Wakefield not himself in finale
News: Boston SP Tim Wakefield returned to the mound on Wednesday to face the Toronto Blue Jays and Roy Halladay. It did not end well for Wakefield. Wakefield has been pitching through a displaced disk fragment in his back that's pushing against a nerve and causing weakness in his leg. Apparently, it bothered him on Wednesday. Wakefield lasted just three innings as he allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out two and gave up two homers. His record finishes at 11-5 on the season. His ERA is 4.58. [...]
Wakefield roughed up by Jays
Tim Wakefield was rocked for five earned runs on seven hits over a mere three innings in Wednesday's 12-0 loss to the Jays at Fenway Park. He had two walks with two strikeouts, and gave up two homers.
Our View: The knuckleballer is now winless over his last four starts, and allowed four or more earned runs in each of his last three. He had a strong first half of the season before being hindered by injuries down the stretch.

Not the note that Red Sox fans or fantasy owners wanted to see
Not the note that Red Sox fans or fantasy owners wanted to see Wakefield close on, to say the least. The veteran knuckleballer is kind of a fringe-y fantasy play even under the best of circumstances, but his struggles with injury during the second half negated what was shaping up to be one of Wakefield's best seasons. After being chosen for his first All-Star Game and running up an 11-3 record over the first half, Wakefield threw just 21 innings after the All-Star break and posted a 6.00 ERA during that stretch.
