Updating previous reports, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports St. Louis Cardinals SP Todd Wellemeyer said he has lost 5 mph on his fastball this season. "Last year I was throwing 94-96 (mph), this year I'm topping out at 90-91," Wellemeyer said. "I don't know what it is but there's definitely a difference. It makes things more of a challenge, that's for sure." Pitching coach Dave Duncan suggests Wellemeyer is trying to be too precise with his pitches, an observation Wellemeyer doesn't dispute. But Wellemeyer says the reason is his diminished velocity, which makes his mistake pitches more vulnerable.

Unlike in his last start, Wellemeyer pitched to contact Thursday (0 BB, 1 K). Unfortunately, the result was the same. After a three-start run in which he allowed just five earned runs in 16 1/3 innings, Wellemeyer has now regressed with a 7.62 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP over his last two turns. After a solid 2008 campaign, he�s been very inconsistent this year and remains useful only in deep NL-only leagues. His next start will be a tough one against Detroit on June 17.

Our View: After a solid 2008 season in which he finished with a 3.71 ERA, Wellemeyer has regressed in 2009 and is no longer much of a fantasy option. If you think he has a good matchup, he could be an acceptable spot starter, but he is no longer worth a roster spot at this point.
