News: Mets pitchers Johan Santana and Oliver Perez are scheduled for season-ending surgery Tuesday. Santana will have bone chips removed from his left elbow. Perez is to have scar tissue extracted from the patella tendon of his right knee. The injury-depleted Mets say both pitchers should be ready for spring training. Santana, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, went 13-9 with a 3.13 ERA in 25 starts this year. Perez, slowed by his sore knee, was a bust in the first season of a $36 million, three-year contract. He finished 3-4 with a 6.82 ERA in 14 starts. Both operations will be performed by Altchek and Mets physician Dr. Struan Coleman. [...]

Our View: Perez will miss the remainder of the 2009 campaign, but is expected to be ready for spring training, if he doesn't suffer any setbacks in his recovery. The erratic hurler has two years left on his contract with New York, at $12MM per season.

Lance Broadway has been called up to replace the injured Oliver Perez on the roster, according to the Twitter page of Newsday's David Lennon. Broadway has been working as a starter with the team's Triple-A club in Buffalo.

Our View: Broadway was 5-7 with a 6.27 ERA in his 84.2 innings with Buffalo, so there is no reason to think he will be able to be successful at the major league level this season. He had been working as a long reliever with the White Sox earlier this season, and he should be in trouble regardless of which role he serves in New York.

Our View: This is starting to get unbelievable. It is dangerous to put a Mets' uniform on these days, and pretty soon they are going to run out of players. Perez was struggling while he was healthy, but he was still a better option than whoever will take his spot.

Mets transferred LHP Oliver Perez to the 60-day disabled list. Perez underwent successful knee surgery at the beginning of September and is expected to be at full strength by the start of spring training next season. He finished 2009 with a 3-4 record, 6.82 ERA and 1.92 WHIP.
