The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Rich Harden has likely pitched his last game in a Cubs' uniform. Harden has said he would like to re-sign with the club, but the Cubs don't appear to have any interest in bringing him back.

Our View: Lou Pinella discussed the 2010 rotation with the media, and Harden's name was not even mentioned as a candidate. The team has plenty of starting pitching, and the oft-injured Harden is probably not worth the headache for them moving forward.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have officially shut down starter Rich Harden for the rest of the regular season.

Our View: Harden insists he's healthy, but he's just not interested in pitching. Manager Lou Piniella said. "He doesn't want to pitch, and we respect his wishes." Whereas Harden followed up with, "It was kind of a mutual decision. It'd be a lot different if we were in it and they needed me to pitch. I'd be out there in a second and I'd be fine. I'm still healthy, feeling good and took that as a positive for this season." He's saying his arm is fatigued, but it sounds like he just doens't want to pitch anymore. As a free agent at the end of the season, his tenure with the Cubs is likely finished.

Harden, who has some fatigue in his right arm, made 26 starts and went 9-9 with a 4.09 ERA. "At this point, it would be a lot different if we were in it and they needed me to pitch," Harden said. "I'm still healthy and feeling good. I take that as a positive for the season." The injury-prone 27-year-old totaled 141 innings, after reaching 148 with Oakland and the Cubs in 2008. A free agent after this season, Harden also said he wouldn't mind coming back to the Cubs. "I really enjoyed pitching in Chicago," Harden said. "It's the best thing I did -- best thing to happen to me coming over in the trade [from Oakland in 2008]. It was a good fit for me."

Harden has been comparatively healthy by his standards this year, but Piniella ruled him out for a start this weekend, and time is running out on the 2009 campaign. Harden said if the Cubs were still competing for a postseason spot, there'd be no discussion regarding whether he'd be starting or not, but with the team out of the chase, the Cubs may opt to audition some young starters down the stretch instead of pushing their luck with Harden.

Our View: Manager Lou Piniella says that Harden may be bypassed a second time as well. He lasted just three innings against the Brewers on Wednesday and has not pitched well as of late. Physically he's fine, so Sweet Lou obviously isn't thrilled with the way he's throwing and he's riding the pine as a result.

Harden (9-9) has forced the Cubs to go to the bullpen early and often because of his high pitch counts, and this was the fourth consecutive start in which he failed to go beyond five innings. "He wasn't sharp at all," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said.The electric right-hander has not been able to harness his command at all lately, which inevitably leads to high pitch counts and early exits. Harden will try to make it deeper into the game his next time out on Sept. 21 against the Brewers.
