Manny collects two hits
Manny Ramirez went 2-for-3 in the Dodgers 6-1 spring training loss to the Chicago White Sox.
Our View: All he's doing now is hitting .533 during the spring, and he has gone five for his last six. Ramirez did not play in the field during the game, giving his hamstrings a rest as the DH.
Ramirez was moved from fourth to third in the lineup Aug. 28
Ramirez was moved from fourth to third in the lineup Aug. 28 and stayed there through the successful stretch run and the postseason. Torre indicated the cleanup hitter protecting Ramirez might vary depending on whether the opposing starting pitcher is right- or left-handed. Last year against left-handed pitching, Torre batted right-handed-hitting Russell Martin fourth after Jeff Kent was injured. This spring against right-handed pitching, Torre has usually used left-handed-hitting Andre Ethier at cleanup.

News: Royals starter Gil Meche worked seven scoreless innings and allowed four hits - three singles to Manny Ramirez Ramirez - as the Royals beat the Dodgers 4-1 Friday. Showing no signs of the hamstring tightness that cost him all of last week, Ramirez singled to center in the first, fourth and sixth innings before leaving for a pinch runner. "You always have (the injury) on your mind, but it seems to be OK now," Ramirez said. "I was just going. When you can fly like me. I still think the (left) leg is a little behind but I think maybe three or four days everything will be normal. I haven't (charged a ball) in a game, so that was great. [...]
Manny 3-for-3
Manny Ramirez was 3-for-3 with three singles on Friday. He's now hitting .500 in limited action this spring.
Our View: The biggest news here is that Manny played left field. The fact that he isn't DHing means that his bum hammy is recovering, and he can truly start tuning up for the regular season. He remains a top fantasy outfielder.

News: Manny Ramirez was back in left field for the Dodgers and quickly tested his sore left hamstring. Ramirez said he felt good running toward the left-field line to cut off a drive by Bill Hall in the second inning Wednesday against the Brewers. "I was just going to run hard and see." Ramirez had been kept from playing in the field since he aggravated his sore left hamstring chasing down a double against the Rockies on March 15, his only other game in left this spring. He missed six games before returning for two as the designated hitter. "Every time you hurt your hamstring, you always have that in the back of your mind. But I want to test it," Ramirez said. "Maybe I'm 50 percent, but who cares? It's a long season." [...]

Manny's hammy is fine
Manny Ramirez played outfield on Wednesday for the Dodgers and said that his ailing hamstring is doing well, according to MLB.com.
Our View: This is good news for the Dodgers slugger who now needs to get focused at the plate and back on track. His offense is what fantasy fans care about and hopefully he can put his leg problems behind him the rest of the spring.

He's been down longer than he wanted to be. He has no restrictions. You have to hope for the best." Dodgers manager Joe Torre said if Ramirez makes it through Tuesday night's game without any problems, he'll play the outfield Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. "He wants to try it and we're not going to know anything until we do it," Torre said. "If he goes out there, he can't worry about people saying, `Hey, he loafed after the ball' and stuff. We're going to encourage him to measure what he does. Let the ball go to the wall if you have to." [...]

News: Dodgers OF Manny Ramirez's first game back after a hamstring injury went just fine. Ramirez was the designated hitter Monday against the Angels, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. "I only hit (the ball) once, but it was good," said Ramirez, playing in his third spring game. "The main thing is I'm trying to get my leg healthy. It was pretty good for the first time in a while." Ramirez missed six spring games after he aggravated his sore left hamstring chasing down a double to left against the Rockies on March 15. Dodger manager Joe Torre said it was a mistake to put Manny

"I don't think he needs to play left field in every game he plays, no question," Torre said. "And if I had it to do all over again, I would have DHed him a few more days." Ramirez agreed to a $45 million, two-year contract March 4 and played in his first game nine days later, singling and walking twice as a DH. Ramirez, who won't play again until the soreness is completely gone, took part in the hitting portion of Tuesday morning's workout. "He's frustrated, but he understands," Torre said. "I told him if he plays a week or 10 days of baseball games, you should be fine. It's bothering him because he wants to play. He feels well enough to. News: Manny Ramirez was surrounded by reporters in the Dodgers clubhouse after making his long-anticipated debut on Friday against the Rangers. "I was kind of nervous the first at-bat, Ramirez said, "especially when they are paying me $25 million to get base hits. I think that's not a good investment, but we'll see," Ramirez said. The crowd cheered loudly each time Ramirez walked to the plate. They booed just as loudly when Rangers starter Doug Mathis worked very carefully and off the plate. "I told him he hasn't lost any of his flair from last year," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "That's pretty impressive for spring training." Ramirez scored in the first when Andre Ethier and James Loney followed his walk with singles and was wiped out on a double-play grounder in the third and fifth. "I'm in spring training. Ramirez was scratched from Thursday's exhibition game against South Korea because of tightness in his left hamstring. Dodgers manager Joe Torre expected to use Ramirez as a DH against Texas on Friday. "He can stand out in left field," said Macha, who was a TV analyst covering the Red Sox the past two seasons before taking the Brewers job this offseason. Manny in Friday's lineup
According to MLB.com, Manny Ramirez is penciled in as the DH in Friday's contest and will hit third in the lineup. It will be his first spring action since signing a contract with the Dodgers.
Our View: It's nice to see Manny is going to get some at-bats, but he shouldn't need many to get ready for Opening Day. He seems to have an obvious on-off switch and can play at the highest level when he feels like it. As long as he's happy, he'll rake.

"If I'm going to steal bases and turn doubles into triples, I have to get on my horse," Ramirez said, smirking. Still, there's a long time before the Dodgers' April 6 opener at San Diego. Dodgers manager Joe Torre said he would refer to back copies
Dodgers manager Joe Torre said he would refer to back copies of media guides to determine a normal spring workload for Ramirez, and he will find that the slugger had only 34 at-bats last spring. But it was a strange spring for the Red Sox, who opened the regular season in Japan on March 25 and played their last Grapefruit League game on March 19. "I want to ask him what he thinks he needs," Torre said of Ramirez. "Usually it's anywhere from 50-75 [at-bats], in that area."
Manny Ramirez is scheduled to make his spring training debut
News: Manny Ramirez is scheduled to make his spring training debut Thursday when the Los Angeles Dodgers play South Korea's World Baseball Classic team. The exhibition game won't count in Cactus League standings, but Ramirez's return to the Dodgers after agreeing to a $45 million, two-year contract last week will make it a major attraction. Los Angeles manager Joe Torre said Tuesday he isn't sure if Ramirez will play the outfield or be the designated hitter, but the slugger will get a start on the 50 or so at-bats he's expected to receive before opening day. During a 6 a.m. meeting Wednesday at the Malibu beach house of Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, the sides reached a preliminary agreement on a $45 million, two-year contract that they made official later that day. "We all wanted the same thing and that's what was apparent to me," said Dodgers manager Joe Torre, who left spring training in Arizona with GM Ned Colletti to attend the session. "After last year and the time he spent with us, we knew we wanted him back. It was just a matter of finding that common ground," Torre said. "As Ned said, you talk on the phone and to different people, you need to get face-to-face. It was a real good meeting. There was a lot of comfortable conversation." Our View: This was essentially the same offer that was put on the table in November, and we suddenly feel like we have wasted a huge amount of effort to get to the same place we started from. Three and a half months and 100 or so notes from then until now and nothing changed. With the ability to opt out after the season, Manny is playing for a contract once agin in 2009. He will once again be among the best hitters in the game and all of the Dodgers will benefit from his presence in the lineup.

Manny Ramirez's four-month long negotiations with the Dodgers may have come to an end, with reports that the two sides have finally agreed upon a two-year, $45 million deal, although agent Scott Boras has denied that a deal has been made official, according to ESPN.Though it appears the contract drama is still not quite over, it does seem like Manny will re-sign with the Dodgers sooner rather than later. While he will turn 37 at the end of May, Manny is still one of the most feared hitters in the game and will provide excellent value, aside from speed, to any fantasy squad. His return would decrease the value of both Juan Pierre and Andre Ethier, and possibly Matt Kemp a bit as well, as there will be only two everyday spots for the three players.
