News: New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes has a new tear in the injured right hamstring that sidelined him for most of this season. Reyes has been on the disabled list since May with a hamstring tendon problem. Mets manager Jerry Manuel said before New York's 7-4 loss at the Washington Nationals on Wednesday that doctors were trying to make a determination as to whether Reyes needs surgery. Reyes, who has not played since May 20 and was diagnosed with a complete tear of his right hamstring last month, told the Daily News that he will continue taking batting practice for the remainder of the week, and will have a key running session on the field Sept. 25. Should the running session go well, Reyes told the paper he will attempt to return for one or two of the final games of the year. In other words, even if the speedy shortstop manages to return, his productivity will be limited. Reyes could be headed for surgery in the offseason.

Our View: Reyes has made no secret about the fact that he wants to return this season, and he has said that even if he can only make it back for the final game of the season, he will do so. We admire his desire, but his team is going nowhere and he has already cost fantasy owners plenty of heartache this season.

Jose Reyes (hamstring) is walking freely without crutches. "He’s not 100%, obviously, at this point, but he looks great," said his agent Chris Leible. Reyes underwent surgery to repair a torn right hamstring tendon in October. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, the 26-year-old shortstop is expected to be fully recovered in time for the start of the spring training.
