Owings (6-11) threw 66 pitches over just three innings and allowed two runs on three hits and four walks before leaving due to shoulder tightness. "As the game went on, it got stiffer and stiffer and tighter," he said. "I was missing some pitches by a foot and a half. Off nights happen to everyone, but Owings has always been an iffy proposition outside of the deepest NL-only leagues, and his 1.62 WHIP and 59/50 K/BB ratio in 99 1/3 innings aren't terribly inspiring indicators that he's about to turn things around. Micah Owings struck out six over 6 2/3 against St. Louis on Saturday, and allowed just two earned runs on six hits and a pair of walks en route to his sixth win.

Analysis: It doesn't show up in the fantasy standings, but Owings' bat continues to be a big boon to his pitching fortunes -- he launched his third homer of the season in the second inning, giving himself a lead he never gave back. Offense aside, though, this was an excellent outing for Owings. His 1.53 WHIP is an indication of his iffy fantasy utility, as he's allowed a ton of baserunners thanks to both his hittability -- 94 hits allowed in 90 innings -- and an unimposing K/BB ratio of 56/44. He followed up a solid June in which he posted a 3.71 ERA and 2-2 record with some nice work here, though, and is worth a look in NL-only leagues if the match-up is right. He faces the Phillies in Philadelphia -- which does not initially appear to be "the right match-up" -- on July 9.
