Analysis: Perez pitched well on Sunday for Class A Brooklyn, allowing two hits in five shutout innings, but it is still undecided when Perez will rejoin the Mets. Perez was horrid in brief action with the Mets this season, as his 9.97 ERA and 2.26 WHIP in 21 2/3 innings attest, and the Mets are not likely to rush him back. Fantasy owners know well that Perez's considerable potential as a fantasy starter -- pegged mostly to his strikeout skills -- is matched by his potential as an unsurpassed egg-laying fantasy vexation. He's a long way from being relevant in any format. Tim Redding will likely be the odd man out in the rotation upon Perez's return.

Oliver Perez is likely to serve as a reliever when he is activated from the disabled list, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Perez has made only one relief appearance in 180 career games. But after receiving a a three year $36 million contract this past offseason, Perez was awful for the Mets before being sent to the DL on May 3, going 1-2 with a and 9.97 ERA and 2.26 WHIP in 21.2 innings. So apparently even with all the injuries suffered by the Mets rotation in 2009, the team's brass doesn't trust their $36 million man as a starter. This probably won't be the case all season, but Perez won't be helping your team much right now if you have him on your roster.

Our View: Perez is rehabbing from not only patella tendinitis, but control issues and mechanical flaws as well. He has been on the DL since May 7th, but has been making recent progress at the team's extended spring training complex. Perez, on the DL since May 7, threw 48 pitches in three shutout innings of an extended spring training game Thursday at the Mets' rehab facility. He gave up three hits and one walk, and struck out five in the pain-free performance that came after a recent setback. "I felt really good," said Perez, whose fastball was clocked in the low 90s. "I'm a little tired because it's hot, but I feel strong. I threw three innings, and I was using all my pitches. I used my slider, backdoor, in good situations, behind the count, my changeup, too. I'm happy I had good command, and I was throwing a lot of strikes." Rehab coordinator Guy Conti said Perez is now on a five-day cycle. He will pitch again Tuesday, though it is uncertain whether that will come in another extended spring training game or in a minor league appearance. "His knee is really strong," Conti said. Our View: Perez apparently looked excellent in his outing today, but he shouldn't be expected to return any time soon. He still has a long way to go, but this is a step in the right direction. He may be worth a look when he does return, but only in the deepest of leagues.

Status: D.L.. Out for the season
Mets transferred LHP Oliver Perez to the 60-day disabled list. Perez underwent successful knee surgery at the beginning of September and is expected to be at full strength by the start of spring training next season. He finished 2009 with a 3-4 record, 6.82 ERA and 1.92 WHIP.
