Crossing our fingers on LohseFrom ESPN.com's Christopher Harris: Lohse pitched well again Thursday against the Mets, winning his third decision while allowing one earned run, one walk and eight hits in five innings. Unfortunately, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he "heard a pop" in his knee while covering first base in the fifth inning, and needed an MRI, so this analysis might be moot. But man, the dude is pitching well. Lohse went thoroughly undrafted in ESPN.com leagues despite the fact that Dave Duncan had already helped remake his approach in 2008, as Lohse went back to relying much more on his fastball and much less on his change. The result was that he became more of a groundball pitcher, which led to his fewest homers allowed in a season and a sub-4.00 ERA. Most importantly, his WHIP was "only" 1.30, the second-best mark of his career. News: Cardinals SP Kyle Lohse lasted just long enough for another win after jamming his right knee as the Cardinals completed a three-game sweep with a 12-8 victory over the Mets on Thursday. Lohse (3-0) is 11-2 in 21 starts at home the last two seasons although he barely qualified for this win. He escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth on Gary Sheffield's double-play ball and left with a 4-2 lead. Five relievers finished for the Cardinals. Lohse was hurt when he reached back to try to corral a grounder by Jose Reyes that Pujols booted at first for an error to start the fifth. Lohse didn't believe it was anything serious, although he underwent an MRI exam. "I was trying to stop and grab the ball and the brakes weren't working very well," Lohse said. Our View: Lohse is not a strikeout pitcher, but he knows how to get the job done, particularly against the NL's weaker lineups. He does the job well when expected to, but he can often be a poor play against strong offenses. Following today's performance, he is 2-0 with a 1.12 ERA. His to opponents have been the Pirates and Astros.
