Analysis: Hernandez, 25 and a switch-hitter, played in 22 games and batted .204 (10-for-49) with two RBIs. He started 12 games at shortstop and one at third base. The choice to reduce the roster basically came down to Hernandez and shortstop Tony Pena Jr. Although Pena is batting just .091, the Royals consider him a better defensive shortstop than Hernandez. Both players were out of options.
