Yao is a lost cause, but they don't have room to sign a major free agent without unloading a significant number of contracts. Yao undergoes successful surgery
News: Rockets center Yao Ming had surgery Tuesday to repair a broken bone in his left foot. The team announced the surgery was performed at Memorial Hermann Hospital by Dr. Tom Clanton, the Rockets' team physician, along with Dr. Bill McGarvey. "Everything went according to plan, and we were able to achieve not only fixation of the broken bone but also realignment of the bones to improve the stress pattern on his foot," Dr. Clanton said in the statement. "We expect him to be immobilized in a cast and using crutches for at least 6-8 weeks." [...]

Yao undergoes successful procedures
Yao Ming underwent two successful surgeries on his fractured left foot on Tuesday, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Our View: One repaired the hairline fracture in the foot, and another attempted to realign the bones in the foot "in an effort to prevent the recurrence of the injury." The Rockets have not officially said how long they expect Yao to be out, only that he is planning on participating in training camp in October 2010. It should be a long season for the team in 2009-10.

Aussie Andersen signs with Houston
David Andersen has agreed to a two year contract with the Rockets, according to Fox Houston.
Our View: Andersen was traded to Houston from Atlanta earlier last week. An Australian, Andersen is a seven foot center the Rockets hope will help offset the loss of Yao Ming for the season. He isn't likely to be much of a fantasy contributor in 2009-10, but should stay on your radar just in case.
Yao unlikely to play next season
Houston center Yao Ming will have surgery on his broken left foot next week and will likely miss all of next season, the latest blow to the Rockets' faltering bid to return to the NBA's elite. The team said Friday that there is no timetable set for the return of the 7-foot-6 Yao, a seven-time All Star, but that he is "expected to be available for the team's training camp in...
Yao unlikely to play next season
Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will have surgery on his broken left foot next week and may miss all of next season before coming back for a training camp that doesn't begin until October 2010. The team's announcement Friday signals that the 7-foot-6 Yao doesn't plan on retiring, but it doesn't appear like the seven-time All-Star will be around to help them next season, either.
Yao opts for surgery, out for 2009-10
News: Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will have surgery on his broken left foot next week and the team said Friday he might not be available until the training camp before the 2010-11 season. The Rockets said the 7-foot-6 Yao chose a surgery that will involve a bone graft to promote bone regeneration. He's also hoping to reduce the arch in the foot by realigning and restructuring the bones. [...]
Yao to have surgery, miss season
According to the Houston Chronicle, Yao Ming will undergo surgery on his fractured left foot next week, and will likely miss the entire 2009-10 NBA season.
Our View: Yao's surgery will include a bone graft and realignment in his left foot, but it should alleviate some of the stress in the area (which is what likely caused the hairline fractures he has been plagued with the last two seasons). There is currently no timetable for his return, but since the team was granted a "disabled player exception", all signs point to him missing the entire season. Retirement isn't out of the question, but seems unlikely at this point as the surgery is being performed to prevent future injury.

Yao buys Chinese team, not retiring
News: NBA star Yao Ming says his purchase of his former team, the financially troubled Shanghai Sharks, was motivated by the desire to help the club that jump-started his career rather than by early retirement plans. The 7-foot-6 Houston Rockets center, currently sidelined with a foot injury, signed an agreement this week to purchase all of the shares of the Sharks team for an undisclosed amount of money. "Two generations of my family have fought for this team and some of the best memories of growing up in Shanghai are inseparable from the team," said Yao said in an interview Friday with the official Xinhua News Agency. "Playing in the NBA over the past few years, I have always cared about the Sharks and hoped the best for them." [...]

Ratliff on Rockets' radar?
The Rockets are reportedly interested in signing unrestricted free agent Theo Ratliff, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Our View: The Rockets need size and depth in their frontcourt after losing Ron Artest to the Lakers, and with Yao Ming's playing status in question due to his foot injury. Ratliff only averaged 12.6 minutes per game with the Sixers last season, and his fantasy stock could improve with more playing time in Houston.

Ming to make decision on treatment in a few days
Yao Ming is expected to make a decision in the next few days regarding how he'll handle the treatment of his fractured left foot, according to ESPN.
Our View: Ming could choose to immobilize his foot for three months and hope that it heals on its own, or opt to undergo surgery, which would be a safer bet but almost surely keep him out the entire 2009-10 NBA season. There are also apparently combinations of rest and surgery that he can consider, but we won't know what he plans to do until he comes out to the public in the next few days.

Rockets GM Morey woos Gortat at midnight
Orlando Magic center Marcin Gortat has never been so popular. Worried about the potential loss of All-Star center Yao Ming, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey launched an all-out bid Wednesday to land Gortat, best known as the backup to Magic superstar Dwight Howard. The Mavericks are interested, too, and maybe there are others.
Rockets GM Morey woos Gortat at midnight
For a backup center, Orlando's Marcin Gortat is surprisingly popular. At least in Houston, where the future of Yao Ming is uncertain. Rockets general manager Daryl Morey launched an all-out bid to land the backup to Dwight Howard on Wednesday, showing up at Gortat's home in Orlando just after midnight (Eastern time), virtually the minute teams were officially allowed to begin negotiating...
Mavs like Gortat
According to ESPN.com, the Mavericks are pursuing free agent Marcin Gortat.
Our View: The Mavs are in need of a big man and seem to be very interested. The Rockets are also in hot pursuit, but with Yao Ming's injury status Gortat may want to look to Dallas. The Knicks and Pacers are also supposedly interested.
