Martinez sat in an effort to heal from the bruise he suffered when fouling a CC Sabathia fastball off his knee Saturday night. He was taken to nearby Lutheran Hospital after leaving the game after the first inning. X-rays on his knee were negative. The catcher said that he is receiving ice treatment and can do squats in the pool, but is still very sore and was unsure when he'd be ready to play again.

The Indians said X-rays were negative and Martinez, hitting .350 with seven homers and 36 RBI, is day to day with a bruise. "Victor's a great friend, but that's baseball and you have to focus on your game and forget everything else," Yankees starter CC Sabathia said. He fouled an inside pitch off his knee, just above the guard and rolled around face down as manager Eric Wedge and trainer Lonnie Soloff came out to assist him. The switch-hitter slowly got to his feet, tried to jog, but stopped after only a couple of steps. Martinez insisted on staying in the game and fouled off the next pitch before sending a slow roller toward second baseman Robinson Cano.
