Jason Varitek exercised his $3 million option to remain with the Red Sox. Varitek could earn up to $2 million in additional incentives based on playing time, but since Victor Martinez is expected to be the full-time catcher in 2010, he is unlikely to meet the appropriate criteria. The 37-year-old backstop batted just .209/.313/.390 with 14 home runs and 51 RBI in 2009 and would have been hard-pressed to find a better deal on the open market. At the very least, he'll be Josh Beckett's personal catcher.

Mike Lowell isn't fazed with being the subject of trade rumors. "I figure I am no stranger to trade rumors and I understand the team’s desire to always look to upgrade," Lowell said in an e-mail. "This situation is much different than last year because I was hoping to avoid a very awkward situation of rehabbing in order to get traded if the Teixiera signing would have occurred." Lowell, who has one year and $12 million remaining on his contract, will become expendable if the Red Sox are able to add a big bat like Adrian Gonzalez. With a hip injury and the addition of Victor Martinez, the 35-year-old third baseman was used sparingly down the stretch, finishing with a .290/.337/.474 slash-line to go along with 17 homers and 75 RBI.Source: Boston Herald

Buster Olney checks in two days after the Yankees' 27th World Series. His thoughts: Jeremy Hermida to the Red Sox is a small-market-team-dumping-talent move that will be replicated time and again this winter -- and Roy Halladay will likely stay in Canada.

A top prospect and former first-round pick, Hermida fell well short of lofty expectations during four seasons with the Marlins, strongly suggesting a change of scenery would be in everyone's best interest. It's too soon to tell how Hermida, a left-handed -hitting hitter who can play both corner outfield spots, will fit into Boston's plans next season. For now, he serves as insurance in case left fielder Jason Bay opts to sign elsewhere this offseason. At worst, the Red Sox have themselves a talented 25-year-old, fourth outfielder with plenty of untapped potential. Florida's decision to give up on Hermida opens the door for a starting outfield trio of Chris Coghlan, Cameron Maybin and Cody Ross. WEEI.com's Rob Bradford reports Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said OF J.D. Drew is one of the most valuable outfielders in the league. "There's always been a discrepancy between how valuable a player he is and how he's viewed by a certain element of the fan base, and the media in particular," Epstein said. "Over the last two years I think he's been one of the top two or three in the league, and this past year, again, one of the top two or three most valuable outfielders in the American League. And yet if you simplify the game down to what somebody's batting average was, how many home runs they hit or how many RBIs they had, which is what we all grew up doing, but by today's standards is a pretty primitive way to look at the game."

Drew submitted his typical strong campaign in ’09, ranking third among AL outfielders with a .914 OPS. While he wasn’t a prolific run-producer, his astute batting eye (.392 on-base percentage) and formidable power stroke made him a rock-solid option in all formats. His lack of durability -- he’s averaged 33 games missed over the last three years -- is the only drawback to his value, but his production has remained a constant when he’s been in the lineup, which is why he’ll once again be worthy of a mid-round pick comes draft time 2010.

After a disappointing 2008 -- during which he went 2-9 with a 6.75 ERA -- Buchholz showed this season why the Red Sox refused to give up on him. He was actually better than his numbers would indicate, as he enjoyed a late-summer stretch during which he went 6-0 with a 1.05 ERA over eight starts. Not coincidentally, that dominant run coincided with the Red Sox separating themselves in the Wild Card race. With a strong start in Game 3 of the ALDS behind him, the 25-year-old righty proved he’s ready for the big stage, another indicator that he’s primed to ascend to fantasy-stud status next year.

"It’s a good feeling.’’ Buchholz went 7-4 with a 4.21 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 16 starts during the regular season and held the Angels to two runs in five innings during Game 3 of the ALDS. It’s clear that the heavy workload -- both mental and physical -- he endured in the World Baseball Classic seriously affected his preparation for the season. With that said, he came back from his stint on the shelf a different pitcher, going 3-1 with a 2.22 ERA and 20/12 K/BB ratio over four starts and looking much more like the guy who won a combined 33 games in his first two years a big leaguer. Considering he’s opted to more strictly adhere to the strength and conditioning program advocated by the Red Sox, a big comeback could be in store for the talented righty in 2010. John Tomase, of the Boston Herald, reports Boston Red Sox SP Tim Wakefield (back) said he is feeling healthy three weeks removed from surgery. His surgeon said there is only a 6 percent chance that Wakefield will have a recurrence of the disc problems that hurt him this year. "I feel phenomenal," Wakefield said. "As soon as I got the grogginess out of my system from the anesthesia, I was doing laps around the nurses' station. I feel good. I'm not limping around. There's no more pain shooting down my leg, calf, hamstring and hip. I'm working to regain the strength I lost in my leg."

After undergoing back surgery in October, Tim Wakefield (back) is walking without the limp in his left leg that hampered him during the latter part of the 2009 season. "I feel great," Wakefield said. "I’m getting more strength in my calf and my hamstring. As a matter of fact, the doctor came in soon after surgery and I was doing laps around the nurses station with my wife with my IV without limping. It was that instantaneously. Dr. (Lawrence) Borges did a phenomenal job. He even said to me that he was surprised that I was pitching because the fragment they took out of my back was pretty big." The 43-year-old knuckleballer agreed to a two-year contract with the Red Sox on Monday and should be ready for the start of spring training.Source: WEEI.com

Michael Bowden was knocked around for seven runs on seven hits over three innings in his first big-league start of the 2009 season on Monday night. Bowden had posted a 7.84 ERA over six relief appearances for the Red Sox this season and looked no better tonight than those numbers would suggest. He struck out three and issued only one walk but yielded seven hits and four of them went for extra bases. He might get another start but clearly should be avoided.

News: Boston SP Michael Bowden, who got the nod on Monday against Toronto with Josh Beckett getting scratched, did not resemble Beckett in the start against the Jays. Bowden gave up seven runs on seven hits and a walk and lost as he lasted just three innings in a game that went seven and was shortened by rain. This was Bowdens first start of the season as he had been pitching in relief. Hes now 0-1. Bowden allowed two homers and struck out three. His ERA is at 10.80 on the year.

While Papelbon’s year will be defined by his breakdown in Game 3 of the ALDS vs. the Angels, he did enjoy a strong campaign, holding opposing hitters to a minuscule .213 batting average against and blowing only three saves. His big problem was control, as the 24 walks he issued were more than his last two seasons combined. He shed those issues down the stretch, though, compiling an excellent 29/4 K/BB ratio over the last two months of the season. Given his status as a hardened closer, owners needn’t be concerned about his mindset going forward. Papelbon will come back in 2010 with a renewed sense of determination and reaffirm his place among the elite firemen in the game.

Bard, Boston’s prized flame-throwing prospect, transitioned quickly and seamlessly to the big leagues upon his callup in early May. Of course, having a fastball that routinely touches 100 mph certainly helped him settle in. What happens with him going forward is something owners will want to monitor. There’s no doubt the Red Sox envision him as their closer of the future, but that future could suddenly become 2010 if the club opts to deal Jonathan Papelbon. While that scenario is possible, it’s unlikely. For the time being, it looks like Bard will be one of the most dominant setup men in the game.

General manager Theo Epstein said the Red Sox won't rush Daniel Bard into the closer role. "I think he has the physical ability to do that and I think we saw as he developed over the course of the year he has the mental make-up to do that as well," said Epstein. "...This is somebody who is still really a work in progress and while he may have the ability to do something it might not be the best thing for the long-term and his career if we force him into something." The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 3.65 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 63/22 K/BB ratio in 49 1/3 innings in his rookie season. Jonathan Papelbon certainly showed some warning signs in 2009, capped by his miserable performance in Game 3 of the ALDS, however if it is unclear whether the Red Sox will explore trading him.Source: WEEI.com Related: Jonathan Papelbon (click again to close) | RP | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi, of FOXSports.com, report Japanese P Ryota Igarashi could be one of the most prized free-agent relief pitchers this offseason. He is drawing comparisons to Boston Red Sox RP Hideki Okajima and former MLB RP Akinori Otsuka. One scout described him as a "solid middle reliever" who has a "good arm when healthy." Most teams will view him as a setup man this offseason.

The Providence Journal reports Boston Red Sox RP Manny Delcarmen (back/neck) is all right with his omission from the American League Division Series roster following a car accident last week. "Not really. It's understandable with the whole car accident and stuff. They know I want to be in there," he said. "I say I'm good, but they feel like I'm not 100 percent. Hopefully, we keep playing and get to the next round so I can get on the roster. I just have to stay ready because you never know what can happen."

Delcarmen has struggled mightily of late, posting a 7.27 ERA in 29 games after the All-Star break. But a car accident on Saturday, which left Delcarmen with some recurring back and neck stiffness for a couple of days, was the last blow that determined he wouldn't be a participant against the Angels. No word yet on whether the righty would be available if the Red Sox advanced to the ALCS.
