He doesn't plan on another six-week disabled-list stint, something that happened last time when the back problem turned into a nerve issue that caused weakness in his left leg. "We'll go from there and see if it takes, and if so, I'll be pitching in a week or so and be back," said Wakefield. Though Wakefield pitched seven terrific innings (one run) in his first start back on Aug. 26, he realized quickly that something might be awry with his back again. "I felt it during the game, like in the third inning," said Wakefield. For the short term -- as in the rest of the season -- the 43-year-old Wakefield hopes that the shot will do the trick.

According to the Twitter page of Red Sox's beat writer Amalie Benjamin, starter Tim Wakefield is planning to get a cortisone shot in his back on Monday. Wakefield is hoping he can resume throwing by Wednesday.
Our View: Wakefield has struggled to walk over the last few days, so hopefully the shot will help him significantly. The team doesn't know when he will be able to start again, and fantasy owners shouldn't be relying on him down the stretch. He should be able to come back, but his injury looks like something that could linger all season.

Our View: The 43-year-old knuckle-baller has been a pleasant surprise this season, as he was 11-3 with a 4.31 ERA over 17 starts prior to going down. He should be fine to pencil into fantasy lineups upon his return to Boston.

However, he is still hoping he can throw off a mound sometime this week. "I'm just depressed that this isn't progressing the way I want it to progress," Wakefield said. "I'm throwing, playing catch. There are different symptoms now. I've got zero strength in my left calf due to the nerve. I'm just waiting for it to get better." Wakefield said his back is feeling fine but is unable to walk because his calf is completely shut down. Trainers have told him that under normal circumstances a person would need six to eight weeks to recover from the injury.
