Jim Caple, of ESPN.com, reports Minnesota Twins 1B Justin Morneau (back) will miss the remainder of the season with a stress fracture in his lower back. A CT scan Monday, Sept. 14, revealed the stress fracture in the L5 vertebrae in his lower back. Surgery won't be necessary, but Morneau will have to rest his back for three months. He'll be able to ride a bike and lift weights, but he'll have to avoid running and doing anything that puts pressure on his spine.

The good news is that surgery won't be required, and that Morneau will likely be good to go in three months. That said, the bad news is both obvious and devastating, for fantasy owners and Twins fans alike. Morneau had been playing with pain for some time, which explains his .077 (3-for-39) average in September, and he ends the season with a .274-30-100 line. Michael Cuddyer will take Morneau's place at first base going forward. Cuddyer's shift to the infield will likely break loose regular time in the outfield for Carlos Gomez and Delmon Young, although neither has really proven a worthy fantasy option this year.

Our View: This could explain Morneau's recent poor performance (.077 September average). He's scheduled to see a doctor on Monday, and is considered day-to-day for the time being, but there's no knowing how serious the injury is and how long he'll be out. We'll know more after he sees the doc tomorrow.

La Velle E. Neal III reports that Justin Morneau is recovering well from surgery on his right hand. "Hand is feeling better," Morneau wrote via e-mail. "Get the cast off this week and it should be good as new in about 4 weeks. They found a floating chunk of bone that kind of looked like a tooth but no tendon or ligament damage. Went as good as it could go." Morneau's hand should be healed by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the team expects the stress fracture in his lower back to heal with rest.
