Scott Kazmir looked solid in his first start since coming off his month-long DL stint with a strained right quadriceps, picking up a no decision after giving up two runs off four hits and one walk with five strikeouts in five innings.
Our View: Don't even bother looking at Kazmir's ERA or WHIP the rest of the year, as he was literally too awful over the first month and a half to ever make up for the discrepancy this season. Still, he's been a very effective starter the previous three seasons and remains one of the most talented young lefties in the league, so there's every reason to believe he'll be a fine fantasy starter going forward as long as he stays healthy.

He threw 61 of his 92 pitches for strikes, walked one and struck out five, including Chris Coghlan three times. The first inning has been a problem for the left-hander, and he fell behind quickly again this time with the Marlins taking a 1-0 lead without getting a hit. Carroll's third homer of the season made it 2-0 in the third. Fifteen of the 30 walks Kazmir has allowed this year have come in the first inning, and the 25-year-old has trailed after one inning in his each of his four losses. Scott Kazmir struck out five over five innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits and a walk in his return to the rotation on Saturday against the Marlins, but took a no-decision.
Analysis: Kazmir looked pretty sharp on Saturday, despite missing 32 games with a strained right quadriceps, giving owners (and Rays fans) hope that he might be putting his early struggles behind him. In his first nine starts, Kazmir walked 29 batters in 45 2/3 innings and allowed 39 runs and 60 hits, and his 7.69 ERA was among the worst in baseball at the time of his injury. He was more assertive and in-command on Saturday, working quickly and fairly efficiently. The Rays -- and many fantasy owners -- are counting on Kazmir to return to the dominant, K-compiling form that made him an ace in both the American League and fantasy leagues over the last two seasons. While this was only a five-inning no-decision against a middling offense, it was also clearly a step in the right direction. He'll look to build on this in his next start, in Texas on July 3.

Nate McLouth left Friday's game in the bottom of the eighth inning after suffering a left hamstring strain. The injury came while McLouth ran to first base on a bunt attempt. He explained there wasn't a great deal of pain after the initial sensation, and he doesn't expect to miss much time. "It almost felt like a bad cramp," McLouth said. "I shouldn't miss more than one or two days at the most." There's no word on who's expected to replace McLouth, but Gregor Blanco pinch-ran for him and then replaced him in center field. Considering McLouth is expected to miss only one or two games, weekly leaguers should still feel comfortable leaving him active for the week beginning June 29.

Our View: Kazmir will have at least one more rehab outing before rejoining the Rays. He was grossly ineffective through his first nine starts of the season, but he still has the potential to make a significant fantasy impact. Once he learns how to be a more efficient pitcher, he could begin to dominate.

Kazmir has been on the DL since May 22, retroactive to May 21, with a right quadriceps strain. Manager Joe Maddon said Kazmir will throw 65 pitches, but with a few caveats. "If he gets through four innings and has a relatively low number of pitches, we'll let him go out for the fifth," Maddon said. "And if he gets to a certain number, we'll let him finish up in the bullpen." What Maddon wants out of Kazmir is that he feels good physically and regains his fastball command, which will allow him to pound the strike zone whenever he wants.

Our View: Kazmir has been working on his mechanics as much as he is trying to get his arm into shape, and he is expected to spend a decent amount of time on his rehab assignment in the minors. If he gets healthy and gets the kinks figured out, he could be worth a hard look in all leagues. It would probably be wise to monitor his progression in the minors for the next few weeks.
