The rookie has suffered through the first-year jitters that typically plague hitters not named Evan Longoria. He hadn't recorded a hit over 16 at-bats in his previous six games, and Sunday's multi-hit effort was just the second of his 14-game career. His playing time in the immediate future should remain solid, though, as manager Ken Macha has confirmed Gamel would stay with the team at least through the next phase of Interleague play, slated to end June 23-25.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting that Mat Gamel is in the Brewers' lineup Sunday. Gamel will hit sixth and play third base.

Our View: Gamel hasn't torn up the league so far in 2009, but he is still worth a look if he can get in the lineup on a regular basis. We know he can hit, but it seems like he would benefit from playing every day. If you have him, get him in today.

After batting .336 with eight homers and 31 RBIs on the farm, Gamel will arrive from Nashville in time for Thursday's series finale, and he will be used similarly to Prince Fielder when Fielder made his Major League debut in 2005. The Brewers play their first Interleague series in Minnesota on May 22-24, and Gamel could serve as the designated hitter. Until then, he probably will be limited to pinch-hit duties. "He may get a start -- we'll see," said Brewers manager Ken Macha, who paused when asked if he felt comfortable with playing Gamel at third base. "He's had some errors down there, [eight] errors. I thought in Spring Training he wasn't really terrible out there." Gamel has big-time offensive potential, and it wouldn't be surprising if he pushed aside Bill Hall for the starting job at third.

Mat Gamel will miss six weeks with a with latissimus dorsi tear in his right shoulder. There it is. Gamel was already doubtful to start the season with the big club, so at least the pressure is off now. Still, it has to be frustrating to have shoulder problems in consecutive spring trainings. When Gamel is ready to return to action, he will likely start his season at Triple-A.
