Lohse was bypassed on his Friday start in favor of John Smoltz so that he could work on his mechanics. A right forearm injury had caused him to lose command of his pitches. "We're excited about him because he's feeling healthy for the first time in awhile," manager Tony La Russa said. Lohse, who is 5-8 with a 4.83 ERA, is 1-4 with a 4.64 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in six career outings (five starts) at Minute Maid Park.

Our View: Lohse threw a successful bullpen session on Friday, so he will get another chance to go on Monday. He has had a nightmare of a season, ad it seems highly unlikely he will be able to put it together in time to start in the playoffs.

News: From The Sports Xchange: Kyle Lohse, who has had an assortment of injuries and also has had to deal with a family tragedy, has had renewed problems with his right forearm. Lohse, who had trouble finding a consistent release point on Saturday when he was cuffed around in his first start in three weeks, had an MRI Monday and some minor inflammation was found. Lohse was slated to pitch this weekend against the Cubs but probably will be skipped, with both Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright likely to face Chicago along with John Smoltz, who reported improvement in his right shoulder. Smoltz, who was skipped Monday because of recent tendinitis in the shoulder, said before the Cardinals beat Florida, "To beat a dead horse, I could have pitched today. (The shoulder) is progressing the way I thought two days ago I told you it would progress." [...]

Troy Glaus took live batting practice against Kyle Lohse on Tuesday at Busch Stadium, according to Cardinals' beat writer Matthew Leach. Glaus struck out in his first at-bat of the day.

Our View: Glaus could see some at-bats in the next month for the Cards, but it sounds like he may be a little rusty. With the team having a comfortable lead in the division, expect guys like Mark DeRosa to get some time off over the next month, thus opening up some possibly playing time for Glaus, among others. We don't expect him to do much this season, however.
