Duchscherer scheduled for surgery
The Associated Press reports that Justin Duchscherer will undergo arthroscopic elbow surgery. He will likely miss the first two months of the season.
Our View: This is terrible news for Oakland, but don't tell us you didn't see it coming. The Duch was spot on last year with a 2.54 ERA in his first season as a starter. But the conversion from a set up role and the increase in innings seems to have taken a toll on his elbow.

Duchscherer couldn't even make it through an inning, and it's now virtually certain that he'll open the regular season on the disabled list. The A's had been holding out hope that they'd have Duchscherer ready to throw about 70 pitches by April 10, allowing him to start in Oakland's home opener. That assignment, general manager Billy Beane conceded, will now go to someone else.
Duchscherer leaves outing early
Justin Duchscherer pitched in a minor league game on Thursday but had to cut the outing short after experiencing elbow pain, according to the Associated Press.
Our View: "Needless to say, this is bad news," general manager Billy Beane said. "I can't say he'll definitely (start the season) on the DL, but it's certainly fair to say that it's likely under the circumstances." Duchscherer also stated that his arm felt worse and worse after every pitch. This situation is starting to look uglier and uglier as Opening Day approaches, and it looks like one of last year's brightest surprises will have a whole lot going against him in an attempt for a repeat performance in 2009.

Joe Stiglich, of The Oakland Tribune, reports Oakland Athletics SP Justin Duchscherer (elbow) was forced to cut short his outing Thursday, March 26, after he experienced more of the right elbow pain that has sabotaged his spring training. Stiglich speculates this latest setback all but guarantees Duchscherer starts the season on the disabled list. "He did not come out of it well," A's assistant general manager David Forst said. "He left the game with elbow soreness. We'll get together with the trainers and figure out what the next step is."
Athletics SP Justin Duchscherer is likely to begin the season
News: Athletics SP Justin Duchscherer is likely to begin the season on the disabled list after he left a minor-league game with elbow pain Thursday. Duchscherer was making his first appearance of the spring. He was scheduled to throw 35-40 pitches in a minor-league game on the A's off day, but he had to cut the outing short. "My arm still isn't right," Duchscherer told MLB.com. "I was fine warming up, but as soon as I started throwing at game speed, I knew I wasn't going to last long. It got worse on every pitch. I walked a guy and gave up two singles and a homer and just said, 'I can't pitch like this.' It's probably the most frustrated I've ever been since I started playing baseball." Assistant general manager David Forst, who was at the game at the A's minor league complex, said Duchscherer was clearly uncomfortable. "To the naked eye, it looked like it was bothering him on the last few pitches," Forst said. [...]

Duchscherer, who has yet to appear in a Cactus League game. said "Everything went great." Shut down for two days after the cortisone shot was administered, Duchscherer played long-toss twice last week, and his Thursday workout went so well that the A's pushed his schedule up a day or two. Duchscherer's recent inactivity rules him out of the rotation for at least the first five-man turn of the regular season, and maybe the second, but Oakland manager Bob Geren has downplayed the possibility of Duchscherer starting the season on the disabled list.

"I'm excited, because it's the first time I've thrown with some velocity without pain," said Duchscherer, who threw 25 pitches from a mound. "That's certainly a positive sign."
Our View: Duchscherer is still a week away from appearing in an exhibition game, but he did throw his pitches at about 90 percent velocity. It has been determined that he will not start the season in the rotation, but it's possible he could land in the bullpen as a way to build up his pitch count.

He played long toss (about 65 throws from 120 feet) and indicated that he no longer felt sharp elbow pain. He received a cortisone shot three days ago and said, "The shot seemed to help quite a bit. If I can get the pain in my elbow to go away completely, I do not think it will take that long to be game-ready."
Our View: Duchscherer can pitch like an ace for the A's when healthy, but his track record with injuries makes him a risky fantasy prospect.
Athletics SP Justin Duchscherer resumed throwing Tuesday after
News: Athletics SP Justin Duchscherer resumed throwing Tuesday after taking three days off following a cortisone injection in his sore elbow. Duchscherer made 24 throws at a distance of 120 feet at about 80 percent velocity. Duchscherer said he is hoping to throw again on Wednesday, and perhaps be ready to throw batting practice within a week or 10 days. Athletics | Duchscherer to miss start of season
Updating previous reports, Oakland Athletics SP Justin Duchscherer (elbow) had to stop playing long toss Saturday, March 14, due to persistent pain in his right elbow, according to The Associated Press. Duchscherer, who hasn't yet pitched in a Spring Training game, received a cortisone shot Saturday after feeling pain while playing long toss for the fifth consecutive day. "It just didn't feel good when I was throwing," said the two-time All-Star. "This is ridiculous." After the game, A's manager Bob Geren said Duchscherer's setback essentially rules out the possibility of him getting in enough work to be ready for the first week of the season.
Duchscherer to miss start of season
Starter Justin Duchscherer reported persistent pain in his troublesome elbow while playing long toss on Saturday and will miss the start of the season, according to the Associated Press. "When I got to 75-80 percent, it started hurting," Duchscherer said. "The more I threw, the worse it got. Instead of taking a few more days off, we're going to hit it hard with cortisone and take it from there."
Our View: Duchscherer said the setback will severely limit his chances of building up his pitch count, thus the projected timeline for his return.
Oakland Athletics starter Justin Duchscherer will miss the start
News: Oakland Athletics starter Justin Duchscherer will miss the start of the season because of a setback in his rehabilitation from an elbow injury. Duchscherer had to stop playing long toss on Saturday morning because of persistent pain in his right elbow. Duchscherer may be ready for Opening Day
The SF Chronicle reports that Justin Duchscherer has continued his long toss program and could see action on a mound as soon as next week. Pitching coach, Curt Young, thinks that there is a slight chance that Duchscherer will be ready for Opening Day.
Our View: Chances are his elbow recovery won't go that smoothly and he won't make the opening day start, but we could still see him early in the season. Draft with caution, as Duchscherer is obviously a big injury risk, but he is capable of paying big dividends when healthy.

His response? "No chance. I wouldn't do it." He is currently battling a sore elbow, but hopes to be able to start on opening day.
Our View: In 426.2 innings over the course of his major league career, Duchscherer has a 3.14 ERA. From 2004 through 2006 he excelled as a reliever in Oakland, but then injuries became more of a factor. Last season he threw a career-high 141.2 innings while making 22 starts.

Jerry Crasnick, of ESPN.com, reports Oakland Athletics SP Justin Duchscherer (elbow) is unlikely to be ready to pitch by Opening Day. He is planning on shutting himself down for the next few days in hopes that rest and medication will alleviate the pain in his elbow. Duchscherer has been given new anti-inflammatory medication and will not pick up a ball this weekend. The plan is for him to play long toss from 100 to 120 feet Monday, March 9. The worst case scenario for Duchscherer would be arthroscopic surgery which would force him to miss six weeks, but several other options will be considered before surgery.

Updating an earlier report, Justin Duchscherer is doubtful
Updating an earlier report, Justin Duchscherer is doubtful to take the hill on opening day due to his ailing elbow, according to ESPN. He will be shut down for the next few days, and is hoping rest and medication will help with the pain.
Our View: He will rest his elbow until Monday, then he intends to play long-toss from a distance of 100-120 feet. There is no major damage and Tommy John surgery is not necessary, but he may need arthroscopic surgery and a cleanup that would force him to miss around six weeks. The procedure would be a worst-case scenario. Edgar Gonzalez or Jerome Williams could replace Duchscherer in the rotation if he is not ready for the start of the season.

A's manager Bob Geren on Tuesday continued to downplay the elbow pain that has prevented All-Star right-hander Justin Duchscherer from appearing in any Spring Training games, but it now appears unlikely that Oakland's ace will be ready by Opening Day. eren called the decision to have Duchscherer examined by Dr. Doug Freedberg "precautionary," and despite Duchscherer's injury history, the third-year skipper dodged a question about his level of concern. "I'll let you know after I hear what the doctor says," Geren said. "He hasn't been shut down."

General manager Billy Beane doesn't plan to be active in the free agent market. "We're going to look at young players to fill spots, first and foremost," Beane said, with an eye towards top prospects Brett Wallace and Chris Carter. "If those players we'd like to acquire aren't obtainable, we'll consider bringing in guys who can hold the positions down. We're going to stay disciplined and try to do everything we can to fill those spots with young players." Beane would consider re-signing Justin Duchscherer or Adam Kennedy, but will let them entertain offers on the open market first. Such a strategy would effectively squash the chances of a Miguel Tejada or Carlos Delgado landing in Oakland.
