Updating previous reports, The Associated Press reports the Seattle Mariners signed free-agent IF Russell Branyan (Brewers) to a one-year deal worth $1.4 million Wednesday, Dec. 3. He could also make $500,000 in performance bonuses, which start at $250,000 for 200 plate appearances.

New Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik apparently liked what he saw in Branyan during their time this past season in Milwaukee. What Branyan lacks in glovework, he makes up for with an underrated power stroke. He owns a career slugging percentage of .485, but hasn't collected more than 315 at-bats in any one of his 11 big league seasons. That could change in Seattle, where playing time is ripe for the taking, especially at first base and DH. If Branyan seizes the opportunity, he could emerge as the Ryan Ludwick of 2009.

The Seattle Mariners have signed Russell Branyan to a one-year contract, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.Branyan is a spare part and has little to no fantasy relevance. He's known for his power, but that comes with a price - strikeouts, and a ton of them. In 2,000 career at-bats, he's struck out 797 times - or 40 percent of his ABs.
