The Padres are waiting to hear from closer Trevor Hoffman regarding their contract offer that they made to him earlier in the week, according to the San Diego Tribune. On the final day of the season, Hoffman said he wants to pitch for the Padres in 2009 and beyond and realizes his negotiating leverage isn't ideal. "I don't want to go anywhere else," said Hoffman, whose save conversion rate this year was tied for second in the NL. "It would put a big strain on my family, and the grass isn't always greener someplace else."Hoffman, 40, drew a $7.5 million salary this year. He has strongly implied that he will accept a pay cut to return. A closing job should not be assumed for Hoffman as the Padres are attempting to rebuild.
