Trevor Hoffman is not likely going to be offered salary arbitration by the Padres, according to MLB.com.The Padres would like to talk with Hoffman (Type-A free agent) about returning to San Diego in 2009, but there has been no communication between the two sides since October, when the team pulled its one-year, $4 million offer from the table. If the Padres offered the all-time saves leader arbitration and he accepted, his 2009 salary would be decided through the arbitration process. Hoffman made $7.5 million in 2008, and it's likely his salary would be closer to that number than the Padres' offer last month of $4 million.

Trevor Hoffman's agent, Rick Thurman, confirmed Tuesday what was pretty apparent when the Padres pulled their $4 million offer to his client Monday - the all-time saves leader will not be returning to San Diego, according to the AP. Thurman and his client are upset at how the situation was handled, as Hoffman had requested a meeting with GM Kevin Towers, CEO Sandy Alderson and owner John Moores to discuss his future and the club's direction, but a meeting was denied and the two sides have parted ways. "Trevor's unhappy with the way they've dealt with the situation," Thurman said. "I think if they didn't want him back, they should have just said they want to go a different direction, go younger, or, 'Listen, we're going to cut payroll,' and sit down and have a man-to-man, face-to-face talk with him. I think he deserves that respect. Any player deserves it, but this is Trevor Hoffman. He's meant a lot to that organization."We have to side with Thurman and Hoffman here, as this move seems to have been made in very poor taste by the Pads. Hoffman has previously said that he doesn't want to leave San Diego because of the strain it would put on his family, but clearly he will have to go elsewhere if he wants to continue pitching. He had a nice 2008 season, and he'll surely be able to find work somewhere if he chooses to continue his career. Heath Bell is the odds-on favorite to be the closer in San Diego now.

The Associated Press reports free-agent CL Trevor Hoffman (Padres) is upset with the way the San Diego Padres handled his situation, according to his agent, Rick Thurman.
