Ryan Divish, of The Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Mariners 1B Russell Branyan (back) is unlikely to start another game at first base before the end of the season. However, manager Don Wakamatsu has not given up hope that Branyan will receive at least a few more at bats before the end of the season. "We would like him to be back for what he's done, to get at least a day in the lineup, but we're not going to force that," Wakamatsu said.

CBSSports.com reports the Seattle Mariners activated 1B Russell Branyan (back) from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, Sept. 29.

I would say I'm probably between 80 and 85 percent right now, and if I pushed it to come back and tweaked something again, I would go into the offseason having to go through the whole [rehab] process again." On Tuesday, Wakamatsu said the pain that had spread to Branyan's hip area had subsided, which is a good sign, and the team held out hope for one last go-round. "We'll let him hit a little bit," Wakamatsu said. "With the lack of time and him not able to take ground balls yet, [we'll see] maybe the last day or two if he'll get an at-bat or not."

Branyan missed his 27th consecutive game on Sunday, as a herniated disk in his back hasn't improved to the degree necessary for him to safely take the field. "I would say I'm probably between 80 and 85 percent right now and if I pushed it to come back and tweaked something again, I would go into the offseason having to go through the whole [rehab] process again." Although the hulking first baseman took pregame batting practice and swung the bat well on Sunday, he was too sore on Sept. 25 to take grounders at first base. He also hasn't been able to run full speed. Even if Branyan missed the rest of the year, he's already had a fulfilling campaign by establishing career highs in home runs (31), RBIs (76) and runs (64). The Mariners have had a litany of players man first base in Branyan's absence, including Jose Lopez, Mike Carp and Jack Hannahan.

Once I am ready to swing the bat, I think it will go pretty quick." Branyan, who has a career-high 31 home runs and 76 RBIs this season, has been sidelined since Aug. 29 with a herniated disk in his back. He has missed 16 games so far and figures to miss all six games of this homestand against the White Sox and Yankees and probably two games in Tampa Bay before the team travels to Toronto for a four-game series. Manager Don Wakamatsu had said last week that he hoped Branyan could begin baseball-related workouts on Tuesday, but that has been pushed back. "Russell is making progress, but he's still a couple days away, at least," Wakamatsu said. "We'll see how this week goes and maybe he'll be able to play then."
