The Los Angeles Times' Lance Pugmire reports no trace of HCG was found in Los Angeles Dodgers OF Manny Ramirez's system at the time of his drug test, according to three sources with knowledge of the results. It was a prescription for that drug that led to his suspension. One of the sources with knowledge of the test results confirmed that Ramirez's sample was flagged for having an unusually elevated synthetic testosterone level, more than four times that of the average male. Sources also said that MLB's decision to move to suspend Ramirez would have happened only if the report showed a banned substance. Anti-doping experts said the absence of HCG, coupled with the league's action, indicated that Ramirez used steroids. MLB officials had begun the process of disciplining Ramirez for a positive drug test when they obtained his medical records that contained a prescription for HCG. At that point he was suspended for "just cause" based on "non-analytical evidence" and for which a "therapeutic use" exemption was available but never requested. Once MLB had the prescription, Ramirez dropped the appeal and was suspended.

Baseball asked the World Anti-Doping Agency lab in Montreal to perform a carbon isotope ratio test, which determines whether testosterone is natural or synthetic, the Web site reported. MLB then asked Ramirez to produce medical records, as required under the drug agreement. Ramirez's test had a testosterone-epitestosterone ratio between 4:1 and 10:1, ESPN.com reported. Typically, a person naturally produces the hormones at a ratio of 1:1; tests of 4:1 or greater are flagged. Ramirez's side was prepared to argue to an arbitrator that the synthetic testosterone was caused by the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder taking the steroids precursor DHEA, ESPN.com and the Union-Tribune in San Diego reported Saturday. DHEA is not banned by MLB. A possible appeal was dropped before a scheduled Wednesday meeting after the medical records turned over included a prescription for the fertility drug HCG, or human chorionic gonadotrophin, ESPN.com reported. Some athletes who have used steroids have taken HCG to help restart natural testosterone production. Because HCG is banned by baseball, the sport based Ramirez's suspension on the use of that drug. Updating a previous report, Dylan Hernandez, of the Los Angeles Times, reports Los Angeles Dodgers OF Manny Ramirez (hamstring) asked for the day off Sunday, May 3, after experiencing tightness in his hamstring. However, Ramirez said his hamstring tightness is not a serious problem.
