Wakefield woke up feeling a little better on Sunday and his limp was less noticeable. He doesn't plan on another six-week disabled-list stint, something that happened last time when the back problem turned into a nerve issue that caused weakness in his left leg. "We'll go from there and see if it takes, and if so, I'll be pitching in a week or so and be back," said Wakefield. Though Wakefield pitched seven terrific innings (one run) in his first start back on Aug. 26, he realized quickly that something might be awry with his back again. "I felt it during the game, like in the third inning," said Wakefield. For the short term -- as in the rest of the season -- the 43-year-old Wakefield hopes that the shot will do the trick.

Wakefield to get cortisone shot Monday
According to the Twitter page of Red Sox's beat writer Amalie Benjamin, starter Tim Wakefield is planning to get a cortisone shot in his back on Monday. Wakefield is hoping he can resume throwing by Wednesday.
Our View: Wakefield has struggled to walk over the last few days, so hopefully the shot will help him significantly. The team doesn't know when he will be able to start again, and fantasy owners shouldn't be relying on him down the stretch. He should be able to come back, but his injury looks like something that could linger all season.

An impressive return from the ageless veteran considering the length of his recent layoff. Wakefield's success on the night can largely be attributed to his pounding of the zone as he tossed 73 of his 94 pitches for strikes and consistently worked ahead in the count. The 43-year-old knuckleballer will look to grab his first win in nearly two months when he does battle with the Rays on Sept. 1.

Tim Wakefield only allowed one earned run on six hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the White Sox at Fenway Park. He had one walk and three strikeouts.

The 43-year-old knuckleballer made his first minor league rehab start on Saturday, allowing two runs and three hits in 3 1/3 innings with Triple-A Pawtucket. Boston, which has won just four of 13 games and is still without right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka, had hoped Wakefield would be able to rejoin the rotation later this week. Still dealing with a bad back
News: From The Sports Xchange: RHP Tim Wakefield told the Boston Herald he's considering getting a second cortisone shot for his back after the sciatic nerve has begun bothering him. The 43-year-old knuckleballer said he is having trouble running on a left half that has given him problems since his sciatic nerve recently began hurting him. Wakefield had originally planned to throw off a mound in Florida during Boston's two-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, but he might be set back by the calf/sciatic issue. Wakefield was eligible to come off the 15-day DL on Aug. 2, but obviously isn't ready to pitch yet. "I woke up with a little pain, and the next thing I know I can't walk down the street," said Wakefield to the Herald. "When you saw me limping around in Texas, it was my hamstring killing me. I couldn't walk more than 20 feet without it bothering me." [...]
Red Sox | Wakefield still hurting
John Tomase, of the Boston Herald, reports Boston Red Sox SP Tim Wakefield (back, calf) is considering receiving a second cortisone shot to fix a sciatic problem that has spread to his left calf. However, he is still hoping he can throw off a mound sometime this week. "I'm just depressed that this isn't progressing the way I want it to progress," Wakefield said. "I'm throwing, playing catch. There are different symptoms now. I've got zero strength in my left calf due to the nerve. I'm just waiting for it to get better." Wakefield said his back is feeling fine but is unable to walk because his calf is completely shut down. Trainers have told him that under normal circumstances a person would need six to eight weeks to recover from the injury.
Wakefield may get another cortisone shot
The Boston Globe is reporting that Tim Wakefield is expected to receive another cortisone shot in his injured back. Wakefield is still suffering from a sciatic nerve problem, and he could be out for a significant amount of time if the injury doesn't improve.
Our View: Wakefield said that the injury has spread to his calf, and that he is unable to walk comfortably due to the pain. This sounds bad, but the cortisone shot should help the pain a bit. Wakefield owners should stay updated on his status, but right now it looks like you will be without for a while longer.
