Kyle Lohse (forearm) threw a pain-free bullpen session Monday
Kyle Lohse (forearm) threw a pain-free bullpen session Monday and is set to make a rehab start Thursday for Double-A Springfield.
Analysis: Sidelined with a strained forearm flexor since leaving a start early on June 3, Lohse will be evaluated after Thursday's outing. If all goes according to plan, it's likely the righty's next start would be for the Cardinals sometime next week."We're going to do the smart thing and give him the one [rehab start] and evaluate it and see if he needs another one," manager Tony La Russa said. "We'll give him as much as he needs." Lohse is 4-4 with a 3.99 ERA in 10 starts in '09.
Lohse set for rehab start
The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that injured starter Kyle Lohse will throw a bullpen session on Monday to prepare for his Thursday rehab start in Double-A.
Our View: Lohse has been limited to just one start since May 23rd and the Cards desperately need his arm healthy and back in the rotation. His rehab has gone smoothly to this point and barring any setbacks he should rejoin the team just before or right after the All Star break.

Lohse throws 85 pitches
Kyle Lohse, who is recovering from a forearm strain, threw 85 pitches against live batters today at Busch Stadium, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Our View: He became tired near the end due to the heat, but did not have any issues with his forearm, and feels ready to start a rehab assignment.
Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse threw about 85 pitches counting
News: Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse threw about 85 pitches counting warmups in a simulated game Friday and left feeling ready for a rehab start that could be the last step before returning to the rotation. Barring a setback, the right-hander said he was set to pitch at Double-A Springfield in five or six days. He's been on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm flexor strain since June 4, an injury originally sustained when he was hit by a pitch when squaring to bunt on May 23. Lohse worked on his stamina in 93-degree heat and said there's been no pain in the forearm for nearly two weeks. "It felt good," Lohse said. "Obviously I got a little tired at the end, but I pushed through it and still made some pitches. That's what we were looking for." [...]

Analysis: The previous plan had been for Lohse to throw a fairly light session off a mound Thursday, then throw the simulated innings June 27. However, the 12:10 p.m. CT start of that day's game led to a change in plans. Also factored in was that everything has gone well for Lohse recently, and he's feeling just fine as he rehabilitates from his forearm strain. Lohse will throw approximately 60 pitches to his teammates, plus warmup tosses. The next steps would likely include a bullpen session June 28, followed by a Minor League rehabilitation assignment, perhaps on July 1. Lohse said he expects to pitch in the Minors somewhere before he is activated.

Lohse to skip bullpen, throw to hitters Friday
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals' starter Kyle Lohse is skipping his scheduled bullpen session on Thursday and instead throwing to hitters on Friday. Lohse is expected to do a game-like warm-up and then throw to hitters for two-to-three simulated innings.
Our View: Lohse skipping a bullpen session sounds bad, but in reality he is doing it because he was so encouraged by his last session. He may need a rehab start before returning, but for now it looks like he could be back in the Cards' rotation very soon.

Lohse bullpen session goes well
Kyle Lohse threw 40 pitches in a bullpen session on Sunday without complications, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Lohse is being targeted for a return during the Cards' four-game set vs. the Cubs at Wrigley Field July 10-12.

Lohse ready for bullpen session
According to Scout.com, Kyle Lohse is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Sunday in Kansas City.
Our View: Lohse is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm, but has been progressing nicely this week. If his bullpen session goes well on Sunday he would move on to a rehab assignment before coming off the DL and rejoining the team. His return would be a huge boost to a suddenly crippled Redbird rotation.

Two days after his first throw since the injury, Lohse played catch at a distance of 120 feet on Tuesday. He said he felt even better than in the previous throw, and that he exerted more effort on the longer throws as well. Lohse last pitched in a game on June 3, when he aggravated an existing forearm condition by diving to field a bunt. "We've still got a ways to go," Lohse said. "I haven't thrown for a while. You can't rush this kind of stuff. You don't want to re-aggravate it. I've got to make sure my shoulder is still strong from all the time off. I'm not putting any dates on it. We're trying to take it slow and [be] cautious and make sure we don't do anything that sets us back a couple more days."
Lohse takes step toward return to Cards
Kyle Lohse took another step forward in his rehabilitation from a right forearm strain on Tuesday, and a bullpen session is now at least in sight for the injured right-hander.
Lohse progessing nicely
Injured starter (right forearm strain) Kyle Lohse threw from 120 feet on Tuesday according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Our View: Lohse said that things have been going well during his recovery, and that if they keep at the current rate he will be back "sooner rather than later." This would be great news for a beleaguered Cardinals team. However, Lohse fantasy owners shouldn't be expecting miracles from him when he gets back.

Lohse called it a significant step just a few days after it was painful to force his pitching arm through a series of range-of-motion exercises.
Lohse begins throwing program
MLB.com is reporting that Cardinals' starter Kyle Lohse began a throwing program on Sunday. Lohse is recovering from a strained floxor muscle in his right forearm.
Our View: Lohse is still expected to be out so another month or so, but it is a very good sign that he has started throwing. The Cardinals won't rush him back, but if he keeps progressing he could be back sooner than expected.
Lohse progressing
Kyle Lohse is progressing in his recovery from a right forearm strain, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has advanced to range-of-motion exercises.
Our View: Lohse will be on the shelf for at least four weeks, and may even be out past the All-Star break. He should remain patiently stashed on fantasy rosters.

Cardinals could consider Glavine?
The Boston Globe suggests that the Cardinals could consider pursuing Tom Glavine with Kyle Lohse on the DL.
Our View: Glavine is considering hanging up his cleats after the Braves released him, but he also has the urge to continue pitching after working hard on rehabbing his left shoulder. Glavine would like to remain in the NL, but this news is purely speculation as of now.
Lohse strained his right forearm flexor on June 3 when he threw
Lohse strained his right forearm flexor on June 3 when he threw to first after fielding a bunt by the Reds' Johnny Cueto. He originally suffered the injury on May 23 when he was hit by a pitch, but aggravated the injury in the contest with Cincinnati. It's Lohse's first trip to the DL in his nine-year career. With infielder Joe Thurston expected to leave the club any day to be with his wife for the birth of their first child, the team gave the open roster spot to infielder Greene. The right-handed-hitting Greene was with the Cardinals for a short time earlier this season and hit .263 in 38 at-bats.

Cardinals right-hander Kyle Lohse is likely headed to the disabled list after leaving Wednesday's game with tightness in his right forearm according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Cardinals | Lohse leaves game early Wednesday
Matthew Leach, of MLB.com, reports St. Louis Cardinals SP Kyle Lohse (forearm) left the game early Wednesday, June 3, with a recurrence of right forearm discomfort. He had allowed two runs (one earned) with one strikeout in two-plus innings Wednesday.
Yes, this is the same forearm that had been giving Lohse trouble
Yes, this is the same forearm that had been giving Lohse trouble in recent weeks, and which led to two of his recent starts being pushed back. Blaine Boyer took his place in this game, but it's unclear yet whether or not Lohse will miss another start with his latest injury. Lohse's season has been ridiculously, improbably star-crossed thus far, as he has also been hit by a pitch on his left elbow, suffered a knee injury covering first base, dealt with back spasms and endured a nasty stomach bug on top of his irksome forearm. If he has to miss a start, the Cardinals will likely turn to Mitchell Boggs, who pitched effectively for St. Louis earlier in the season, notching a 3.22 ERA in four starts.
