DeRosa is on some kind of power surge, as heÂ’s clubbed homers in three consecutive games and laced six in the last eight contests. The veteran journeymanÂ’s move back to the NL has clearly buoyed him, as heÂ’s three jacks away from establishing a new career high in homers.

Our View: The new-look Cardinal lineup was clicking on all cylinders tonight, and DeRosa is starting to look like a great acquisition by the team. If he continues to hit, the Cards are going to be tough to beat going forward.

Todd sent to CLE to complete DeRosa deal
Top Cardinals prospect Jess Todd has been revealed as the "player to be named later" in the Cardinals/Indians Mark DeRosa deal, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Our View: He has been added to the Indians 40-man roster, and will report to Triple-A Columbus. Todd was 4-2 with a 2.20 ERA and 24 saves for Triple-A Memphis so far this season. In 1.2 major league innings in 2009, he surrendered two earned runs.

DeRosa has returned from the break looking rested and ready to go, having blasted four homers in his nine second-half contests, helping him post an eye-popping .719 slugging percentage in July. You won't find too many keystones with the kind of pop that DeRosa offers up the middle.
DeRosa homers against Phillies
News: Cardinals 2B Mark DeRosa homered on Sunday in a loss to the Phillies. DeRosa went 2 for 4 in the loss as his solo homer in the 5th inning was not enough for St. Louis. He's hitting .244 on the season and now has four homers with the Cardinals and 17 total for the season. [...]
Garko could be next on trade block
According to a report at MLB.com, Indians' first baseman Ryan Garko may be the next member of the team to get shipped in a trade. Garko is arbitration-eligible after this season, and the Indians don't want to give him a pay raise since they have other options at first base.
Our View: The team has already shipped Mark DeRosa and Rafael Betancourt, and Garko looks like a good candidate to be next. He is starting to play more, but with Victor Martinez seeing time at first and with top prospect Matt LaPorta seeing time at first in the minors, it looks like Garko will be expendable. We will update any movement by the Indians and Garko leading up to the deadline.

Mark DeRosa hit his third home run in two games on Wednesday night, but again in a losing effort, as the Cardinals blew a ninth inning lead and lost to Houston 4-3.

DeRosa goes deep twice, but Cards fall
Mark DeRosa hit his first two Cardinal home runs on Tuesday night, but the Astros easily beat the Birds on Bat, winning 11-6 in Houston.
Our View: DeRosa's miserable time as a Cardinal is finally coming to an end. After going zero for his first 15 as a Redbird, and spending time on the disabled list, he is now four for his last eight, including the two round trippers. His wrist does not appear to be a problem, and he should be safe to start down the stretch.

News: The St. Louis Cardinals activated utility man Mark DeRosa from the 15-day disabled list Saturday. DeRosa, who was acquired June 27 from the Cleveland Indians, was in the Cardinals' lineup for three games before hurting his left wrist against San Francisco June 30. The injury was later diagnosed as a partially torn tendon sheath. He was in the starting lineup Saturday, batting second and playing third base. To make room for him, the Cardinals optioned second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir to Triple-A Memphis. DeRosa went 0 for 4 in the game against the Diamondbacks. [...]

DeRosa activated, starting Saturday night
Mark DeRosa (left wrist) has been activated from the disabled list, and will bat second and play third base for the Cardinals on Saturday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold.
Our View: There has been much uncertainty about just how serious DeRosa's injury was, but he's apparently fully recovered the partial wrist tendon tear he suffered on June 30. He is 0-for-9 so far during his short Cardinals career, but is a good option in most formats because of his position versatility and consistent run production.

DeRosa may have surgery after season
News: MLB.com reports that Mark DeRosa is getting closer to his return to the lineup but his injured wrist will likely require surgery after the season. DeRosa said on Friday that he was close to returning as long as his batting sessions went well. "I'm hoping today it feels great, and then we have a decision to make," DeRosa said. "It's basically at a point where if you can play with it, play. You're not going to damage it any further, so I want to see [how it feels]." [...]
DeRosa, who was injured while swinging on June 30 just three
DeRosa, who was injured while swinging on June 30 just three games after being traded from the Cleveland Indians, took a full round of batting practice on the field Friday at Busch Stadium and reported no ill effects afterward. The right-handed-hitting DeRosa had said earlier in the afternoon that he was close to returning as long as his batting practice session went well. DeRosa met with manager Tony La Russa after batting practice, and it's possible that he could return as soon as Saturday. He was 0-for-9 in three games with the Cardinals before going down.

DeRosa takes pain-free BP session
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals' third baseman Mark DeRosa took a full batting practice session on Friday and felt no pain. DeRosa said he wants to lobby manager Tony La Russa to activate and start him on Saturday.
Our View: This is great news for the Cardinals. Although it remains to be seen what La Russa will do with him, it sounds like DeRosa is ready to go. Don't be shocked if the team waits until next week to activate him, but check back as we will update his status as the news is released.

Cardinals | DeRosa could return this weekend
St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss posted on his Twitter page that St. Louis Cardinals 3B Mark DeRosa (wrist) could be activated from the disabled list as early as this weekend. However, it is more likely that he will return next week. DeRosa swung the bat without experiencing pain Thursday, July 16, and will take batting practice Friday, July 17.
DeRosa could be activated sooner than expected
Mark DeRosa could now possibly be activated as early as this weekend, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Our View: Next week is apparently still more likely, but DeRosa swung without pain in his injured right wrist on Thursday and is scheduled to take normal batting practice on Friday. Even if he is activated this weekend, you may want to wait until next week to start him, when he should have shed some of the rust from sitting out, in leagues with daily transactions.

Cards talking to A's about Holliday?
Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the St. Louis Cardinals are talking to the Oakland A's about the possibility of acquiring outfielder Matt Holliday. The Cardinals have been linked to Holliday for much of the season.
Our View: Rogers didn't give much information other than the fact that the Cardinals are discussing Holliday, so take this for what it is worth. After making a trade for Mark DeRosa already, it seems unlikely the Cards will pull off another trade unless they can get Holliday for a reasonable deal. We will keep you updated if anything else surfaces.

Probable DeRosa return 7-10 days away
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports that a "realistic projection" for Mark DeRosa's return is between July 22 and July 28.
Our View: This is of course barring any setbacks in his recovery from a torn wrist tendon sheath. Don't plan on having him full strength until the end of the month, and even then you shouldn't expect the same high level of production he was producing at before the injury. Wrist injuries usually take a long time to recover from, and it's likely he won't be hitting as well as before the injury.
Indians | Evaluating Cards' PTBN

Cardinals | DeRosa has partial tear
Updating previous reports, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports St. Louis Cardinals 3B Mark DeRosa (wrist) had an MRI reveal a partially torn tendon sheath near his left wrist. DeRosa isn't allowed to swing a bat, but the team is very optimistic that he'll return shortly after the All-Star break. "I don't see (surgery) on the radar at this time," general manager John Mozeliak said. "We're going to give him seven to 10 days to let it calm down, then re-evaluate the situation. But this is a partial, not a complete tear."

The Cardinals optioned infielder Tyler Greene to Triple-A Memphis on Monday and recalled third baseman Brian Barden.
Analysis: DeRosa was initially led to believe the injury wasn't serious when he hurt himself on June 30, but an MRI taken Monday prompted the team to be a little more cautious with his recovery timetable. This news has to be frustrating for owners, but the DL stint was at least backdated a few days, which means the versatile veteran will be eligible to return in approximately a week. In corresponding moves, the Cardinals recalled Brian Barden and Nick Stavinoha from Triple-A Memphis.

DeRosa injury sounding worse
The Cardinals have revealed more about Mark DeRosa's murky wrist injury, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The team is now saying the utilityman is suffering from a "torn tendon sheath" in his left wrist. Speculation is that he might not be able to return until August.
Our View: This is very bad news for the Cardinals. The team is still saying he could return right after the All-Star break, but that isn't appearing too likely right now. Hold onto him if you are thin at third base or in the outfield, but you may want to begin exploring more longer-term options to replace his solid fantasy production in 2009.

Infielder Mark DeRosa was diagnosed with a strained tendon in his left wrist Wednesday and was told he will only miss a few days.
Analysis: DeRosa, who injured the wrist while swinging the bat during Tuesday night's game against the Giants, wasn't very optimistic afterward but got the positive news when X-rays taken Wednesday morning came back negative. "It's a huge relief," DeRosa said. "Last night back at the hotel I was a little scared. When you hear a pop and when it's in one of those small tendons and joints and stuff like that, you never know." The newly acquired Cardinal is 0-for-9 in three games since joining the team Sunday from the Cleveland Indians. He said he was available to play defense and could pinch-run if needed. DeRosa hopes that continued treatment from the Cardinals medical staff will allow him to return to the lineup in a couple of days. Needless to say this is a relief for all owners who have the versatile veteran on their rosters.

The Cardinals optioned right-hander Clayton Mortensen to Triple-A Memphis Wednesday.
Analysis: Mortensen gave up two earned runs in three innings on Monday night. He wouldn't have been available for another day or two, so the club decided to call up infielder Jarrett Hoffpauir for some infield protection with the status of newly-aquired Mark DeRosa still unknown. DeRosa injured his wrist on a swing during Tuesday night's 6-3 loss to the Giants, and had to be removed from the game.

DeRosa day-to-day with strained wrist tendon
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Bernie Miklasz, Mark DeRosa is day-to-day after leaving Tuesday night's game against the Giants with a wrist injury.
Our View: Things aren't getting any easier for the Cardinals. In desperate need of offense, they will now likely have to go a few games without their recent big acquisition. Still, his injury was termed a "best case scenario" by Miklasz, who says it is just a strained tendon. Expect him to be back in a few days, with next week likely being the latest possible return.

After a couple of days of uncertainty, Gil Meche is ready to
After a couple of days of uncertainty, Gil Meche is ready to go for Wednesday afternoon's start against the Twins. After his last start, Meche was concerned about what was termed a "dead arm" feeling. Things were left hanging until after Meche threw in the bullpen on Monday from various distances and using all his pitches. He gave manager Trey Hillman and pitching coach Bob McClure the green light after the test. Meche has been roughed up in his last two starts, allowing a total of four homers and 13 earned runs in a pair of losses. The assumption seems to be that rocky stretch is behind him.
