Dodgers manager Joe Torre wanted to give closer Jonathan Broxton the night off after the right-hander issued three walks one day earlier. The move paid off, as Troncoso flirted with disaster but ultimately managed to preserve a 2-1 lead while striking out three. That said, the two walks are also a reminder not to place much stock in Troncoso's ability to maintain his 1.95 ERA. The righty reliever sports a 21/10 K/BB ratio.

News: Ramon Troncoso wriggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth, saving the Dodgers' 2-1 victory over the Cubs on Thursday night for their fourth straight win. Troncoso came on in the eighth inning after starter Randy Wolf gave up a leadoff homer to Bobby Scales. Troncoso gave up two hits in the eighth but got out of the inning with help from a double play grounder. Troncoso pitched the ninth after Torre let him bat in the top of the inning. He gave up a leadoff infield hit to Milton Bradley and a single to Derrek Lee. The runners advanced on a groundout. Geovany Soto was intentionally walked to face Scales, who homered leading off the eighth to end Wolf's night. Troncoso struck him out. [...]
