News: The Indians acquired versatile infielder Mark DeRosa to play third base on Wednesday, trading three minor leaguers to the Cubs. They dealt pitchers Jeff Stevens, Chris Archer and John Gaub for DeRosa, who played six different positions for the NL Central champions. In Cleveland, he'll be the club's everyday third baseman and fill in occasionally in the outfield. "We're going to take advantage of his versatility," Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. Indians acquired infielder Mark DeRosa from the Cubs for RHP Jeff Stevens, RHP Chris Archer and LHP John Gaub. It figured that DeRosa would appeal to a bunch of teams if the Cubs were making him available, but the Indians were able to pick him up without surrending one of their top 10 prospects. [...]

Source (mlb.com) (2B - chn) | 0 comments.

Though DeRosa has played primarily second base throughout his career, Cleveland will probably move him to third to keep its middle infield of Asdrubal Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta intact. Manning third base is nothing new for DeRosa, who played 22 games there last season and 37 back in '07, so don't expect the shift to disrupt him at the plate. Offensively, owners can expect DeRosa's production to drop from the career year (.285 AVG, 21 HR, 87 RBIs) he delivered in '08, especially without the likes of Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez protecting him. Look for his numbers to drop across the board, especially in the power department. Relying on him as your everyday second baseman would be a mistake. Flexibility is his one true calling card.

Source (fanball.com) (2B - chn) | 0 comments.

Updating a previous report, the Cleveland Indians completed a trade for Cubs infielder Mark DeRosa, ESPN.com reports.DeRosa was rumored to be involved in a deal for San Diego ace Jake Peavy. In exchange for DeRosa, the Cubs will receive three players, the names of which have yet to be disclosed. The Indians figure to utilize the versatility DeRosa displayed while in Chicago, where he split time between the outfield and infield. DeRosa's role with the Tribe will likely be defined by the performance of newly acquired second baseman Luis Valbuena. Should Valbuena prove inconsistent, Asdrubal Cabrera would become the everyday player at that position, which would leave DeRosa to settle in at third base, next to Jhonny Peralta.
